2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Looking like the NYY's are going to have to focus on the Wildcard. Boston now up by 8.5 games and I don't think Bucky Dent is coming out of retirement. :wink2: -- Al

Looks like a payback for 1978. Listening to the radio, Yankee fans are ready to jump off the bridge and complaining about Giraldi’s firing.

Oakland is an interesting team to follow...they are on a tear right now...blowing past Seattle in the last few weeks for 2nd place in the AL West...winning their last 5 games and will face the Mariners and the Astros well over a dozen times in the remaining schedule...that's gonna end up a tight race for division winner and the remaining wild card...Oakland is my dark horse a very scary team...the only team to win both series against Boston this year...

If the Nats didn't know it before, they are learning how hard it is to make up ground when you are chasing teams for the playoffs. The Nats are 7-3 in their last 10 games and have made up exactly 1 (ONE) game on Philly and Atlanta in that time. There is not enough games or time to catch them at that rate. -- Al

There is no doubt that the Sox are the story of 2018.

However, in a different way what Oakland is doing is just as amazing. They have a payroll of just over $76 mil. Contrast that with Boston where David Price's contract alone is $217 mil or the Yankees where Stanton's deal is worth $325 mil. Heck, even Seattle who they A's are fighting for a wildcard spot has Cano and his $240 mil contract.

Jason...
I found your numbers impossible to believe...
until I looked them up...
but they are correct...
which makes Oakland's success even more impressive...

I'm just starting to really get involved in baseball after a 20-30 year layoff...

for the 2018 luxury tax imposed on team's payroll in excess of $197 million...
the only two teams that surpass that are Boston and San Fran...

what amount are they taxed on?
and how is it distributed?
do the lesser payroll teams actually receive some of the tax that is collected?

Mike:

From MLB.com:

On December 2nd in each contract year the Commissioner's Office notifies every team that exceeded the tax threshold that they must pay their tax by January 21st of the following calendar year. The Commissioner's Office then redistributes this money in a standard manner. The first $13 million will be used to defray clubs' funding obligations under the MLB Players Benefits Agreements. Of the remaining sum, 50% of the remaining proceeds collected for each Contract Year, with accrued interest, will be used to fund player compensation as described in the MLB Players Benefits Plan Agreements and the other 50% shall be distributed to clubs that did not exceed the Base Tax Threshold in that Contract Year.

more bad luck for the Astros...

George Springer (sprained thumb) was again placed on the 10 day disabled list last night...
Springer had just gotten off the DL and played in only 2 games before he left the game last night...

Lance McCullers left Saturday's game after 60 pitches complaining of elbow soreness...
has been sent back to Houston for further evaluation...

Jose Altuve (right knee soreness) was sent back to Houston for further examination...
with Hinch saying it "feels like" a setback in the sense that Altuve will not come off the DL when he is eligible this week...

Carlos Correa...who was supposed to be back on the field after the All-Star game...is still on the DL...they need him back asap...

too many injuries to the starters...

Oakland/Seattle may catch and pass them soon...

Jason...

thank you...
I was still researching it...
without luck...
when you posted this....

so the teams with the lower/lowest payrolls...
actually get compensated...
by the luxury tax collected from the teams that exceed $197 million...

there is so much I don't know about baseball...
thanks for indulging me...

They should be healthy by the time the playoffs start. Besides, Seattle is playing mediocre at best and I am not sure the A's can keep up the pace they are setting.

Honestly, I think the Yankees are the team that is in trouble when I comes to the Wild-Card.

Happy to help on that one. I had to look it up a few weeks ago myself so it was an easy find.

yea...NY is now 5-10 in their last 15 games...with Judge out of the line up...that's a big offensive weapon gone missing...he can change a game with one swing of the bat...not taking away from Boston...but Boston caught them at the right time...we all know...when playoffs come...it's usually the team that's healthy and on a roll that wins...NY will be okay...

The Yankees’ malaise goes deeper than that. Counting tonight, where the win looks probable, they are 19-20 in their last 39. Severino has not pitched particularly well for awhile, Sonny Gray has been moved to the bullpen and Chapman has looked poor lately. Torres seems to have some maturity issues and there are some definite holes in their lineup. Judge may not be back until September so they are going to have make up production elsewhere until then. They also have not beaten on a consistent basis the teams they should be beating.

They are not clearly catching the Red Sox as things stand and they need to worry about making the playoffs for starters.

They have a lot of work to do.

with all that said...
they had an easy win tonight and still have the 3rd best record in the AL...
I don't think Seattle is gonna grab that last spot...

once you make the playoffs...
it's just like any other sport...
whoever gets on a hot streak can win consistently and create upsets......

They should beat up on the bad teams. It’s also misleading to focus on “the third best record,” because that doesn’t give a true indication of how they are playing lately. As the old refrain goes, it’s not who you play but when you play them.

it's official now...

starter Lance McCullers Jr. has a strain in his right forearm...
and manager A.J. Hinch said the right-hander is unlikely to return before September...

The Astros have four other prominent players on the disabled list...
but shortstop Carlos Correa...
second baseman Jose Altuve...
outfielder George Springer...
and catcher Brian McCann are all expected to return before the end of the month...

Great job by the "socially aware" Giants fans. A couple of weeks ago they mercilessly booed Josh Hader as he entered the game following the revelation that he had tweeted out offensive comments when he was 17. Then last night I did not hear one single boo as Roberto Osuna entered the game to pitch for the first time since coming off of a 75 game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse policy.

Well done Giants fans!

I was really bummed to see them pick him up...

As long as they are playing the Giants I think they will be ok, ^&grin
