Hi Guys,

Thought you might like to see another new “warbird” that just flew (sailed) into Hong Kong waters… The massive and mighty Short Sunderland Flying Boat.

These WW2 aerial reconnaissance planes helped win the war in the Atlantic and sank many a German U boat. They also rescued other downed fliers and torpedoed Merchant Navy Seafarers. This particular “Sunderland” is flying onto one of our collectors in France who already has 4 x different Lancasters!!!

Best wishes and happy flying!

Andy C.

P.S. A few other details… The model’s wingspan measures 104CM…Length 83CM…All gun turrets rotate…and…YES it can float! Would look great in your bath or swimming pool.

Is it just me or is this plane lacking detail. I do like K&C but it seems to stream line with just paint detail . Chris.

congratulations Andy (and lucky French collector!!), it's a real beauty!

I think an "Olympic" size swimming pool would be the order for this bird Andy! Awesome plane mate, thanks for posting.

I 'm not an expert on the Sunderland but in my youth I built the Airfix kit in 1/72. I don't remember there being a lot of "detail" on the Sunderland, at least compared with the B17s I was building at the same time.

That is one impressive aircraft. Spitfires are sexy, but planes like the Sunderland help curb the U-Boat menace. If I remember right, after the German battleship Bismarck was found by a Catalina, a Sunderland was one of the relief aircraft that kept tabs on her until the Home Fleet could close and destroy her. Plus, if memory serves correctly the RAF used some Sunderlands to haul a limited amount of tonnage into Berlin during the 1949 airlift. They were landed on a lake due to the congestion at Tempelhoff Airport.

Great stuff Gary ,my teacher at primary school was a pilot on short Sunderland with costal command and seen video footage of Sunderland landing in the lakes in Berlin as well

Can't afford one, but what a magnificent model!^&cool^&cool I took some photos of the real thing recently at Duxford, and K&C absolutely nailed it:

A beautiful aircraft and a beautiful model.

I remember sitting in a hotel near the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and having afternoon tea (I was staying in the cheaper hotel across the road!) and seeing a painted map of the world on a wall marking the flying boat route from the UK. It was a touch of old world charm that I very much enjoyed.

I later was lucky enough to have a flight on a Grumman flying boat in NZ which was quite an experience. A nice way to travel. Looked hard but did not spot a U-Boat.

You and me both Jack.....I was lucky enough as a kid to experience a short scenic flight in a Grumman flying boat here in Auckland harbour, many moons ago.

I remember it being a heck of a bumpy ride on take-off and extremely noisy.{sm3}
