Why has no one resurrected Trophy of Wales? (1 Viewer)

Hello.
Forgive me for being a neophyte on this subject but that is the reason for asking questions. Anyway, I have often wondered why no enterprising entrepreneur or business has not resurrected Trophy of Wales? As seen on the Forum, the company was and has been quite popular, so there is an interest in purchasing more of the company's work. Moreover, W. Britains was bought by another company. Why not Trophy of Wales?

Thanks,
MikeNick

I think this is an old question and those who know better than me can give a better answer. However, I think Ken Jackson has the rights now. Unfortunately, I don't know the reason why new Trophy hasn't shown up. Perhaps the molds wore out.

Seems a simple enough question doesn't it? Probably best for some Trophy collectors to give you their answers. I don't collect thgem myself - as I like painting my own - but I DO like how Len sculpted and painted them. I try very consciously to paint up my castings - in a complimentary way to many of the better Glossy makers - which, of course would include Trophy.

I suspect that some people collect Trophy - just because they aren't being made any more. There's a bit of the thrill of the chase - in hunting down rare specimens - and trying to get that definitive collection - with at least one of everything that len made. If someone were to resurect the old moulds and start producing the old figures again - I also suspect there would be howls of protest from some quarters - as they see their old (and sometimes rare - and therefore valuable items), possibly going down in value before their eyes.{eek3}

Others buy them - just 'cos they like them - and there's nothing wrong with that - but as there is a finite number available - the old rule of supply and demand comes into play - and they can only go up in value as less become available.

It's a bit like owning a Picasso painting - if someone makes a darned good copy - will it affect the value of an original???? I don't think so - but that's just my guess.^&cool

On a personal level - I would love to get my hands on some new Castings of some of Len's beautiful figures - and try my hand at painting them - but - as with many other superb figures from old producers - I'm guessing that may be far from likely - well - at the moment.

Lastly of course, there are the thoughts and wishes of the original producer to take into account. Len made them - and the moulds are his for as long as he may wish to keep hold of them. If he chooses to sell them on - and someone else wants to take on production - that again, is his - and their business.

Never say Never though, eh? - I should live so long!

Just delight in what you can see, for the moment, from those kind owners who take the trouble to show us some of Len's little masterpieces, from time to time, (which many of us thoroughly appreciate) and cross your fingers and hope...............You never know..................:D Johnnybach

I wish I could say more, but what I can say is that when Len retired he sold the company to Ken Jackson of Maison Militaire.
Ken took on all of the moulds and masters in order to keep them together. If you want anything just ask him.

I guess we have beaten a dead horse long enough ^&grin
Said and tried almost everything...a sad situation but not much we can do about it.

Thanks for the links back to previous threads about the selling of the Trophy moulds Martyn. I'm sure that will help explain things to those of us who joined the forum after the thread had run its course - it was news to me.

Sad though, that they are still not being produced - but with lots of other casting providers around - there are still lots of similar products to choose from. And with nice-guys like you who show us what Trophy looked like on a regular basis - we can always strive to produce our own versions from those.

Sorry but even though products like Little Legion are great, it's not the same as the real thing :(

Brad

Agreed Brad - but when there appears to be little chance of that happening - the pragmatic approach is to just do the best you can - with what you CAN get hold of.:) jb

i agree brad, little legion has some great pieces that tell a story to augment my waterloo diorama. But the heads are a little different which is ok but hte guns just have too much silver on the top which takes away from their great figures. There is just something about the trophy figures that i fell in love with when i first saw them in chicago in 1995.

If i ever hit the lotto buying the trophy molds would be topps on my list

BUT NOW I HAVE TO LAUGH , I HAVE ASCENDED INTO THE GROUP THAT IS TRYING TO GET ONE OF EVRYTHING HE MADE BUT FOR ME IT IS FROM 1995 UP. AND YES I LOVE THE THRILL OF THE CHASE. MY HOLY GRAIL WA71 RED LANCER OF HAMBURG TRUMPET MAJOR. YELLOW TUNIC, RED PANTS FALLING OFF A WHITE HORSE. LET ME KNOW IF ANYBODY OUT THERE CAN HELP A FELLOW OUT

When I was bidding to buy SARUM SOLDIERS (Chota Sahib and Studio Figurine) back in 2008/9 I placed a Bid for Trophy Miniatures of Wles, for whom I was a Painter.

