2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

The commentator said that in order to makes those kinds of trades you need a deep roster, deep pockets and a deep farm system. The Dodgers have all of that and then some. One commentator also mentioned that it could just be a rumor started by the Dodgers themselves in order to artificially drive up the price that competitors may have to pay in trades.

I get it and in all honesty it probably only bothers me because it is the Dodgers. If it were the Giants I would say it is the greatest strategy ever but since it is the Dodgers I will say that it is completely underhanded and bad for the game. ^&grin

While watching the O's last night my son mentioned it was time to pull Miley. I replied Showalter had a bad habit of leaving pitchers in too long. Miley then promptly gave up a 3 run homer. :rolleyes2:

Down 5-1, nice to see the comeback. Currently down 7-1against Houston. Chris

Well you really can't put to much of that logic in when USUCKO pitches, because he sucks from the 1st inning!!!:mad: want to kill a good rally or winning streak?? toss the ball to Ubado! promise you anything good will end in misery soon enough.

Another typical outing from uBADo. Another huge multi-run deficit that has to be made up. That's no way to run a railroad. uBADo has the highest ERA in MLB among pitchers with at least 75 IP. What a deal the O's got with uBADo. A 4 year deal worth $50 million and what do they get...30 wins...only cost the O's $1,666,000 per win. Time for the O's to resign him before he goes FA and gets snapped up by some other suck...er, team. :rolleyes2::mad:{eek3} -- Al

"uBADo" :salute::

Under the heading of 'Same old problem': The O's are 4-4 since the break and the reason why is as old as the game itself...starting pitching. In 3 of their 4 wins, the O's have gotten excellent starting pitching, giving the team a chance to score and maintain leads with a decent bullpen closing off the opposition. In their 4 losses, the starting pitching has been HORRIBLE, putting the O's in a deep hole before the O's can even get into the game. In the 4 losses, the O's have faced deficits of 8, 7, 6, and 5 runs by the 3rd, 5th, 4th, and 2nd innings, virtually burying them. Now, in 2 cases, the O's have rallied from way back just to lose by a run, but a loss is a loss and feeling good about a 1-run loss is a moral victory reserved for April, not July. It is obvious that the O's have the offensive power to be a factor, but the pitching is just too big a problem to overcome for a playoff run. The big question thus remains, will the O's stand pat and keep whipping a dead horse or will they start to dismantle the team to rebuild? My guess is a drastic rebuild is a non-starter as Angelos is something like 87 years old and will not want to wait out a rebuilding period. That being the case, maybe the O's can at least cut a few of their bigger SP problems (read uBADo and Miley here) and just take a flyer on some minor league talent or sign an older vet. Honestly, how can that be any worse than continuing to throw pitchers like uBADo and Miley out there every 5th day? Time to get off your butts and take a chance, Orioles. -- Al

Agreed, BUT, the O's have brought up more pitchers from the minors than anyone else. Chris

True enough and the answer has not been there but I like the chances with the unknown pitchers from the minors a lot more than I do with the current starters like uBADo and Miley, who have proved that they are not up to the task, and keep proving it 9 out of 10 times. I simply don't see the point to continuing to use pitchers you know can't get it done as opposed to taking a shot with an unknown that might surprise. It really is desperation but I think it's come to that. Nor do I believe that simply replacing uBADo and Miley will fix things as Tillman and Gausman have largely been disasters too, but I believe they still have an upside that could show through, maybe. I'm not sure anything can really be done for the starting pitching with only 66 games left. Should have been done long ago. -- Al

This situation kind of reminds me of the Giants when they had Zito. For the longest time management would keep starting him loss after loss despite the fact that they had young pitching talent available in the minors. As a fan it was incredibly frustrating.

Cutting Ubaldo and Milley would cost the Os the remainder of their salaries. Unfortunately there are no veterans out there waiting to be signed who are any better. The Mets signed some fill in starters this year and they were awful. You are probably stuck with what you have unless the team decides to be a buyer. Frankly, they seem more sellers than buyers. Right now, like some other teams, they are in the middle: not bad enough to be an automatic tear down but not good enough to compete.

When it comes to the trade deadline the worst thing you can be is mediocre.

Good analysis of the O's right now. Angelos has apparently given permission to consider offers on Brach, O'Day, and Britton but in a public forum yesterday, GM Duquette said he isn't interested in trading away his vets for prospects and the like, so there appears to be no clear path, even among ownership/management, for the O's to follow right now. In the same forum, Buck basically said the same thing you just did about uBADo and Miley, that they're stuck with them until a better option is presented, even though he is as frustrated as anyone else. Gonna be a long August if the O's just stand pat. -- Al

Aside from the stats, I don't know how well those three are doing but perhaps Duquette found that the return he could get for them was not high and decided that they might as well take a chance. I think the Royals are in a somewhat similar but different position in that they have a chance to win the Central but can't afford to sign their players next year so they intend to try to win the Central as a last hurrah. I think the Mets are finding that, aside from Addison Reed and maybe Duda, the return is poor. However, I think they're willing to jettison them, no matter the return. They're praying that someone will take Cabrera off their hands.

Sunday at home has to be the worst day of the week; Mets are something like 2-8 on Bloody Sunday. They had a chance to get get to 4 under 500 but lost. Now it's back to 6 under as they hit the road.

Been super busy the past two weeks or so, attending a show in VA, then playing catch up all week upon my return, plus raftloads of orders coming in during that time as well (you guys are awesome, thanks everybody).................watched bits and pieces of the Red Sox games over the weekend, they lost two of three to the tire fire known as the Angels................I don't know what it is about the Angels, but they've managed to give the Red Sox fits over the years, this weekend was no exception. The ultimate insult was when the immortal Valbuene hit the go ahead home run, did a bat flip and then pimped his way around the bases, he took longer to get from third to home than the Bataan Death March, what a clown.

I miss the days where he would have gotten knocked on his *** his next at bat, but not in todays touchy feely world.........................they just keep burping and farting along, four black holes in their line up at catcher, first, shortstop and third, they've had very good pitching but their offense is just offensive...............rumors are swirling Dombrowski will try to land a bat at the trade deadline; sorry, "a bat" is not going to cut it vs the Astros or the Indians with that pitching staff of theirs........................Patriots training camp starts on the 27th thank God.

And somehow the Cubs are back in 1st place?
Yeah, that was kind of sudden. Cubs had the good fortune to come out of the break against the O's, who played horribly, and were able to get off to a fast start, going 8-1 while the Brewers have face-planted since the break, going 3-7, thus the tie in so few games. Should find out if the Brewers can hang in over their next 6 games as they have to play the Nats and the Cubs. Will be interesting games for the Brew Crew. -- Al

Looks like the Dodgers' chances may have taken a hit as Kershaw went on the DL. I assume the Dodgers will now look for a starter.

Barring any surprises it seems that the only playoff spot open for grabs in the NL is the Central Division.

It appears Darvish is now in play. Nats fans holding their breath as Strasburg left yesterday's game with arm stiffness. No word on it as of yet. Nats were considering a possible additional SP if Edwin Jackson fails in next start, and this will be a priority if Stras goes down. -- Al
