2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (2 Viewers)

Is it the end of the road for the ageless wonder, Bartolo Colon? He was DFAed by Atlanta today (his 44th birthday), after pitching to a 2-8 record with a 8.14 ERA this season. Going to be tough for him to catch on anywhere except that I know Baltimore needs help...:rolleyes2: -- Al

He couldn't have gone from that good a pitcher to a terrible one overnight. I'd like to see the Mets give him a shot; they're down three starters.

Colon's numbers are really off this season. His usual strength, eating innings, is down, having pitched less than 5 innings per start and he has allowed 92 hits in 63 innings. The trouble would seem to be more than just the ERA. -- Al

Went to the a game he was supposed to pitch but he was scratched. We still received this souvenir. ;)

In what has become a depressingly common theme this season, the Nats bullpen once again turned a close game, a 1-0 deficit after 7, into a 5-0 deficit going into the bottom of the 9th. Naturally the Nats rally fell just short as the Cubs prevailed 5-4. The problems have begun to take a toll on the fans. Taken from the Obit column of a Richmond newspaper: Killebrew, Patrick, "Pat", aged 68, passed away peacefully at home, June 20, 2017, after watching the Washington Nationals relief pitchers blow yet another lead. Beloved father and husband, longtime attorney, former US Navy navigator and avid baseball fan and player...In lieu of flowers, send "donations" to the "Nationals Bullpen Fund". The obit is real, though probably a bit of tongue in cheek. Then again... -- Al
Shocker in DC! Nats bullpen blows another game. Took a 4-2 lead into the 9th and the pen did what it does best...lose games. Final was 5-4, Cubs. The pen put one game out of reach and lost one in a series the Nats could have swept. I've lost count but the pen has now lost a dozen games or so. The platitudes keep flowing by the home announcers and club officials but the problems remain and the losses continue. If not for the incompetents in the pen, the Nats would own the best record in baseball and I don't think it impossible they could be pushing 60 wins right now. The pen makes any kind of winning streak impossible and guarantees mediocrity as the team sputters along. It is painful to watch. -- Al

I see Trea Turner has a broken wrist. Tough loss but shouldn't hurt the Nats too much in the short term because of the division in which they play.

It is a real bummer. Going to be real interested to see what they do. This means that both the pre-season projected #1 and #2 batting spots (Eaton and Turner) are now on the DL. They covered Eaton's loss pretty well but I'm not sure they can cover Turner's loss. -- Al

uBADo drives me insane. Tonight he throws one of the best games of the season, by anyone, gets a win, allowing 0 runs and yet the next time he pitches he's just as liable to last less than 2 innings and give up 6 runs.:rolleyes2: Anyway, it was a beauty tonight. -- Al

Just got home, didn't have access to the game but was getting updates on my phone, once again a perfect storm arrives at Ubadass pitches a unbelievable game {eek3}{eek3}{eek3} at this point I'll take whatever we can to get a win, 2 series wins on the road at that, the wheels on the wagon are still pretty shaky but at least the horses have had a drink. ^&grin

The bad news is that the Nats now need a shortstop and a closer. The good news is that there will be plenty of sellers as the season moves towards the half-way point.

Don't look now but the Giants have won 3 in a row (about to be 4 in a row) and they are now only 23 games out of first!

Found the actual numbers: after last night's bullpen implosion, the Nats have blown 13 saves and have now lost 6 games where they led after 8 innings. Rizzo and management are fiddling while Rome burns and will regret this. -- Al

Not that it helps in the relief department, but during the Giants' broadcast the subject of trading Cueto came up as he plans to opt out of his contract at the end of the season and does not plan on re-signing with San Francisco. The team rumored to be most interested is the Nats.

Hadn't heard this one, Jason. Never hurts to have another starting pitcher but the Nats needs, as you mention, are for bullpen help (and maybe SS, but we'll see on that). Our #4 starter, Roark, has been having a down year and #5, Ross, has been hit or miss, so Cueto wouldn't be unwelcome but we have more immediate problems. -- Al

Well its July 1st, time to finally assess my team this season. They are 1 game out of 1st place, 8 games over .500, despite suffering from a spate of injuries to many key players and young prospects, and playing 7 games under .500 over the past two weeks. At approximately the halfway point, Aaron Judge is still leading the AL in homers (27), RBI's (64), on base percentage (.442) and is batting .327. At this point, while he still may hit the rookie wall, he certainly looks like more than a flash in the pan. Gary Sanchez is hitting around .290, with 13 homers, despite missing a month of the season. He has the second most homers in the history of the league over his first 100 games played. He also looks for real. Among the pitchers, Severino and the rookie, Montgomery, have looked good pretty much all season. Pineda remains inconsistent, as does Tanaka. CC (or Sherman Klump as George likes to call him) was our best pitcher, but has been on the DL for the last two weeks. The bullpen was badly overused due to the injuries to Sherman Klump, Aroldis Chapman, and the inconsistency of Tanaka and Pineda, so has turned from a strength to a weakness over the past two weeks. Despite this two week swoon (which they finally seem to be climbing out of), they are only one game out of first, and lead the wildcard. I see no reason that the Yankees can't be competitive for the rest of the regular season, and have a legitimate chance at the playoffs, with the team as constituted. I would love to see a starting pitcher or a first baseman added, but I wouldn't trade any of the top prospects, and would rather stand pat then trade any of them. This has been a fun and unexpected season, when we were supposed to be rebuilding.

Al:

It seemed that it was based on the fact that the Nats are in "win now mode" and Cueto might be a rental. Plus, the Giants want prospects and the Nats have some minor league players that interest San Francisco. The other team that was mentioned was LA (based on their rich farm system), but the Giants will not trade him to a team within their division, especially the Dodgers.

Every season each team seems to have a bad luck pitcher, the one who labors every 5th day, pitches well, and gets little reward because of lack of run support, bad timing, or whatever. This season on the Nats, that pitcher is Gio Gonzalez. He is quietly having a terrific year but it should be much better, record wise. On a staff with Mad Max and Strasburg, Gio is the #3 starter with a 7-3 record and 2.77 ERA, which with a little luck/support/better bullpen could easily be a 13-1 record. Gio has 8 starts where he has allowed 1 or fewer runs (50 innings, 29 hits, 7 runs allowed) yet he is only 2-2 in those games. Lack of run support cost him 2 of the games, and the other 4 were all the fault of the bullpen, as he left each of those games with the lead but the pen blew them all. It would not be a stretch to blame the pen for the 2 losses, as well, because in each game Gio yielded 1 run but the bullpen allowed further runs to score and in each case the Nats comeback fell 1 run short, 5-4 and 2-1, leaving Gio with the unlucky loss. That's baseball and all you can do is your best and hope for the win. In the words of that famous New Yorker, Roseanne Roseannadanna, "It's always something." -- Al

Make that two games out after that tire fire of a bullpen blew a 6-2 lead in the 8th inning.

Betances is Mr Automatic; he comes into the game and the other team automatically rallies................................