However, due to Legal complications over family business (The Family we call it the Family) elsewhere, i was unavailable the hour for the auction, i got there too late, I was out bid by someone else. I understand that the range got shipped out the UK through Belgium.

I have seen certain former TROPHY items on sale I think by Swedish "Dealer" Magnus Londstrom, now trading under the name "Tradition of London" that were clearly once Trophy Sets (Crimean Russian Artillery etc).
I had the entire Auction Catalogue and definately remember them, as I was very keen on the Crimean campaign at the time.

Though I have not ever seen again TROPHY being sold as a Brand in a total or full range by anyone else in the Business.

It might just be the sets or toolings did not all get "sold" after all but I think the original Welsh owners are now gone, so may be a hard one to track down for sure by now.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?

The challenge is that TROPHY, like our Chota Sahib and surviving stuff from ROSEDALE etc, is now very "old" in its style and appeal, and subject matter, and much in the Business and Hobby might have "moved on" in interest of subjects.

Making any re aquisition or re launch (if even possible) a up hill battle for any new owners.
However given the load of crap we got sold from N Z recently, IF I could Gurantee its completeness, I would seriously at elast "consider" such a proposition. (they can make up for all the holes we got sold where the products were meant to be from N Z !!) Ahem...

In fact, in the final striking OFF of the Limited Company TROPHY MINIATURES, the final GAZETTE states that all company property will be Legaly held as "Bona Vacantia" which to the uninitiated, means Property now of the United Kingdom Government.
It is rather odd, because after re starting apparently in around 2012 the Company initialy lost out very badly to a rise in Internet Rival traders, but rallied very successfully back again for a time.
Len clearly decided for whatever reason to strike the Company OFF the reigster, and this was legaly done.

No Doubt therefore, there must have been Debts or Issues around Money or something like that, because the UK Government "Bona Vacantia" will by now have decided the fate of the toolings and goods remaining of TROPHY Miniatures.

Sorry evrybody seems like TROPHY are defioantely gone for good.

Lens final Accounts state his Business was worth the value of around 36 926 STERLING. Of which all the total 36 926 were "shareholders funds"......

This strongly implies a form of Bankruptcy or financial setback took place, as the toal of all company funds are shareholders Money, and this is marked up as including all total assetts too (tooling figures stock etc).

This is or was, nearly the exact same sum my wife and I paid for buying the former Abraham Simon FLEURBAIX TOY Soldier Business in 2023. So this sum of Len's would after all be "about right" for a Business like that.

Its really just too bad TROPHY are gone.

Bona Vacantia’ means vacant goods and is the name given to ownerless property, which by law passes to the Crown.

The UK Government Treasury Solicitor acts for the Crown to administer the estates of people who die intestate (without a Will) and without known kin (entitled blood relatives) and collect the assets of dissolved companies and other various ownerless goods in England and Wales.
This means Len died suddennley and Intestate (NO Successor or named given legal Will or Testament).

Which means the entire business by now has been broken up and sold off.

I know a heck of a lot about this, as for several years as part of my Professional activities and Family documentation, I was in constant contact with them. (But try explaining any of that to Patrick J D Willlis!!!) Sorry, but sour grapes there....

But then, there are so many Pirate and Illegal copie operators out there today in our "Industry Business" that I am SURE somebody will tell a sweet lie and suddennley TROPHY will magicaly ressurrect itself again....someone out there will claim they have "acquired the rights" like they tried to do to us with Chota Sahib Ahemmmm

Im sure it will surface again from father Wrong from Hong Kong or some such like, doubtless using an ENglish "FRONT Company name" like some do...
