2017 Baseball Season: Let's Play Two! (1 Viewer)

The Red Sox are now officially out of first place as they lost again last night while the MFY's, fresh off of their brinks job of a trade a few weeks ago are now in first place. They looked like dead men walking for a month, while the Red Sox farted around and couldn't put them away.

I love how the MFY's acquire talent for tomato cans while the Red Sox and other teams make trades and gut their farm systems.

Funny how the season slips away for the Red Sox the same week that the Patriots season starts; one sports door closes, another one opens.

Adios 2017 Red Sox; I'd say it's been fun, but this is one of the most unlikeable Red Sox teams I can ever remember, between Price calling out a hall of famer in Eckersley over critical comments he made about some of the pitchers (God forbid anyone do that, we should just coddle all these overpaid babies, not pick on them) to stories about how the players call the shots and the manager is just a puppet, they are not a likeable bunch at all.

Their offense has been anemic all year long, the young talent has not produced and they miss Ortiz, they have huge offensive holes as catcher, first and third as well, they are just not very good with the bats this year.

As I've stated in the past, this is the beginning of one of those MFY runs where they win the division several years in a row and move on to the WS with Quasimodo leading the way, their farm system is loaded and they've got a lot of money coming off of the books to be able to dive into free agency and sign Harper and whoever else they desire.

Can't wait for posts from Louis telling us all about how great the MFY's are doing on a daily basis for the next few years while the LET'S GO O'S!! and the Red Sox battle it out for last place, talk about exciting stuff............:rolleyes2:

I hope Brady's health holds up and Stevens and the Celtics go on a run as baseball will not be berry berry good to me for awhile..............

No battle there George, the O's will have the AL East cellar on lock down all to themselves by mid August at the latest.

I really don't understand this attitude; every team during a season has ups and downs. I think you've become too used to the Patriots winning so often that when a team in one of the other sports encounters some rough waters, you abandon ship.

Most teams usually enjoy occasional success, surrounded by seasons of less than resounding success. As a fan of one of those other teams, I savor every win; I was up until 130 last night, fighting off sleep, watching the Mets beat the Mariners. The season is over for them but it was worth seeing it, seeing the players coming off the field, shaking hands. In the world of sports, nothing better.

Most teams and their fans would love to be in the Red Sox position: a winning record with a chance for the playoffs.

Maybe we can petition the league to allow the Orioles offense and the Red Sox pitching to merge; wow, what a team that would be.

I guess that is part of the fun (and frustration) of the trade deadline. Rumors abound and then the guy ends up with someone that was never mentioned as part of the rumors.

You might have been right after all Jason. The Dodgers have balked at giving up any top prospects and are said to be "bargain hunting."

They brought this nitwit Dombrowski in and all he's done is trade away all their top tier prospects; he traded away prospects for Carson Smith, who has yet to throw a pitch two years later, traded for some 8th inning guy from the Brewers who's done for the year, maybe his career, with arm problems, he traded Shaw for him, who's hitting home runs left, right and center at third base, which is a black hole for this team after fatso Sandoval flamed out, what a complete bust he was, he basically stole 60 million, no check that, 80 million dollars from the Red Sox because he couldn't stay away from the buffet at Golden Corral.

He's gutted the farm system.

The kids everyone raves about have done virtually nothing, they kept harping on how it's all home grown talent, not a bunch of high priced free agents.

Who cares where they come from if they can't hit.

I watch this team night after night underperform offensively and waste quality start after quality start, they traded for Nunez; yeah, he'll save us, what a blockbuster move that was.

Watch when the MFY's land Sonny Gray for two bags of balls, five bats and a Babe Ruth autographed baseball while the Red Sox trade away the rest of their prospects for a rent a player who'll do nothing.

Mark it down now; in pen.............................

Teams always make moves that don't always move; no one has a crystal ball. However, in spite of it all, although the faces of GM and the players change, the man and woman in the stands doesn't change.

After tonight's loss, the O's are left with the daunting (and highly unlikely) task of going 42-18 in their remaining 60 games to reach 90 wins. Even a slightly more realistic 85 wins requires a 37-23 streak and probably leaves them out of the WC. They need to jump 6 teams to reach the WC, which they are 6.5 games out of. The numbers are heavily against them at this point but I am going to wait until the Texas series is over and Aug. 1 rolls around before officially throwing in the towel. I want to see what moves the O's make before the deadline and whether they can rally against Texas. -- Al
Listening to MASN's Wall to Wall baseball show, about O's baseball, and they made the point that the fewest wins that have made the 2nd WC spot is 86. This means the O's need to go 38-22. The pundits are not optimistic, although it is possible on a number basis. It does seem beyond a team with only 1 effective starting pitcher. -- Al

