Yes I thought Aus were heading home here, but that Kiwi bowler came up with the goods, great test match contested very well by both sides, when two teams are playing like this this game puts football in the shade. (Puts on tin helmet and hides under stairs{sm2})

Wow, I thought football fans would have been calling for my execution by now!^&grin

We live in disturbing times when Australian cricket fans talk about building a team good enough to take on England. I'm not sure that I want to live in a world like that!

I watched a lot of heartbreaking cricket in the 1980s, and came to believe that the success of the 1990s and 2000s would, like any half decent empire, last a thousand years.

'Look on my works ye mighty and despair' - ten points for anyone who identifies the pretensious literary reference!

Just a general comment about the fact that no matter how great you are the good life cannot go on for ever. Had Australian cricket planned a bit better our fall would not have been as far and lasted as long. We had the example of the West Indies in front of us - greatness that went on so long some people felt that it would last forever. Its the same reason empires collapse.

I shall give more thought to my posts in future - I would hate to be one of those weird guys no one gets!

With you now probably just me,the mighty can rise again tho.

Agreed - I can remember a Test match in the 1980s when of the Australian XI, seven were from WA. We Queenslanders and Western Australians need to stick together on cricket matters - cannot have the whole team come from NSW!

Jack,
Maybe one day we will get the two Wayne's in the same room at the same time and have a photo as evidence. Scary thought I know{sm4}.

I've been on holidays over the last few weeks. I was down in Melbourne for the 1st Test and went on the last day - not exciting as I had hoped but an enjoyable enough day. I then pretty much watched most of the Sydney game on TV and saw virtually all of Clark's monumental innings. It was fabulous entertainment. I'm really enjoying watching our new crop of fast bowlers too. The point I thought I'd add to the thread concerns cricket themed adds and how, well they seem to be the kiss of death for any player featured. The main one I have in mind is the KFC one where Shane Watson screws a bat handel into an empty Coke bottle to use as a bat against Brett Lee. Haddin is keeper. Well Haddin would be gone if either of his main understudies was fit. He's dropped some basic catches and has batted poorly. Lee, while still playing the Twenty20 and maybe the 50 over games later on, is yesterday's man and Watson hasn't played all summer. Each year it seems that whoever is identified by the marketeers as the designated 'star' is bound to be a flop.

You need to read before you post.
Wayne - sorry mate I hang my head in shame, as a novice i have much to learn. The Indians have again shown that out side of India and without the advantage of flat and dusty wickets they are not the gods of cricket that the Indian cricket board thinks they are. They are a team of champions not a champion team. May be the DRS may suddenly become a Indian invention!.

No Worries Wayne"O" they play so much cricket on the sub continent as when they do travel they struggle and as you said a team of champions not a champion team.
Bring on the ashes........................^&grin

Australian marketing isn't the only kiss of death. Remember Phil Defreitas in 1985/86 - the first in a long line designated as the 'new Botham'. God help the next young legspinner who plays for Australia - assuming we get one - the first time he is compared to Warne. As for Brad Haddin - he is well advanced along the four step program for a keeper/batsman:

Who is Brad Haddin?
Get me Brad Haddin
Get me a young Brad Haddin
Who is Brad Haddin?

I'll try one more quote (adapted from Abraham Lincoln who got it from ther Bible) and if no one gets it, I am going to give it away.

A Wayne divided against itself cannot stand.
