Nike must be mortified. Less than a minute into the big game, Duke's leading scorer and one of the nation's best players, Williamson, tried to plant his foot and his Nike shoe simply exploded, the whole sole ripping away from the upper, causing Williamson to crumble to the court losing the ball, injuring his knee, and being knocked out of the game for the duration. Duke never recovered from losing him and never really threatened to take the lead after his injury. Nike showed it's a** to a national audience on ESPN. Would like to be a fly on the wall at Nike's next board meeting. -- Al

Nike stock was already down 2% before this event. :smile2:

Duke blaming the injury for the loss. BUT, they have two other top 5 draft picks. Chris

UK recovered from Tenn blowout to beat Ole Miss in a close one Tues night. Must beat UF tomorrow and do well in next week's SEC tournament to get a #1 seed. #1 seeds are statistically imporant in March Madness as they, the 1 seeds, overwhelmingly win the championship although I don't remember the exact stat. Don't think UK will win it all this yr, but there is a chance. :smile2: Chris

The SEC is strong this year, Kentucky, Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State are all locks for the Tournament while Ole Miss, Auburn and 'Bama are on the bubble.

Turgeon sucks, big time. He cost the Terps the game in the Big 10 tourney today with an ill-timed tantrum that drew a technical, resulting in a 5 point run by Nebraska that broke the Terps momentum and left them grasping for a miracle. Terps played like a bunch of pikers but Turgeon cost them the game. -- Al

Awful.

A really ugly loss and it has become the norm for a Turgeon led Terp team. This is the third year in a row that the Terps have been 'one and done' in the first round of the Big 10 tourney, and they have been the higher ranked team each time. I have no hope that the Terps will do much better in the Big Dance. -- Al

When you have as much talent as Maryland and you don't win the coach is the one to blame. No excuse for a program like that to be so poorly led.

Watched Duke vs North Carolina last night. What a great game with a host of great players.
Zion Williamson is the real deal....speed, reflexes, strength and great court sense. He has
great rebounding and defensive skills as well. At 6'7" and 270 pounds of pure muscle he will
help an NBA team be a contender, probably at the strong forward position. Reminds me a little
of Charles Barkley but much quicker and better reflexes.
Even though I can't stand Dolan I would love to see the Knicks get him, they need a revival.

Tennessee is a great anomly. I can see them going to the Final Four and I can see them getting knocked out in the first round.

Have to admit that my interest in basketball has waned over the years. Both professional and college. With the pros, the fact that the Lakers have tanked is a big part. They were the team that I followed - and honestly not a big fan of LeBron. Any team he is on becomes all about him as a celebrity. With college basketball, the corruption, greed, one and done players and continued dominance of a handful of programs makes it a drag. I'm sick of Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina in the same way I'm sick of Alabama and Clemson dominating college football for the last decade. Good for those programs but not for the sport. I will watch the last five minutes of a close game but can't sit through much more. The tournament has become like St. Pats Day. An ersatz cultural event from which there is no possible escape. Endless fouls, TOs, three point shots. Give me the old Dean Smith four corners when they flipped the score up on cardboard cards and it was 10-8 at halftime. I still remember the old joke about who is the only person that could hold Michael Jordan under 12 pts per game? Dean Smith.

Mostly I agree with your thoughts. I like to watch the individual athletes for their skills.
I loved watching my children play sports through High School and college (soccer, lacrosse and basketball) and now I'm waiting for my grandchildren to grow up.
I never thought of sports as business when I was growing up but now its all about the money! Still there are some fantastic talents out there worth watching and envying.

I sat thru some of those Dean Smith 4 corner offense nightmares while a student at Maryland. Pure torture. Chris

Yes, I think that was his intent. I'm not sure to this day if he was a genius or an idiot as UNC had the better team about 99% of the time. I seem to recall him pulling this on Patrick Ewing's Georgetown team. It was maddening. Every possession became life and death when you barely ever touched the ball. It must have driven his own players crazy as well given the talent level.

I watched Maryland and South Carolina 4-3 at the half! Maryland won 22-21.

That was a classic. Jim O'Brien was my hero. Terps scored 6 points in the last 14 seconds to upset SC. Game took place in January, 1971, the year I started at UMd. Lefty and that team were the best. -- Al

My bracket is a mess. There are so many teams in this year's tournament that I have no idea what to do with.

Buffalo is a great example, they are 6 seed but I have not seen them play nor have I heard of half of the teams that they did play?

He certainly made the team go Al. I watched the game on DVD a couple of yrs ago. One thing stood out, O'Brian could not hit a free throw. Make a couple of those and we wouldn't have had the historic finish. :smile2: Chris

Chris, O'Brien (who everyone nicknamed Bozo because of that frizzy red hair) was a true character. Was and will always remain mt favorite Terp b-ball player. Had Tommy McMillen in a couple of my basic classes. He was very tall. I sat right behind the NC bench, actually within reach of Mitch Kupchak, the night O'Brien scored 38 points to help defeat the Tarheels. We were screaming at the NC players the whole game but they never payed us any attention. Kupchak was another big boy. O'Brien couldn't miss that night. Great win. -- Al

Disappointing end for the Johnnies. Could have been a better year.
