2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

What the Hell??.....14-0 Yanks in the 6th??? been so busy looking at the London show/ Tom's thread I forgot about the game until now {eek3}{eek3}{eek3}...this might be the start of the end for 2017 the way this team has played the last 4-5 weeks, I'm thinking there might be a fire sale in Baltimore after the break if things don't improve...to many high dollar home run swingers not producing, Manny not being Manny, injuries, and pitching?? well I'll just stop here.

As of right now, I completely agree with George's assessment, outside of the Astros, who are far and away the best team in he AL, the class of the AL are all in the East. Today the top four teams are over .500, and the Blue Jays, presently occupying the basement, are only 3 games under .500 after an awful start. As of today, I think the winner of the East will face the Astros in the ALCS.

But again, I don't really like to look at how things are going until July 1st. Then you have a large enough sample size to judge if players and teams are for real.

14-0..I'm thinking the Yanks are for real.

Sammy, it's worse than it looks. Tillman got the first 2 outs in the first, then the roof fell in. NY scored 6 before Tillman got the last out. Then he gave up 3 more in the 2nd and was gone with 1 out in the 2nd. NY hasn't slowed down much since then. Judge is 3 for 3 with a walk, a Hr, and 3 RBI. Tillman's ERA is now 8.01. Things are just getting worse for the pitchers. Very, very ugly. -- Al

Yup, I agree Sammy, the MFY's for real, the 2017 Murders Row...........man can they mash, from Quasimodo to Sanchez to Carter, the washed tomato can they got from the NL, or as I like to call him "The guy the MFYs grab off the scrap heap who goes to NY and reinvents his career at the new Yankee Stadium, also known as Williamsport East every year"..............not to mention "Pine Tar" Pineda and Sherman Klump going back to the future and pitching lights out.

The Red Sox don't have the offense or the starting pitching to overtake them, so time to wave the white flag, the MFY's are about to go on one of those 5 to 7 year win the AL East every year runs, plus their farm system is stacked.

Plus let's be honest Sammy, we both know Machado and Harper will be with the MFY's in 2018.

That's just all kinds of awesome...................................

I think it's early to write off the division because of the Yankees starting pitching. That's still a bit of an unknown, particularly Tanaka who hasn't been very good.

I seriously doubt the Nats will let Harper escape but if they do he's been rumored to be interested in the Cubs. I also don't see Machado playing for them because the Yankees have a prospect who is highly regarded whom they obtained in the Chapman deal, Gleyber Torres.

Thanks for the positive vibes; you know the rest of the AL East is screwed when the MFY's don't run out and throw a dump truck filled with money at a guy because they have some young hotshot in their farm system ready to step right in and hit 70 home runs his rookie year.

They got him in the Chapman deal; so they dealt Chapman away, got a future hall of famer in return, then signed Chapman back when he became a free agent; that's so MFY now isn't it.

The Sox trade Lester away for Cespedes, then instead of resigning Lester in the off season, they lowballed him and he goes to the Cubs and Theo the ballbag and Captain Smarmy Joe Maddon and he wins a WS title, then the geniuses who run the Red Sox trade Cespedes to the Tigers for Porcello, who stinks on ice, so they lost a lock down starter and a stud outfielder and got back a guy who has two pitches, balls and 400 foot home runs.

Wonderful, I feel better already........................................................anymore pieces of good news you want to share with me as I nurse this monster of a hangover from last night? Went to a college graduation party for my best friends twin boys and also their neighbors son from across the street, three wonderful young men who I've watched grow up right before my eyes, all three have great jobs lined up and are ready to take on the world. Time sure does fly, seems like just yesterday I held the twins in my arms the day they came home from the hospital, now they are both 21 years old and taller than me............................time flies in the blink of an eye fellas.........................................

Think Tillman is finished, not going to be back to his pre-August 2016 form.

BTW, I'M visiting friends and went to the Indians-White Sox game, andCleveland lost to the basement team. :rolleyes2: Chris

Some bright light who called into WFAN suggested they trade Chapman again and resign him.

Didn't Porcello win Cy Young last year. Glad they made the Céspedes trade. He came back yesterday and hit a grand slam.

Hey why not, keep trading guys on the last year of their contract, get a great prospect for him, then resign him in the off season, it's such an MFY move.

Yes he did, but it was from the norm for him, he stunk the first year he was here, now he stinks again this year.

Cespedes was a free agent and he told the Red Sox he wanted the national debt of Peru to resign here, so they shipped his rear end out of town, I'll take the kid the Red Sox have patrolling left field right now, he's be a ROY winner if it wasn't for Quasimodo in New York. Did you see the catch he made vs the Red Sox the other night where he slammed into the right field wall, I heard they then put the right field wall on the 10 day DL...............................

Good lord, not again. The NYY's have scored 5 runs in the 1st off the O's Gausman. As much as I've complained about the O's starting pitchers over the years, this year has to be the worst. In the past, it was always 2 or 3 ok pitchers holding up the staff, while the O's tried to fill the 4 and 5 spots. This year it is Bundy and little else. Gausman has been a major disappointment, Jimenez always has been a bust, Miley so-so, and the 5 spot totally lost. Me thinks the O's need more than 1 good starting pitcher.:rolleyes2: -- Al
P.S. - Gausman has now given up 100 hits in 68 innings this season, 13 of them Hrs.

About as bad as it gets. Swept in NY, and outscored 38-8 in the 3 games. Leave town at 31-30 and literally reeling. I hope we can do a little better against the ChiSox. -- Al

The reinforcements arrived this weekend: Céspedes, Matz and Lugo returned. Yo hit a grand slam yesterday and both Matz and Lugo gave sterling efforts yesterday and today.

