2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

He needs a few weeks rest. Walker is also gone as is Cabrera. Mets weren't ready for prime time. If they lose tonight they're in trouble. Heck, they were in trouble before this series started. In all likelihood not their year.

I noticed the Yankees have now dropped 3 in a row.
I hope rest will do it for Harvey. I was reading an article yesterday that said it was possible that Harvey had come back too soon from his thoracic surgery thing, so maybe rest will work. I can't remember a team being as badly bitten by the injury bug as the Mets have been these last 2 seasons. -- Al

I'll join the misery. The Giants gave up 9 runs to the Rockies in the first 6 innings tonight only to storm back and tie it up with 5 in the 8th and 1 in the top of the 9th. And of course the Rockies loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th and won it 10-9.

:(
A team that makes up a 9 run deficit should have been rewarded with a win. Baseball can be a brutal game. Tough loss. -- Al

Al:

The Giants are so short-handed they used 2 different pitchers as pinch hitters in that game and yet they still made up that deficit. Somehow that makes the lose even more painful.

I looked at the bullpen stats and, yes, the Nats are in the bottom but so are the Twins; the Twins are the worst. The Mets aren't much better but I'd expect that for a losing team. Many have wondered about the Yankees' pitching but their pitching -- starting and relieving -- is among the best. Overall the Nats pitching is 10th, which shows how good the starting pitching has been. The Orioles have the 19th best pen but overall they are 26th, a testament to the quality of the starting pitching.
Not to belabor the Nats bullpen problems, but I will. 66 games into the season and the Nats bullpen ERA stands at 5.20 while the team ERA is 4.20, showing how good the starting pitching has been but highlighting how bad the pen is. This year the pen has given up 5 or more runs in 7 games. They gave up 5 or more runs in 8 games in all of 2016. The pen has cost Nats starters 11 wins, with Gonzalez being the most frequent victim, having left games with leads on 5 occasions only to have the pen blow the lead. The pen is a fatal weakness as things now stand and must be addressed for the Nats to entertain post-season aspirations, otherwise it's going to be another year of lost opportunities for the Nats. -- Al

As bad as it gets: O's just finished a 1-7 road trip where they were outscored 71-29 with 10 of the O's runs coming in the 1 win. O's SP's had an ERA of about 12.5 on the trip. Things look grim, yet there is a ray of sunshine. As bad as the O's have been playing, they are only 1 game under .500, and only 6.5 games out in a division that figures to be a dogfight until the last game. Anything is possible with Buck and the boys. -- Al

It didn't take long for the O's to realize that Edwin Jackson wasn't going to help the pitching as he was DFAed after 3 games with the O's. So who picked him up and signed him to a minor league contract? The Nats.:rolleyes2: You would think they had learned their lesson with Jackson after his lackluster 2012 season with the Nats, but desperation in the bullpen makes for strange bedfellows. Jeesh! -- Al

Al:

I saw the same thing with the Giants last year. Just hope that the Nats get it figured out by the time the playoffs role around. The Giants were still trying to fix their bullpen during the NLDS and that ultimately cost them their post-season.

Adios boys? Come on, George, the Sawks are in 2nd place, only 2 games out, and it's only mid-June. There is all sorts of time for the AL East race to flip-flop about 2 dozen times. I know that the grit of the Sawks fan won't let you ignore the race, as it is ingrained in you all, just like you can't give up on the Celtics, Bruins, or Patriots (even if the Pats actually lose a game here or there), so no adios until the Fat Lady sings, and it is just as likely that the Fat Lady will be singing in Boston as in NY, or even in Baltimore, should a miracle occur. Yaz and Nomar will have it no other way.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Make that one game out as despite Quasimodo hitting another home run last night (he's on pace for 411 this year), their bullpen blew a one run lead in the 8th and they lost 7-6..

That's 4 in a row the MFY's have now lost; if Fatso falls back to earth and Tanaka's arm finally falls off, the Red Sox have a shot.

IMO, they just don't have the offense to get it done, plus their rotation is a mess with Rodriquez on the DL, Johnson who they called up to replace him is hurt, Price is not doing well and Porcello is a tire fire this year. Two of the back end of the bullpen guys they traded for have yet to see the field this year, now word is the lights out 8th inning guy they got from the Brewers is out for the year and needs surgery, he's got a major shoulder issue, might be done for his career, he was damaged goods the whole time (thanks Brewers, nice job pulling off that trade that got you Shaw who's lighting up the National League...............................).

