Ooops apologies for that, yep Rugby is a great game too.^&cool

Rob,
On the improvement of Australian bowling , I think it's down to Graig McDermit as our new bowling coach, a new broom so to speak. One of our past best ( A Queenslander, wink, wink )

A stunning day! I suspect India are making us look better than we are but it's been very impressive. I worry our batting performances seem to be based on a few exceptional personal contributions. Clark has been superb. There were plenty of doubters/critics (often with a dose of plain jealousy) thrown in but I think he's shut a lot of them up with his incredible batting since becoming captain!

For all the often justified criticism of the Australia team, there is little evidence that there are young players knocking the door down by virtue of scoring runs week in week out. Hussey and Ponting might well be too old to tour again, but only if there were two Matt Haydens or Darren Lehmanns doing the job in first class ranks, but there is a real dearth of these types. Someone like Callum Ferguson is regularly talked about, but after eight seasons batting in Adelaide his average is 35.

Rob,
Don't let Wayne (the original one {sm4}) fool you. That other game is very hard to get used to. Very much an aquired taste. Most of the teams that play it are from Melbourne. The nearest other game to it is Gaelic football so not much of a world folowing. However the spectators for each game are much higher on average than Rugby, League and Soccer. Soccer attendance very low.
Regards
Brett

Brett's right Rob, A.F.L is almost a religion in Melbourne and our southern states, nothing like a full M.C.G on Grand Final day. They took a dim view of Brisbane winning the Grand Final three times in a row a few years back, and yes before I get reminded most of the team and coach were southerns.^&grin^&grin^&grin

Just sat down to enjoy the Test only to find we have flogged them again, sometimes the Aussies are too good, with nothing now to watch and rain will have to stay on the PC.
Poo.{sm2}{bravo}}

Well we got mullered by Pakistan so we have a year to up our game again before you guys arrive to wrench the Ashes back again, either that or we pray for an English summer...RAIN!:D:wink2:

Be sure Rob that our bowlers won't have any bottle tops in their pockets{sm4} Looking forward to it, may the best team win:wink2::wink2::wink2:

Rob

In one of your earlier posts you talked about the Windies tours of England that you had seen - did you mean the monsterings in 1984 or the really dry summer of 1976 when Richards got his 291 and Tony Grieg made the unfortunate 'grovel' remark?

Jack, it was the 1976 tour (very long hot summer that year). Yes that must go down in history (sporting at least) as one of the worst remarks someone could have made!. I then had the pleasure of seeing many West Indian players play in club Cricket when they visited my team Middlesex at Lords. If memory serves Viv Richards,Ian Botham and Joel Garner all played for Somerset at the same time at one point, that made for a very strong side indeed.

Those were the days, proper summer weather and full to capacity for club games, the newer versions of the game have all but destroyed club Cricket attendances over here, whenever you see a four day game on the news now there are huge areas of empty seats, very sad.

At least the Ashes series is always packed out^&cool

I was never a fan of Viv's but I had a poster of him cover driving during that tour on my wall. The outfield was almost brown. I was a fan of Brian Close and I remember reading about ninety minutes of play he and Edrich endured one evening when Holding and co were lethal. He was one tough man! He seemed to epitimose what a Yorkshireman should be, although by that time he was captaining Somerset.

They did indeed, though I don't know whether it lead to many titles. It ended fairly badly as well. The line ''Been taken down an alley and assasinated," rings a bell. I think the late Peter Roebuck was captain at the time?

Larso,
Don't know much about county cricket back then or now, but did enjoy Peter Roebuck on the ABC, shame about what happened there.:(
