there are reports from Wittmann's colleagues where he ran over enemy soldiers in the process of surrendering!!! and, Bobby Woll also commented on his absolute steadfastness to kill the enemy at all costs before he died. not saying that putting out fire on a human being is not a act of compassion more than a good deed but, remember, hero to germany or not he was a fanatical nazi who obeyed orders to and beyond the limit in murdering those not in line with nazi doctrine.

The scenario was Wittmann had shot at the T-34 and set it ablaze. The Russian crew escaped the tank but were on fire. Wittman's crew were not in any enemy danger at the time and were in control of the battle. The logic behind assisting the Russians was that even though they were enemy combatants they were still armored crew men and Wittmann did not want to watch them burn to death. I don't think shooting their tank with his 88MM and causing them to be on fire was aiding them.Just an example of showing some form of humanity.Yes they did machine gun others, but a lone good deed stands as still being a good deed !!!
