2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Parker Bridwell, the pitcher the Angels picked up from the Os for a bag of balls, had another good start tonight, giving up 1 run over six innings. In his six starts this year, he's only thrown one stinker. Maybe a diamond in the rough.

If he's an ex LET'S GO O'S!! pitcher, it's a lock he'll be good.......................

As an O's fan I hate to say this, but it looks like the Red Sox are positioning themselves to start walking away with the AL East. With the slumping of NY, and the rest of the teams being a hot mess, it seems the Sox have begun to take things in hand. Beginning to lose a bit of heart in the O's, who besides the ever-present pitching problems, are now exhibiting offensive problems having scored only 19 runs in their last 8 games (2-6) and 7 of those runs came in one of the wins. Someone needs to get it going or the annual AL East dogfight could end up being a love-in for the Sox. -- Al

Teams that looked good early on such as the Yankees and Rockies are fading a bit whereas teams that were picked at the outset of the season to do well such as the Astros, the Dodgers and the Nationals are showing why they were picked.

It's only July but, barring injuries, the Dodgers are looking very good. They can bludgeon you or win the close one. Last night I watched the latter part of the game between the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks (the second best team in the NL right now; if Nationals get bullpen help that may change), a 1-0 affair won by the Dodgers, and the combination of Baez and Janssen are deadly. The Dodgers are a fun team to watch and are going to be hard to beat.

Interesting article.

My son asks me why I still bother to watch the Mets when, as he puts it, "they suck!" My response is you root for your team, no matter what. More often than not I tell him that, unless you're a Yankee fan, your team is not going to be good and you live for those years when they have a great season. When they are not so good, you live for the wins, when your team comes off the field, shaking hands, high fiving, doing the little dances, whatever. Nothing better than that.

Brad:

As usual, spot on analysis. My final four at the mid-point of the season is made up of the Dodgers, Nats, Astros and Red Sox. I think the wildcards are still up in the air.

Thanks Jason.

The Nats are said to be interested in the Reds' Raisel Iglesias. If true and they get him, they will have cured a lot of their pen problems.

Very cool article Brad thanks for posting, and agree you stick with your team through thick and thin, take the good with the bad, I know all of us have spouted off on this page once or twice about how our teams "suck" :) but we live and die (sort of speak) with our fan favorite teams. yup, the losing seasons really do suck, but when your team stays in the hunt come September it's something magical about it that I can't find the words for, we've all experienced it and it's what draws us back to this sport/ thread come every early February, the chance to be there come September is always there.

Bit worried about O's starter Dylan Bundy, the mainstay of the staff this season. He started out really sharp (as did the O's) and was 5-1 with a 2.17 ERA after 7 starts. He allowed only 3 Hrs in his 45.2 innings and was looking really good. His last 11 starts have been a different matter. As the O's have slumped, so has Bundy. He is 3-7 with an ERA close to 6.6 and has allowed 15 Hrs in 62.1 innings. His current 8-8 record and 4.33 ERA is still best on the staff, by a wide margin, but he has not been the same pitcher since mid-May. I wonder if the work load (108 innings) has caught up with him. This is his second full season with the O's, last season being the first, and his previous high in IP is only 109.2, so his workload has doubled pretty fast. Perhaps the All-Star break will give him a needed rest but if he is wearing down, it won't be enough. Just another concern in a season full of them for the O's. -- Al

I think it was George who once mentioned that you need to enjoy the good times with your teams because eventually, no matter how great they are, a time will come when they are terrible.

As a Giants fan I have seen it all. I can remember one year when their TV commercial theme was literally "C'mon Giants, hang in there!" And of course I remember their recent World Series runs too. And now? Let's just say that until they are officially eliminated from playoff contention I have hope and after that, I will begin to look forward to next season.

Jason, I learned how to hang with my team, and deal with the frustration of never quite being good enough, by rooting for the SF Giants of the 60's, a decade where those super teams finished in 2nd place for 5 straight years, 65-69. Never lost my faith but was never to see the 3 M's when the big one (Marichal, Mays, and McCovey). Great teams that just fell short. -- Al

The 3 M's, still one of the greatest tri-fecta's to ever share the field.

The Giants gave them "honorary" rings for the 2010 Championship but I am sure they would have rather won it for themselves in 1962.

Just noticed I used 'when' instead of 'win'. I really have to learn to proofread. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Red Sox won last night going away, Yankees lost again, but hey, Quasimodo hit another tater, what's he averaging, one a game at this point? MFY fans were hoping that down 9-4 with a runner on 2nd and two outs in the bottom of the ninth he'd whack a 6 run home run and save the day, but he grounded out. Is it me or does he make a lot of outs to end games?

Orioles lost too; wow, didn't realize they're tied for last place now? When did that happen?

The O's campaign for last place has been trending for a while now and it appears to be quite achievable for them.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Baseball is a long season, it's a grind really, teams go through peaks and valleys. They can go cold, but can get hot too, so we'll see how things shake out.

Right now the MFY's, Devil Rays, Twins and Royals with cheese are all fighting for the two wild card spots; none of those teams are going to blow anyone away, not to mention I don't see the Devil Rays or the Twins making any traded deadline moves...............

Another fantastic O's melt down last nite....up 6-0 in the 3rd and found a way to lose 9-6 and the bad thing was I could feel at some point the Twins would come back, this Oriole team could be up by 20 runs and I still wouldn't feel comfortable, management will have some tough decisions to make this month, to many big dollar players not producing then you got Machado's trillon dollar contact to deal with, either way it's gonna get worse I believe before it gets better.

Things seem to be a perfect storm of what's not going right for the O's. We all knew the starting pitching was weak, but no one could have expected the disaster it has actually been. Coupled with the offensive troubles of 3 huge bats, Trumbo, Davis, and Machado, and a recipe for last place is being cooked. Machado's Hr and RBI numbers aren't bad but his average is awful. Schoop and Mancini have been offensive saviors but they can't do it all themselves. O's still popping Hr's, but the RBI's are down. Also, it is obvious 1st base is not Mancini's best position defensively.:rolleyes2: There are a lot of things that have to change to keep the O's in the mix, maybe too many to fix in the time remaining, but a return to form by Machado, Davis, and Trumbo would sure help and, of course, a starting pitcher or 3. -- Al

You can watch Machado swing for the fences on every pitch. :rolleyes2:Chris
