2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Sure hope the Nats wake up sometime soon. They are 8-12 in June, have gone from a 1st place tie to 3rd place, have been shutout 5 times, are averaging only 3.9 RPG, and have had only 2 wins from the starting staff. Rough month for a supposed contender. -- Al
Should have waited until after tonight's game to post this. Nats got shellacked 11-0 by the Rays, on 2 whole hits. Now 8-13 with 6 shutouts on the month. Just gets better and better. This team looks completely lost in all aspects of the game right now. That rookie manager better straighten this crap out. -- Al

The Nats offense has just completely collapsed. Lost again to the Rays today, shutout 1-0 on 3 hits. They have been shutout 7 times in June while going 8-14. Just incredible. To top it off, it was the 3rd time in his last 4 starts that Max Scherzer has been shutout. He has lost 2-0, 2-0, 1-0, and has a ND. I'll sure be glad when this month is over. Nats are currently also-rans in a division they were expected to win. -- Al

Al:

It might not be much consolation, but it is better to have that type of month now than later. A couple of years ago the Giants were unbeatable until they had one bad month after the all-star break. They never recovered as there was no time left to make up the lost ground.

Jason, I suppose so but I have been telling myself all season that it is still early, that there is plenty of time for them to get a grip. It is no longer early, almost half-way, and the Nats still have shown no sign of being the team they were predicted to be. I might have to face the fact that they are who they appear to be, an inconsistent, slightly better than .500 team. With their present hitting and SP struggles, they certainly aren't division winners, or even playoff material. Still time to wake up, but it looks more and more like it's just going to be 'one of those years' of unfulfilled potential that Nats fans have been dealing with since 2012. -- Al

showed a cool stat for Astro's fans today during the game...

Highest Run Differential in First Half (81 games) of Season...

1939 Yankees +230
1937 Yankees + 200
1944 St. Louis + 182
2018 Astros + 173
1932 Yankees +170

through 1932-1939 Yankees had Babe Ruth...Lou Gehrig...Bill Dickey...Joe DiMaggio...lots of legends...

Keuchel gave up 5 in the first inning but they clawed their way back in and won 7-6 off a 2 run home run in the 9th by Bregman...

As I have said before, in the Bay Area you are either an A's fan or a Giants fan. While I do not have anything against Oakland I simply do not follow them.

However a quick tip of the cap is in order as the A's currently have a 42-38 record versus the Giants at 41-39. It was worth noting that the Giants have the second highest payroll in MLB at $$221,020,477 while the A's are second to last at $83,225,823.

The O's have been chasing the infamous 1988 Orioles all season and with last night's loss to Seattle, they have finally done it. At the 79 game mark, the 2018 O's are 23-56, now one game behind the 1988 O's mark of 24-55. The '88 O's started with the famous 21 game losing streak, finishing the year 54-107. The current O's have been skidding downwards all season and have finally fallen behind the '88 team in futility. The '88 O's went 30-52 from this point on, but with their continuing downwards trend, it will be a struggle for the current team to match this record. If they don't win at least the 31 games needed to tie the '88 teams final record, the 2018 O's will be proud owners of the worst record by an Orioles team since the move from St. Louis in 1954. The franchise history goes back to 1901 and in all those years, only 2 teams, the 1937 St. Louis Browns with 108 losses, and the 1939 Browns with 111 losses, have exceeded the 1988 O's 107 losses. We could be watching history being made. Oh joy.:rolleyes2: -- Al
P.S. - The 1988 O's finished 34.5 games back. The 2018 O's are currently 30 games back. More history?

Jason, evidently the popular choice in the Bay Area is for SF, and by a wide margin. I see the Giants are averaging 38,581 fans a game, 92% capacity. The poor Athletics are averaging 15,500 fans @ 44.2% capacity. That's a huge difference. -- Al

Al:

I am not bragging on my favorite team but AT&T Park is the most beautiful ballpark I have ever been to. From the sight-lines to the food and the setting itself no other stadium that I have visited comes close.

Jason, are you saying it is a better stadium than the fabled Candlestick? If memory serves me correctly, I believe Stu Miller, a relief pitcher for SF (and later for the O's), was blown off balance in the middle of his windup by a windgust at Candlestick, way back in the 60's. -- Al

Al:

Hahahahahahahahaha, it has been a long day and I truly needed a laugh!

The best I can say is that Candlestick had its charms. You are correct about Stu Miller too. He was a reliever for the Giants and that infamous moment happened in the 1961 All-Star game. As the saying now goes he eventually got the win, along with a (literally) blown save.

Rumors are flying that the LA Dodgers have the inside track on obtaining the O's Manny Machado. As a long time Giants fan I can only hope this doesn't come to pass. Can't see Manny in Dodger Blue. I still haven't recovered from seeing SF HoFer Juan Marichal in Dodger Blue for the final 2 games of his illustrious career back in 1975. Manny, say 'NO!' to a Dodger deal. -- Al

Mets appear to be searching for a new GM. Sandy Alderson’s cancer has reappeared and he has taken a leave of absence. He also indicated that, on the merits, he was not entitled to return. The temporary GM is John Ricco, who said today that the Mets will be sellers and that “they’re open for business.” No one is untouchable.

They will carry out a GM search at the end of the season as no team will give permission for the Mets to talk to one of their people during the season.

Al:

Now that would hurt!!!! The Giants have tried keeping up with the Dodgers from a payroll and player standpoint but I think the signing of Machado would put an end to that "cold war".

In recent memory it was tough to see Brian Wilson go to the Dodgers after being such an integral part of the Giants World Series runs. I wished him well when he left but seeing him in blue never felt right.

If no one is untouchable, I would expect the offers on DeGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, and Matz to come pouring in. That's a heck of a good starting rotation and should be kept as a base for rebuilding, if that's what the Mets are going to do. Problem is they are the players that will bring the best returns for the Mets. -- Al

Hopefully they can hang onto a couple of those arms and build from there.

I am currently listening to the San Francisco/Arizona game. Thank goodness for the retractable roof at Chase Field. According to the broadcast, in downtown Phoenix the sunset at 7:42 pm and the current outside temperature is 98 degrees.

June 30th, and the Yankees and Red Sox remain in a flat-footed tie for the Division and the best record in baseball. Absent injuries or blockbuster trades, this is going to be the most exciting season since 1978, and, again, will come down to the last series in Boston.^&cool

At present, it looks like the 2 wildcard teams could both be 100+ game winners, which will certainly bring on the hand-wringing as one of them will lose the one-game WC contest. Gonna be fun. -- Al

yes...
Seattle and Houston are in a tight race to win the West...
Houston...with Correa now on the DL for ten days...
coupled with both Springer and Gurriel getting days off...
I hardly recognized the line up in yesterday's game...
several lesser used players on the field...
which they lost...
