I am not going to speak to what this thread has become. On this forum we should all feel free to respond and comment as we see fit without fear or reprisal.

However, one thing I know for sure is that every post, no matter how mundane, is an invite to debate. I could post what I had for breakfast along with photographic evidence and someone would comment on it. From the scale of my bacon to the color of my eggs (along with a color chart from a farmer in the Midwest) it would all be dissected. Never mind the nutrition facts which would lead the whole thread to be shut down. You gotta laugh, otherwise this forum will make you cry.

Twenty years ago I had my honeymoon in America. We witnessed everybody pouring maple syrup all over their bacon and eggs and thought the whole idea crazy.

Fast forward 20 years and I like nothing more than bacon, eggs, pancakes covered in maple syrup, just fantastic.

Whenever I see the words "American Breakfast" my eyes light up!

That is the ideal, but not always the reality. This is not a huge hobby, compared to others and if, for instance, you only collect one manufacturer, it's even smaller. Things do happen, as toy king alluded to.

That said, 95% of the goings on are fun, positive and informative, 4% are a bit controversial, 1% is the bit I can do without, but it's the nature of forums in general and society as a whole.

......I'm crying now,{sm5} buckets loads of my hard earned TS fund.......we just discovered our hot water cylinder is leaking and destroyed the timber floor, not to mention the new carpet and the plumber wants to charge us a small fortune in gold bullion{eek3}{eek3}

Would still be nice to know do you prefer 'streaky or shoulder' bacon Jason and are the chickens corn fed?!^&grin

And on the bacon? I prefer an equal amount of meat to the fat, so there is clearly a scale issue. I also feel that the corn fed eggs have a better look to them than standard ones. I was checking the nutrion labels too. I really wish the manufacturers would do more research on this stuff. If I am going to spend my hard earned dollars on my breakfast I expect them to provide information that applies to a standard size meal.

Jason, you'll be pleased to hear that my TS lads managed to sand-bag themselves out of trouble and made it to high ground without any casualties.

I'm with you on the scale issue, fat verses meat and there certainly needs to an equal balance of the two, not to mention the taste and texture factor.:tongue: I also find the number of feathers can not be understated and then there's the weight issue. To light, and the poor hen's simply fall over in the slightest breeze, too heavy and we end up with scrambled eggs everywhere.{eek3}......it's a travesty:wink2:

I am not sure what to do on the bacon scale and corn fed weights. The hen issue is also troubling. I might need to switch to simple cereal and bow out of the whole thing.

I'd love to have a toy soldier shop nearby to see the items before I bought them and to talk toy soldiers. And nothing is tax free in Canada anyway no matter if I order from another Province or from the US. And I can get free shipping only in Canada. So I would consider it an advantage to have a full sized B&M store in Toronto.

Hopefully someone else can remember Labell's Toy Soldier Shop in the arcade area of the Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto. Acquired some vintage W. Britains sets there in the 1960's and 1970's. Would frequently stop there on the trek north to the fishing in Georgian Bay (Sans Souci area).

Yes, I do remember it. I used to work downtown and would often stop in on the way to the subway or GO Train at Union Station. They sold a lot of medals and war memoribilia as well. I haven't thought about them in decades. They can't still be there, can they???

I know this thread originally was about bookstores and toy soldier shows.. but in related news is the closing of another toy shop. I just found out that The Toymaker of Williamsburg (VA.) has closed its doors after 48 years in business. My wife and I went to Colonial Williamsburg in 2009 and one of my stops, of course, was the Toymaker of Williamsburg. Very disappointing news for sure, but not surprising.. On the plus side they are still maintaining a web presence...

It's just the way things are.. To be fair, most, if not all of us have purchased stuff online or at a big box store if it meant saving a few dollars (or other currency) over buying the same items at a mom & pop store (be it hobby, or book).... I know I have, many times..

I will continue going to Toy Soldier shows when I can.. Right now I regularly attend two shows: Chicago and Indianapolis. The Chicago show is easy and cheap for me - I live near there - so no extra travel expense.. The Indy show costs me a couple hundred that I could use for toy soldiers - but I wouldn't want to miss it! I'm already looking forward to the show on April 13 (will be there April 11 for room trading). I've also been twice to the Plastic Warrior Show in London, UK. and hope to get there again in a year or two...

Cursory research indicates that Labell's was still doing business in the Royal York Hotel as of 1987. They are no longer in business.
