2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

Tough loss. Tie the game after trailing by 8 only to lose by one. O's showed some serious guts in this game but no time or room for moral victories. O's need the real thing at this point, as tied for last, 8.5 games out is beginning to look a little like a deep hole, but nothing 2 or 3 effective starting pitchers won't fix. -- Al

Turned it off at 8-0. Chris

Bumgarner makes his return to the mound in about 15 minutes, and Cueto is now on the DL. Even when things go right this year for the Giants, something else goes wrong.

Ugly loss by the O's tonight, who once again spotted the Cubs a huge lead, 7 runs, and were never really in this one as a result. In the 2 games since the All-Star game, O's starting pitching has gone 7.2 innings, giving up 16 hits, and 15 earned runs. Same old, same old. -- Al

At this point Al, if we going to be cellar dwellers for the next few years just blow this team up now and try to pick up some young talent, hate to say it, but clear the books on C. Davis, Trumbo, Machado even A. Jones if that's an option, there is a need for those guys for playoff teams and we could make a good run at some younger talent as what we have right now ain't workn.:mad:

Nats won against the Reds tonight, 10-7, with Scherzer going 6 scoreless. Nats had a 10-0 lead but the bullpen stunk again, yielding 7 runs in 3 innings. Good thing the offense is rolling. After tonight, the Nats have a mini-murderers row in place, their #3 - #6 hitters, Harper (.328, 22 Hrs, 69 RBIs), Zimmerman (.322, 19 Hrs, 63 RBIs), Murphy (.343, 14 Hrs, 66 RBIs), and Rendon (.315, 18 Hrs, 61 RBIs), which can make the bullpen less of a worry, as long as they keep scoring 10+ runs (which they have done 16 times this season). As long as the offense keeps ticking and Scherzer, Strasburg, and Gonzalez keep pitching so well, it will be tough for anyone to catch the Nats during the regular season. Things will be different in the playoffs where good pitching stops good hitting and bullpens are a much bigger deal. We shall see. -- Al

Sammy, another week or 2 of this type of play and it may come to what you propose. Problem is the money being paid to Davis and Trumbo. Machado may be the best bet to get some young pitchers with. The Red Sox need a 3rd baseman, the NYY's need a 1st baseman, so there are places to go. I would hate to see Jones go but now is the time before his production really starts to slide and he will be 32 in August. Something has to be done but the O's absolutely have to get pitching or they're just wasting their time and effort. -- Al

Bumgarner was respectable in his return, but it did not translate to a win. I'll take the comeback as a good sign but the lose as a greater predictor of the Giant's 2017 season.

The long awaited moves to help the Nats bullpen have started as the Nats have announced a trade with Oakland that brings vets LHP Sean Doolittle and RHP Ryan Madson to the Nats for RHP Blake Treinen and 2 prospects. Both Madson and Doolittle are doing well and will be a big help whereas Treinen had been a huge disappointment in the Nats pen. He just never got untracked this year. -- Al

They're serviceable pitchers but they still need a big time closer.

Rizzo is not done, hopefully, and the Nats badly need serviceable right now. Nats still have a couple of A+ prospects to dangle, so we shall see.:wink2: -- Al

Be glad to see the Cubs leave Baltimore as they have made mash of the O's. In 3 games the Cubs have had leads of 8,7, and 6 runs. Tough to win coming from a hole that deep in each game. uBADo got shelled today, lasing only 3.2 innings and yielding 11 hits and 6 runs. His season ERA is now 7.01! In the 3 games, the O's SP's lasted a total of 11.1 innings, giving up 27 hits and 21 runs. Pitiful and getting worse. Hard to fathom how a professional baseball team can have such incompetent SP's. The ERA's of the 5 SP's are 4.33, 5.40, 6.39, 7.01, and 7.90. How can the O's possibly expect to contend, much less win, behind these kind of numbers. I don't recall ever seeing numbers this bad for a whole staff this far into a season. Just mind-blowing. -- Al

Os gave up 27 runs in three games
{sm3} To answer your question Al, they're not supposed to win with those numbers. :redface2: Chris

Tough span for the O's. They have such a great core of young offensive talent, they are in the top 10 in MLB payroll yet they can't seem to put together a decent pitching staff.

Counting tonight's game with Texas, the O's have 71 games left in the season. Sounds like a lot of games, but the truth is time is starting to run out on the O's if they want to get back into the playoff race. After this past weekends disaster against the Cubs, the O's are 42-49 on the season. Simple arithmetic tells a hard story. The O's must go 48-23 over these 71 games just to reach the 90 win level, considered to be the win total needed to have a shot at the playoffs. In all of baseball, only Houston and the Dodgers have won games at the rate the O's must now achieve. To break it down further, the O's terrible record on the road means it is not unreasonable to expect that to continue and with 34 road games left, a possible 12-22 record can be expected, bringing the possible record to 54-71. This means the O's must go 36-1 at home over the rest of the season. Obviously, this won't happen, so the O's must improve to a winning record on the road, somehow, just to have a shot. It is a very difficult position the O's are now in. Won't throw in the towel yet, but the next couple of weeks will tell the tale. No time left for excuses and platitudes, the O's MUST start winning tonight and keep it up for the rest of the season. -- Al

The Nats just finished a 4 game sweep of the Reds, scoring 35 runs in the 4 games, while the SP's yielded a grand total of 1 earned run in their 27.1 innings of work. Fortunately, the bullpen wasn't a real factor and help will be in place starting with the Dodger series tomorrow. In the Reds series, Harper retook the Nats RBI lead back from Murphy today with a 3-run Hr. Harper now has 72 RBIs to Murphy's 71. The Nats are also a season high 20 games over .500 and playing well, even with 3-4 regulars out of the line-up on a game to game basis. Still need a closer and maybe a 5th starter, unless Edwin Jackson proves up to the mark against LA. -- Al

Alright, alright, alright. O's got excellent pitching and just enough offense to start their push for the playoffs with a 3-1 win over Texas. Only 47 more wins to 90. -- Al

Meanwhile on the left coast...........

The Giants are now 29.5 games out of first, only a .5 game away from the dreaded 30 games out. This season has now become a slog of a retreat, hoping to avoid some embarrassing milestones. I think 100 loses is the one that would hurt the most.

Slight error in the above statement. The Nats play the Angels starting tonight, not the Dodgers. Interleague play got me again as I saw the LA on the schedule and just assumed it meant Dodgers. Anyway, Trout vs Harper should be good TV. -- Al

Welcome to the world of the also rans. Last night, the Mets brought back from the Minors a pitcher who had been sent down earlier this year because he was prone to giving up big bombs. Nothing changed. He turned a 3-1 deficit to a 6-1 deficit. The simmer of Declining Expectations continues.

Heard that the Giants are hot on the trail of the Marlin's Giancarlo Stanton. Would be an excellent building block for next season. -- Al