Sadly Al, I just don't see much light at the end of the tunnel, nothing is working right now be it hitting, pitching, the injury bug is at it again with Machado, and even with som positive news that Britton may be on the mend by months end still have no idea when he will be available to pitch,..... I'm not jumping ship but looking around for a life preserver for sure.

Things just aren't going well. No pitching and no hitting = many losses. Hitting can be cyclical, so I'm not real worried about that, but the pitching is broken, plain and simple. Bad weekend for the B/W corridor fans. O's swept in NY and the Nats on the verge of being swept in DC, by Texas. And the Nats bullpen cost them 2 of those games. Just an ugly weekend all around. :( -- Al

I am so tired of watching the Nat's little league bullpen blow games that it has taken on the aspects of black comedy. It has become very predictable. Today the closer blew a 3-1 9th inning lead and needed a superb outfield assist by Harper to keep the game tied at 3-3. Then in the 11th, 'Gopher Ball' Kelley did his usual terrible job, giving up a 3-run Hr, losing the game 6-3. Kelley has now given up 8 Hrs in just 15.2 innings of work. His ERA is a terrible 7.47. Just as another example of the Nat's bad bullpen work, the pen has now yielded 30 Hrs this season. It is a bad joke and still no moves to correct it. -- Al
They do'od it again. Took over a 1-1 game in the 8th, 2 on, 1 out. Took 3 relievers to turn the game into a 5-1 deficit before the inning was over. Gosh, these guys are just awful. Our current crop of relief pitchers have ERA's that are quite incredibly high: 8.78, 7.47, 6.33, 5.12, 4.97, 4.30, 4.13, and, the odd-man out, 1.08. Obviously, the chances for disaster are extremely high. I'm not exaggerating when I say this team should have 10 more wins than it does, IF they had a good pen. Even an average pen gives them another 6-7 wins. The group they have are a disgrace. Maybe they should start to DFA a few of them and see if the others take the hint. This mess is extremely frustrating to watch. :rolleyes2::mad: -- Al

I saw today that their bullpen is last in the league. I thought we had that honor but glad to cede it to Washington. Unless they fix that it's going to hurt them in the post season.

Not to be the pessimist, but that's IF they make it to post season with this bullpen. I know they have a big lead, at the moment, but a lot of the lead is smoke and mirrors, built on their 16-6 start. They then lost Eaton and the team hasn't been the same offensively since then. Nats are only 22-18 since Eaton went down and the bullpen is a large reason why, but so is the sputtering offense. They also have a bad tendency to lose baserunners through stupid decisions at the worst possible time. This has cost them a couple of games. This team is deeply flawed and I don't know how they will respond when the Mets start to push them, which the Mets showed definite signs of being able to do this weekend. -- Al

14-0..I'm thinking the Yanks are for real.

I took my son Alec to that game, the first I've gone to since my back surgery (I don't think I'll go to another anytime soon, my back couldn't take all the walking and sitting in those hard plastic seats). We had pretty darn good seats (7th row of the second level between home and third), Severino looked terrific, Judge hit the ball with the highest exit velocity ever measured (his 1st inning homer), and it was a stress free game. There was a family of Orioles fans right near us, and I felt bad for their kids, who had to sit through a completely non-competitive game after a long drive to New York. The Yankees do look for real, but we are not even half-way through the season yet. All 5 teams in the East are still in contention, nobody is running away and hiding, so I will remain reserved in my optimism for now.

This year has been a very pleasant surprise so far, as has Judge, who is leading all AL triple crown categories, Sanchez has started to hold up to last year's form, and, despite missing a month is leading the AL catchers in homers and RBI's, and Hicks, who I was ready to write off after last season, came out of nowhere with an MVP like performance so far. Didi and Castro are also playing above my expectations, as are all of the pitchers not named Tanaka. So the other shoe could very easily drop. I'm not going to worry about it, and just enjoy watching game to game.

Jason, I hesitate to say give up this early, but the fact is the Giant season is now 40% done and the starting pitching simply has not stepped up in the absence of Bums. I was hoping to see them maybe stay around .500 but that hasn't happened. Maybe hang in to the All-Star break before giving up the ghost because there is always the chance the pitching could come around in the next month, but if it doesn't... -- Al

Al:

Thanks for the positive outlook. I have just about written them off. I am still riding the "interest" on the 3 World Series that they put in the bank in recent years but my patience is not infinite.

I will however stay on this thread because I like baseball and there are some other good teams worth watching etc.

Bi-weekly rant about the O's starting pitchers: O's have played 61 games, 40% of the season for all practical purposes. They have had 8 different pitchers start games, although 2 of them have only 1 start each. Of the pitchers who have started more than 1 game, only Dylan Bundy has a winning record @ 6-5. The starters have a combined record of 16-22. 16 wins by 8 pitchers in 61 games. About as bad as it gets. Starters ERAs combine at 5.08, led, again, by Bundy at 3.05. Only Miley is close to him with a 3.27 ERA, all others with multiple starts like Gausman, Jimenez, and Asher are over 6 per game with Tillman over 8. Add an average of 5.1 innings per start and the wonder is that the O's are still above .500 at 31-30. Bundy is virtually a one-man starting staff, with Miley decent, but a bad-luck pitcher. Miley has 5 QS, but is only 2-3 on the season. Bundy also has 11 of the O's 28 QS this season, as well as leading the staff in all other aspects. I find myself constantly wondering why the O's management doesn't do something, anything, to try and improve the starting staff. They seem content to stumble along and try to find the answer internally and it isn't working. For a franchise that made it's name on outstanding starting pitching, these are sorry days. -- Al