They have very little power in their lineup, plus third base is a hot mess, what a horrible FA signing Panda was, he can't hit and can't field, but other than that, he's worth every penny of the 20 mil a year he's making.

MLB this year is a classic haves and haves nots; of the 30 teams, 20 are at .500 or lower.

Wow.

Barring complete meltdowns, three of the six divisions are already wrapped up and it's not even July yet, as are both wild card spots in the NL, only the NL Central is in play, with the Brewers..................wait, what? The Brewers.....................leading the NL Central and the first time WS champs since Christ was in a crib Cubs are burping and farting along at 33-33; oh well, they're lined up to win another WS in 2125, their fans are content, they'll just keep going to Wrigley, getting hammered, eating boxcars full of food and signing take me out to the ballgame.

And by the way, what happened to the LET'S GO O'S!!...................wow, they fell off a cliff, got hammered again last night by the Cardinals, what's that, 9 of their last 10? That broken toilet of a starting rotation finally crashed and burned, what a waste of offensive talent.

Well, another loss, another injury. Just as Lagares was starting to get hot and establishing himself, bang! he's injured -- fractured thumb.

Too borrow a line from Pedro, the Nats are the Mets' daddy :(

The Dodgers are coming up next in LA and that will probably be bad too.

After that, the Giants. Two also rans that were supposed to be contenders.

Adios 2017. It's been too real and not too much fun.

Maybe we can sign Murphy in 2019 {eek3}

Great analysis, especially of the O's. The AL East will stay in play, but I have serious doubts if the O's can stay around because of "that broken toilet of a starting rotation". It really is a crime that the O's are wasting that offensive ability on such awful pitching. It is discouraging. And what has happened to 'Genius Joe' and the Super Cubs? Genius Joe says they are too young? Whatever. -- Al

Brad, I don't think we want to give Murph back. He really has been something great for the Nats. I am a little surprised that the Nats have won the first 2 games of the series, considering how we were playing coming in. Has to be credited to the outstanding starts by Gonzalez and Mad Max and not allowing our bullpen the chance to throw away the game. I note this because the bullpen has pitched 3 innings in the 2 games and allowed 2 runs. Nats have to limit the bullpen exposure to have a chance to win. Mets need to get to our bullpen earlier in the game and the results will be different. -- Al

Another L coming up. Constantly being behind puts you behind the proverbial 8 ball.

Don't underestimate the Nats bullpens ability to throw the game away. 'Gopher Ball' Blanton (8 Hrs allowed in 15.2 innings) has already done his thing and the 9th inning is still coming up. If the Nats use 'Gopher Ball' Kelley (9 Hrs allowed in 18 innings) in the 9th, Mets will win. -- Al

Wow..the O's win a barn burner 15-7!!! but in reality I was never comfortable they'd hold off the Cards until the final out, hard to believe this is the same team when winning after 7 was a lock down win, but here's the real nut kicker, I haven't looked at standings in awhile but pulled up the Wild Card race as it sits today, the O's are only 2 out!!! got to put some hope into something for this lousy season, even if it's only the middle of June.

Nats bullpen holds on thanks to the Mets tendency to hit into double-plays, 7 over the last 2 games. We'll take it as the bullpen just can't be trusted, having given up 4 runs in 6.2 innings over the 3 games. If our starter doesn't go 7+, we have a problem of gigantic proportions. -- Al

Looks like the pitching is coming around, Miley and the bullpen only allowed 7 earned over 9, way to go fellas....................imagine Miley got the win.

Good Christ.

yup, even a blind squirrel (O's pitching staff) finds a nut once in awhile.

Actually, Miley's 5 ER's allowed in 5.2 innings was the 2nd best starting pitching performance for the O's in the last 10 games, if that tells you how things have been going for the O's.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Indeed. Witness uBADo's excellent outing. That guy can really make you tear your hair out. Once every 5 or 6 starts he pitches light's out, the rest of the time he's just a burned out bulb. Insane. -- Al
