you should have been there sunday. somebody had a 2 ft long model of Dr Zarkoff's spaceship from Flash Gordon. it was blue and looked freat the only problem was that it was $795.and there seemed like there were a lot of people in attendance. other than that there was no shock in awe like the old days when figarti always came up with something big. the manufacturers need to go back to unveiling some thing new at the shaow
I am more than happy to disagree with quite a few of the above comments from both Gary and Hawkeye!
In my personal opinion this year's Show was one of the very best of recent years...I arrived on the previous Monday and was immediately impressed by the 'new look' of the totally refurbished main lobby, bar and restaurant area...Stylish, practical and much more comfortable than before!
The Show organisers, Roger & Jan Garfield were present and were busy organising the 'Welcome & Information Desk' in the main lobby...A 'First' for the Show and a great idea to let both collectors. And passers by and fellow guests know that there was a toy soldier Show in town and happening this week right here in the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg!!!
Large colourful posters, displays and even a British Coldstream Guardsman were omnipresent.
K&C and other companies and individuals began arriving and setting up in their rooms from Wednesday onwards and what a cornucopia of delights was available and on show...and for sale! Much depends on what any particular collector likes and actually collects and also, importantly, reflects on their own personal point of view and what excites them.
My own tastes, I like to think, are fairly broad and inclusive and therefore I am never disappointed only excited by the truly amazing variety and scope of what is on offer and available.
Numbers attending were definitely 'UP'on present years and a very welcome change of direction! Friday Saturday & Sunday were much busier and those attending were spending some 'real money' as they went from room-to-room and table-to-table. During and after the 'Show' I spoke to quite a few very happy traders and dealers.
I have been attending 'Chicago' on an Annual basis since 1984, just after K&C was founded. it was and is the finest multi day Toy Soldier Show in the world bar none! Some have been better than others but all have provided the opportunity to meet old friends (and make new ones)...At the same time you see the incredible variety of the most amazing toy soldiers to suit all kinds of tastes...and all sizes of budgets. And you often get to meet your favourite dealer and/or manufacturer in person, often on a 'one to one' basis.
If, after several days of all of that, you walk away disappointed or unfulfilled then, I regret to say, it may be a reflection of your own narrow tastes than the fault of the Show itself. Everyone involved in the Show works their ***** off to try and make it a great experience for all taking part...collectors, dealers, manufacturers and even just casual visitors and 'passers by'.
This year's 'Chicago Show' was one of the very, very best...I'm already looking forward to next year's!!!
Very best wishes and...very happy collecting!