Lots of questions as to why the O's traded for the Phillies Jeremy Hellickson. My question would be, 'Why not trade for a RH starter that has a lifetime winning record and is having an adequate season on a last place club?'. I mean, how does this hurt the O's who need 4 starters? Hellickson is 6-5 with a 4.73 ERA in 20 starts for the last place Phillies. His ERA makes him the second lowest ERA on the O's starting staff. Considering the state of the O's SP staff, this trade can't hurt and could work out well. O's have to try something and this trade is low cost, low risk. -- Al

Fun with numbers: Over the course of 128 years, the Dodgers and Giants have played each other 2453 times. The Giants lead the series 1236 wins to 1203, the other games were ties. Over the years, the Giants have won 23 pennants and 8 World Series titles (6 and 3 while in SF), while the Dodgers have won 22 pennants and 6 WS titles (10 and 5 while in LA). Incredibly close numbers in all regards for such a long-lived series. Even more amazing, according to ESPN, only 85 runs separate the two teams, although I don't know which gets #1 as it wasn't mentioned in what I read. -- Al

Although no where near the Sox and Yankees rivalry it is great nonetheless. One thing I like about the current rosters is the fact that we get lots of Bumgarner vs. Kershaw match-ups.

The O's Gausman was brilliant tonight, allowing 0 runs in 8.2 innings, and winning 4-0 in Texas. It is his 3rd QS and win in a row, having allowed 1 run in the 20.2 innings over these 3 starts. He has raised his record to 8-7 from a 3-7 low point. Maybe, just maybe, he has figured 'it' out. In his last 7 starts, since June 27, he is 5-0. In 5 of those starts he has pitched 33 innings total and allowed just 1 run. The other 2 starts were disasters, typical of his struggles this season, allowing 13 runs in 7 innings, but he got ND's in both games. His recent streak of good games is nothing but great news for the beleaguered O's staff. This is the Gausman the O's were expecting from Day 1. Let's hope he stays this consistent for the rest of the season. -- Al

On a down note for the O's, and a great part of their problem in winning games, is the continued struggles at the plate for 3 of their biggest hitters. Season average for Machado is .238, for Davis it is .222, and for Trumbo, .238. Hard to believe these 3 big boppers could all be having down years, but there it is. Add the SS Tejada's .236 average and 4 starters are hitting below .240, making it tough to produce runs on a consistent basis which is why they have scored 2 or fewer runs in 30 of their 103 games. Coupled with the poor SP for most of the season, it makes it tough to win. -- Al

The Giants offense has been terrible all year but much worse lately. I tend to think that the fact that they are not going to make it to the playoffs is in the back of their minds? The effort seems to be there, but the hits and runs are not. It is even happening to Posey. Maybe the O's big hitters are going through the same thing?

Jason, the Big 3 hitters, Machado, Davis, and Trumbo, have been having problems all year. It just appears to be a perfect storm of down years all occurring at the same time. All 3 are down in Hrs and RBI's (in Trumbo and Davis' cases, quite drastically), as well as BA. Only Machado appears to have any chance of coming close to last year's power numbers. Wish I could say it was because of the playoff situation, but it's not and has been a season-long slump for them. -- Al

Al:

I see what you are saying, it is rare that all of your big hitters have an off year.

Oh well, I guess the 2017 season wasn't meant for the teams in orange and black.

A promising road trip -- not that it mean that much -- has turned ugly. They won the first two against the Pods, Matz (as is becoming his habit) was terrible the next night and a kid from Double A got beaten up. Yesterday, deGrom pitched well enough but the offense was non existent and today both were non existent. And so it goes.

The Giants get swept by the Dodgers to fall 34.5 games back in the West. There is no shame in getting swept by a team as good as the Dodgers, but as a Giants fan it always hurts when the Dodgers beat you, let alone sweep you.

Nats avoided getting swept by the Rockies thanks to one big inning in last night's game. Jackson pitched well and the uninspired offense did just enough in the 5th inning to win it, 3-1. The Rockies won the first 2 games of the series as the Nats looked disinterested for the most part. Rockies caught a break as the Nats started their #4, 5, and a rookie call-up pitcher in the series. Fortunately, the #5 (Jackson), was sharp. -- Al

O's stayed on life-support in the WC race, beating Texas 2 of 3 and actually tying them for WC position. A series loss in Texas would have about finished them but things are still very dicey. There are 58 games left and up to 10 teams still in the WC contest, although several, like the O's, are on the edge of being realistically out of it. The vast majority of the O's remaining games are against teams with playoff aspirations so it is going to be a tough road. It will be interesting to see if the O's make some moves over the next 5 hours or whether they stand pat and essentially throw in the towel. -- Al
