2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Things seem to be a perfect storm of what's not going right for the O's. We all knew the starting pitching was weak, but no one could have expected the disaster it has actually been. Coupled with the offensive troubles of 3 huge bats, Trumbo, Davis, and Machado, and a recipe for last place is being cooked. Machado's Hr and RBI numbers aren't bad but his average is awful. Schoop and Mancini have been offensive saviors but they can't do it all themselves. O's still popping Hr's, but the RBI's are down. Also, it is obvious 1st base is not Mancini's best position defensively.:rolleyes2: There are a lot of things that have to change to keep the O's in the mix, maybe too many to fix in the time remaining, but a return to form by Machado, Davis, and Trumbo would sure help and, of course, a starting pitcher or 3. -- Al

A starting pitcher or 3, classic.

:)

I am still not sure what to make of Samardzija. His numbers are not terrible and his run support has been limited. Local radio says that he might be shopped to a a contender that can afford his salary. At this point it seems that he is not a good fit and maybe a team with some offensive firepower can use him in the playoffs. Boston was mentioned along with the Yankkees.

He would seem the perfect player for a salary dump. I read where Boston is satisfied with it's rotation but want 3B help, but never say never. NYY's seem likely. Can't figure him out, either. Good numbers but no results. One of those things that happens in a down year. -- Al

Finally at the break, my O's early season victories hit a snag when Britton went out, but even then the 2017 Orioles are a long way from even thinking of competing in any playoff race, 7.5 out is not out of the question, stranger things have surely happened but unless the O's trade for some serious starting pitching it may be more of the same, putting on my rally cap and hoping the 2nd half of the season is a bit more enjoyable.

I think the East and Central are still up for grabs. At least you're still in it!

O's certainly not dead yet but MUST get some starting pitching help, and I mean 2 pitchers minimum, or the playoffs are just a dream. -- Al

Nats held serve against the Braves today and get to the break with a 9.5 game lead. Bullpen actually did a decent job in long service today, giving up only 2 runs over their 5 2/3 innings work, allowing the Nats offense to stretch the lead for a 10-5 win. Like all other teams, the Nats get to the break kind of banged up with 3 starting position players on the DL, so the days off will be welcomed. -- Al

Just took a gander at the O's July schedule, they do not leave the comforts of Camden Yards until the 24th of July {eek3}...that's a lot of home cook'n, they still own one of the better home records in baseball, maybe that could help? maybe?

This is probably old news but Colon signed with the Twins. The Mets tried to sign him but they're not going anywhere and at his age he wanted to be on a contender.

Sammy, that will be the time to make their move but they still need to get the pieces in place. One of those is getting Davis back at 1st base. The defense there has suffered badly since he went down. Mancini needs to stay in the line-up, but Davis is much the preferable choice at 1st. -- Al

Be interesting to see if Colon has anything left to bring to the table, especially facing that extra hitter in the AL. -- Al

With the all-star break almost over I decided to take a minute to look at the standings across the league.

I am impressed by the Brewers. They are in first place in the NL Central yet they have the lowest payroll in the league at around $63 mil.

Back at it after a nice break..dare I say it???.....whatever......Lets go O's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see the Red Sox finally cut their losses and DFA'ed Sandoval. Cost them money but at least that menace is off the field. -- Al

He might do well somewhere else now that the contractual weight is off his shoulders. Of course, the Red Sox will be paying for awhile.

Now I know what that O really stands for....it's the "O" no here we go again :mad::mad:
Sammy, it's part of their master plan; spot the opposition 8 runs and then run them down when they get complacent.:rolleyes2: 8-6 as I write this. -- Al

Is "contractual weight" a pun?

On a serious note I do hope he gets another chance. He did a lot for the Giants, but according to some people that are close to him, it seems that he may have lost interest in the game.

Oh well, A for effort L for loss.
Tough loss. Tie the game after trailing by 8 only to lose by one. O's showed some serious guts in this game but no time or room for moral victories. O's need the real thing at this point, as tied for last, 8.5 games out is beginning to look a little like a deep hole, but nothing 2 or 3 effective starting pitchers won't fix. -- Al
