"If memory serves Viv Richards,Ian Botham and Joel Garner all played for Somerset at the same time at one point, that made for a very strong side indeed."

They did indeed, though I don't know whether it lead to many titles. It ended fairly badly as well. The line ''Been taken down an alley and assasinated," rings a bell. I think the late Peter Roebuck was captain at the time?

Roebuck took over the team in 1986 from memory whereupon Botham went to Worcester to play alongside Graham Hick while Richards played for a Lancashire League (or equivalent) team.

Middlesex would have been an interesting team at the time - Phil Edmonds, John Emburey and Wayne Daniel. Edmonds was always a bit odd, but I think his wife was a 'looker'.

On his day Wayne Daniel was superb.Wonderful fast bowler

He was unlucky to play when he did because I know he was much feared on the county circuit.

You are spot on there Jack, I remember when Yorkshire visited Lords one year when WD was really firing on all cylinders , one of their most famous batsmen appeared to be dropping down the batting order for some unknown reason:wink2:

Anyone catch the score from the England/Pakistan Test?{sm4}

I'm not sure if I see that happening - its a better game when England are good. Does anyone remember when Zimbabwe had a great batting line up? The Flower brothers, Murray Goodwin et all. What a gallant team they were!

Big crowd at the Cricket Rob,looks like a exciting finish coming up (Go Pakistan {sm5})
KP struggling against Left hand spin...................:wink2:

A great escape against the Windies by the Aussies but a win is a win,they never gave up.
But then there,s the English cricket team in a bit of a spin at the moment,i think we are going to bring 5 spinners to the ashes next year........................^&grin^&grin

Country Rank Ratings
England 1 116
SA 2 116
India 3 111
Australia 4 111

Lookout England the reign is coming to a end............{eek3}

Good to celebrate a strong win, but equally pleasing to see the opposition described as the 'never say die Windies'. Its been a while since they had a team you could respect, although without Chanderpaul the batting is still unreliable.

So true mate they where a feared team for soooooooooo long what a pace attack and batting line up they had.
There saying half the problem is the young kids are more interested in basketball (One of the most boring sports on the planet ^&grin)
its the lure of big money not the love of the game.

Very quite Rob...........................

Wayne mate you have more cheek than an Elephants backside!:wink2:^&grin We did not hear a peep out of you at the end of the biggest sporting competition in the world! And now you are ragging me about the Cricket!^&grin:wink2: No. fair play to SA they are a very good team and very much deserved their win{bravo}}. Congrats to them and Damian{bravo}}

Now here is the BIG table Wayne:wink2:

Now I know just what you are going to say, so scroll down. Even if you don't want to count the Golds from people not born in Britain we STILL won 24 Gold medals! One county, Yorkshire in northern England got seven Golds alone, and had it been a separate country would have finished 12th overall! {eek3}Check it out mate;

Having met - and liked Yorkshiremen - I would offer the view that to all intents and purposes Yorkshire is a different country!

Mate i don't like the Olympics that much since it went professional.
It seems to me its more about sponsorship and who can do the best opening and closing ceremony,that's not sport.
How come the Para-Olympics takes a back seat not the same amount of coverage etc,to me they are true champions that's the Olympic spirit not a basketball team that's worth more than a small country,to many ego,s at the Olympics.

So as the Thread says how is your cricket team traveling i see it falling apart at the seams mate,Peterson (speaking of ego,s)is and always has been a sook mate why do you think SA got rid of him,and don't say he left on his own accord.
Looking forward to our summer against SA,beat them and where #1 again,just in time for our ashes whitewash of a old and dysfunctional English cricket team.

My mistake Wayne, I thought it was you who was loving it when one of your girls won one of your seven golds in the cycling. Loved the opening ceremony but thought closing ceremony not nearly as good. But it's about the sport for us, rowing , cycling, athletics, boxing, tennis, we just rocked this time and the lottery investment really paid off, had to be one of the best Olympics ever.

As for Paralympics I can't speak for previous games but over here it's going down a storm, it already looks set to be first ever Paralympics to sell out and is getting wall to wall advertising. As the BBC got the Olympics the Paralympics coverage goes to another big station C4. Should be really good.

Yep we got some rebuilding to do in the Cricket team, but you can bet on one thing mate, we'll be fired up for it, always are.

Cheers

Rob

I got the impression that England were just a bit off the boil - perhaps with an eye on the Ashes - rather than in need of a rebuild. Regardless - and it saddens me to say this - I don't think the Australian Cricket Board need to start clearing a space in the cabinet for extra silverware any time soon.

If God played cricket, he would have Ian Bell's technique!

No mistake mate that race was called the "Ashes" of the olympics a great rivalry hence my interest.
Its should go back to the old days of no professional athletes should compete,IMO it was more enjoyable,to commercial now mate but like i said just MO.
As for Jack i think he will be pleasantly surprised and the old urn is coming home.........................^&grin
But SA first unlike England we won't go thinking to far ahead.
