Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are reuniting for their third HBO World War II miniseries. The miniseries is based on Donald L. Miller's book about the Eighth Air Force titled MASTERS OF THE AIR: AMERICA'S BOMBER BOYS WHO FOUGHT THE AIR WAR AGAINST NAZI GERMANY. The miniseries will also use other source material in addition to Miller's book.
No premiere date was given.
Graham Yost (JUSTIFIED), who worked on BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC, is reportedly returning for MASTERS OF THE AIR.

This sounds very good, although I enjoyed Pacific it wasnt nearly as good as Band of Brothers but this could be another terrific series. These guys contributed so much to victory with their bombing campaign that they deserve all the recognition they get .

I agree with you Rob BOB was better but I do think these show do give the impression that the United State won there war on there own I'm sorry to say

I wonder if it will concentrate on the bombers or whether it will cover the story of the escort fighters. For Commonwealth airmen in fighters you have the BoB, Malta or the sweeps over France. What is the equivalent for US Fighter pilots if there story is not told with the bombers? Not really my area - anyone with some thoughts?

Agree ! Think it will be about 8th Air Force bomber group

Does anyone think it will be anything but about the U.S.A.A.F? I don't think so.
Wayne.

If it does I hope it show the RAF escorting there bombers at start of there day light bombing campaign but doubt it

Well they are American shows made with American dollars for an American audience. There are few countries that could manage the expense of doing WW2 properly. The British used to make wonderful films telling their war stories. I wonder when the last good British made war film was?

Film going to be based on this book Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany

I'm sure it will be another blockbuster, fantastic series! Speilberg's and Hanks filming of WWII is phenomenal; I consider Saving Private Rayan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific amomg the best movies ever made on the subject. Regardless of the comprehensiveness (if only USAAF or RAF too) it will certainly be a great addition to WWII filmography! Let's hope they start shooting soon...

Guys I for one would love to see either a film or a series made about the Battle for Malta. Can't blame American companies for aiming at American audiences so I'd like to see the BBC/HBO do a joint project on this pivotal battle. With control of the meds shipping lanes this tiny Island took on importance far far above its size. It was a horrific battle with the civilians suffering a prolonged aerial bombing campaign longer in consecutive nights than the London Blitz. As well as the heroic story of the hugely outnumbered RAF pilots facing large bomber raids you also have the knife edge battle to get the convoys through to the beleaguered Island that was very close indeed.

In the meantime the USAAF Bomber raids series will make for some great tv!

I will await and see what its like. I heard so many things about the pacific and, I thought that was pants overall. Not sure they are aiming it solely at the US market as I saw sales for BOB was bigger outside of the US and sales for pacific were not as good as were expected.

The best WW1 series I have seen was "ANZAC" around about the 60's with Paul Hogan and some other Aust actors.....sorry I cannot remember their names.....well made then for a aussie production....did not have all the wiz bangs and thingo's of saving Pte Ryan...which was a good movie I thought...but it was well done and has been totally ignored by Aust TV for yrs now....about time it was re-run...thankfully I have it on Tape...will transfer to DVD one day.......TomB

GUYS:

In case you aren't aware of it, there some other war movies underway.

1. BATTLE OF BRITAIN---being written by Oscar-winner Robert Towne (CHINATOWN). This is not a remake of the movie that starred Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer and Robert Shaw.
2. GALLOPOLI---Peter Jackson is the producer.
3. THE DAMBUSTERS---remake of the original with Peter Jackson as producer.
4. 34TH BATTALION---about a unit of Australian soldiers in World War I starring Luke Hemsworth, Stephen Lang (AVATAR) and Emilie de Raven (LOST).

There was also a movie about the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, but the writer, Oscar-winner Frank Pierson (COOL HAND LUKE), died a few months ago. I haven't heard anything about it since.

Also, a big-budget epic about the Battle of Midway was being written by Bruce McKenna (BAND OF BROTHERS), but apparently that has been shelved. Also, another D-Day movie directed by Dale Dye (technical adviser on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, BAND OF BROTHERS, etc.) about the 82nd Airborne paratroopers defending the key bridge portrayed in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN has been underway for years and is in limbo.

This will be an interesting series. I wonder if they will pick a single squadron/aircrew to follow, similar to BoB, or if they will take a wider point of view and bounce from unit to unit and tell a overall story. -- Al

Sound like it going to be a bit like the ITV. Program Were meet again ^&grin

Anzac's was made in the 80s and I LOVED it! It hasn't aged so well though, I tried watching it again a few years ago and it was very clunky.

I'm intrigued about a Battle Of Britain show. There's so much to cover, it would make a great 6 part series. The pilots of course, families being blitzed, firefighters and Home Guard types etc
