2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

Certainly shaping up that way. Just wait until that 100 win team gets knocked out by an 86 win WC team in the brilliant 1 game format that MLB has.:rolleyes2: -- Al

That's what I'm afraid of . . .:rolleyes2: It's a dumb system, as is the divisional format. Having the teams play every other team in their division 18 times, and everyone else only 6 or 7 times is completely unfair to the teams in strong divisions, as is having a 100+ win "wildcard team" not having home field advantage against an 86 win "division champion." Every team should play every other team in its conference the same amount of times, with maybe two games against each team in the other conference. Then 5 best teams in each conference make the playoffs, with the playoff teams in each conference ceded 1-5 strictly on wins, with the last two playoff teams in each conference (the 4th and 5th cedes) having a one game playoff. Then 1 plays the winner of the 4-5 game, and 2 plays 3, etc. This would be completely fair, and eliminate ridiculous situations where the 2nd best team in major league baseball is eliminated because it uses up its best pitchers in a 4 game series at the end of the regular season to determine the division winner, then plays a rested 86 win team's ace.

Makes great sense.

So MLB will never go for it.

And for the love of Christ can they ****can the stupid interleague play, that's another tire fire; it's unfair as every year, you play different teams from the other league based on rotation and if you end up playing teams from a strong division while a rival for a playoff position in another division plays a weaksauce division, that stinks.

Not to mention the "natural rivals" series; the MFY's get the Mets while we get the Braves.

Stoopid.

I think the playoff system is fine and works the way it's supposed to, with the division championship being important. The same arguments came up in 2015 in the NL Central División with the Cards, Cubs and Pirates each having 98 or more wins. When the Pirates were eliminated by the Cubs, and the Pirates were asked if this was unfair to them, they said, no, we just need to finish first next time.

As far as interleague games, you have them because you have 15 teams in each league. The only way to avoid them is via expansion.

This has happened before the current system. The Twins and Cardinals won the WS with a low number of regular seasons wins.

Astros pitching has been pretty good lately...
but their bats are cutting loose...

10-0 in their last 10 games...
and have scored 74 runs in these games...

went through a tough run with the Boston and the Yankees...
but who doesn't...

need some separation from Seattle...
hope to see Boston take the next 2 against them and then the Yankees sweep them...

Fun with numbers: The Nats have been involved in five 2-0 games this season. All have been pitched by Max Scherzer. He is 3-2 in those 5 games. Today, he suffered his second consecutive 2-0 loss. Both losses were on a 2-run homer.
Nats have now been shutout 4 times in their last 12 games (5 times on the season). This offense just sucks right now. Extremely frustrating. No one on this team is hitting squat, just sputtering along... -- Al

On the upside for the O's, they are a game ahead of the 1988 team. The 1988 team was 18-49 at this point while the current version is 19-48. Baby steps...:rolleyes2: -- Al
And so it goes. The O's now have the same 19-50 record after 69 games that the 1988 O's had. They currently have a 9 game losing streak and are 2-16 over their last 18 games. Starting with collapse in September last year, the O's have gone 23-69 over their last 92 games. Doesn't get much worse. -- Al

The Giants downward spiral continues despite the return of Bumgarner who is now 0-1 with a 4.76. It doesn't help that the Dodgers are currently playing great baseball and have moved to within 1.5 games of first place Arizona.

UGH!

A minor miracle for the O's...They won their 20th game of the season, finally. Sure, maybe it would mean more if this was April, but we take what we can get. O's now 20-50. -- Al

Al:

It seems like just yesterday they were playing the Blue Jays in that memorable extra-inning wild card game.

Jason, it still feels like yesterday, to me, when the O's swept the Dodgers for the title.{eek3} I am getting so old.:wink2: -- Al

I know we haven't even gotten to the halfway mark...
but can someone please explain the MLB playoff format to me...

how many wild cards are taken from each league...2?

are they the 4th and 5th best records in that league?

do the wild cards play each other to advance?

You have it right. 2 WC from each league, which have the best records of the non-division winners. In theory, you can have 3 teams from a single division in the playoffs, the division winner and 2 WC teams, if they have the best records remaining. The 2 WC teams then play each other in a one-and-done playoff to leave 4 teams, the 3 division winners and the surviving WC team. -- Al

The WC team with the best record hosts the WC game.

The two WC system was instituted because under the old system with one WC, if the WC had a record close to the division leader, neither would play hard since both were going to the playoffs and the WC had only one less playoff game than the division winner. This happened with the Red Sox and Yankees.

MLB decided they wanted to make the division relevant again so the new system was established and it had the desired effect because no team wants to be in a winner take all format, if they can help it.

ty Al...ty Brad...

for years the Astro's have been blocked out on my cable due to Galveston's proximity to Houston...

you had to buy the premium MLB network channel to watch them...

which I didn't...

everybody in Houston and the surrounding area screamed and hollered so much...

that Direct TV finally got the channel and offered it free this now...

this is the first time I have been able to watch baseball (Astros) and I'm really enjoying it...

almost every night I know I can find 3 hours of something to watch on tv...

For years we had Dish Satellite and then one year they decided not to carry the Mets or the Yankees channels anymore. I switched to Directv and that took care of the problem. Later my son became an Angels fan so I bought the MLB package. Best move ever. We can watch all the games and sometimes I like to see how other teams are doing, be it the Cards, Cubs, Dodgers or Giants.

Brad...

next year when you renew your Direct TV MLB Package...or NFL package...tell them it is too expensive...that you are thinking of dropping it...and then ask for the retention center if they don't offer it...I bet they will cut you a great deal on the price...

I got the NFL package about 5-6 years ago...it was $399 back then...then the first game I watched was not even in high definition...it looked all blurry to me...EVEN THOUGH I HAD A HIGH DEFINITION RECEIVER...and all my high definition channels looked perfect......so I called them and they said it was an extra $100 to get the NFL in high definition...even though i had a high definition receiver...so I payed it...

the next year I paid the $399...they did not charge me for the high definition...

the next year I told them it was too expensive...they directed my call to the retention center...
the guy tried to talk me into it...I said no...
so he asked would you get it for $300...I said no....
then he asked would I get it for $200...
I was tempted...but wanting to see where this was going...I said no...
then he said would you get it for $100...I said yes...

so for a couple of years it was $100...

last year I asked for the retention center...and told them I didn't want to renew...hoping they would offer me the same deal...

better than that...they gave it to me for free...no charge...zero...

the only catch was that my contract to stay with Direct TV renewed for another 2 years...

which didn't bother me as I have been with them for 12 years...which they remind me of every time I call...and I think it's the best company in town...

true story...

next year...ask for the retention center before you renew...

Michael, thanks. I may try that with the NFL package as we have that too.
