Wittman Tiger With Knights Cross and Add On Crew (2 Viewers)

there are reports from Wittmann's colleagues where he ran over enemy soldiers in the process of surrendering!!! and, Bobby Woll also commented on his absolute steadfastness to kill the enemy at all costs before he died. not saying that putting out fire on a human being is not a act of compassion more than a good deed but, remember, hero to germany or not he was a fanatical nazi who obeyed orders to and beyond the limit in murdering those not in line with nazi doctrine.
Mitch

The scenario was Wittmann had shot at the T-34 and set it ablaze. The Russian crew escaped the tank but were on fire. Wittman's crew were not in any enemy danger at the time and were in control of the battle. The logic behind assisting the Russians was that even though they were enemy combatants they were still armored crew men and Wittmann did not want to watch them burn to death. I don't think shooting their tank with his 88MM and causing them to be on fire was aiding them.Just an example of showing some form of humanity.Yes they did machine gun others, but a lone good deed stands as still being a good deed !!!

At this point I would tend to say it would be easier to lay claim to his status as a "Panzer Ace" versus a humanitarian on the battlefield. Getting back to focus on the main topic of this thread........Great Job on this Wittmann Tank Collectors Showcase !!!!

Yes, indeed, great Job!!!!!

Mitch

What are you saying matey Australian isn't English......................:rolleyes:

I think its not gunpowder your sniffing!!!!! 20 smouldering vehicles indeed!!!

Mitch,
You need to read up on it. Wittmann destroyed the majority during one skirmish in Normandy while attacking a Brit armored column. That's where he received the Knights cross w/Olc & diamonds.

The comment of twenty burning vehicles was aimed at a poor attempt at humour about brit dead. not how many or whatever Wittmann destroyed on the villers bocage action. If you think he recieved all the decorations you say for this action then, you may wish to take your own advice and read up on this little nazi. They were not awarded at the same time nor, for a single action. can you also tell me when he was awarded the diamonds???

The medal was about all that was left after the firefly's had turned him into into fertiliser for the farmers field!!!!Lol

Seems like this too would also be a "Poor" attempt at humor......Wouldn't it ?

Thing is having read the reports and the autopsy reports after the grave exhumations there was very little left of the crew at all. Dog tags from one crew member and a couple of wound badges very tarnished and parts of a Iron cross. Wittmann was identified by his dental records and DNA So, its rather true.

Can you tell me when he was awarded the diamonds??

Interesting thread about Wittmann. I have the 007 Tiger and additional crew figures myself and like them very much. However, I have a question for you all that I hope someone can answer. I have a dio planned featuring MW being photographed sat on top of his tank, using the SS press figures from K+C taking the now famous propaganda shot, but I don't want to use the 007 tank. I want to use the Tiger 1 numbered 222, another CS model and according to some writers the number of the tank he commanded at VB, but the two Tigers are quite different in size and I was wondering why

Does anyone else have these two models, and has anyone else noticed the difference in scale? More importantly, can anyone explain why they should be so different?

BTW, since someone mentioned rivet counting earlier, I think you'll find Wittmann was never awarded the diamonds to his Ritterkreuz. He won the swords for his action at VB and was presented with them by Hitler on 25th June '44 at the Berghof, and then he went and died on 8th August! :wink2: Ta da!!!!

Thanks everyone, in anticipation of some help! :smile2:

I have both of these CS Tigers. Turret 222, the earlier CS model, is a 1/30 scale model and was produced to be 1/30. This is kind of the current standard scale for CS, KC, and a couple other makers. However, the figures made by these manufactures (specifically CS, KC, and TGM), are a bit larger than 1/30 scale, closer to 1/28. This has been the figure size for some time even though the vehicles are 1/30. The new CS Tiger #007, is CS making a Tiger the correct scale to fit the figures, it is therefore a little larger than their older 1/30 Tiger and a bit larger than other makers 1/30 Tigers. The new CS Tiger is the first vehicle correctly scaled to all the current 1/28 figures that are on the market. This is my understanding and belief, anyway. The new CS Tiger, large though it is, looks fantastic with all the figures made by CS, KC, TGM, etc. The proportions now fit. Regardless of whether the figures were too large or the vehicles too small, CS is addressing the problem. -- Al

What multiple awards? Where did I mention that. I have read about it. The main thread of my comment was to nicely admonish about speaking I'll of the dead. It is irrelevant the political background of the person. If I may ask...have you seen combat?

You are correct he received the Das Ritterkreuz des Eisernes Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub und Schwerter ohne diamanten for actions in Villers-Bocage.

I am sorry but, I did not say he won any medals for the action at VB. I know what he was awarded for his actions at VB He already had the knights cross and never got the diamonds awarded. This you stated in your post as did PA44. so, please go and read what you said. You kindly ask me to read up on something which, clearly both you and PA44 seem to be confused about in terms of facts and awards. I have also seen many docs and spoken to vets who were all very happy that another german tanker was put out of action as they would probably live another day so, in that respect I am glad he was put to the sword. That is not speaking ill of the dead its a plain old fact.

Ok...Wittmann single handedly destroyed 20 to 25 vehicles at Villers Bocage,His Knights Cross did not
have diamonds, and he lived by the sword and died by the sword.Now back to the Collectors Showcase Wittmann Tiger.....ah yes Great Tank !{
