2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

O's and Red Sox are engaged in a real pitcher's duel.:rolleyes2: Boston leads 11-10 after 6. Really one of the poorer played games I've seen this year. O's have walked 8, Sox have given up 14 hits. Looks like the A-team pitchers took the night off. -- Al

O's ended up scoring 12 runs...and still lost by 7, 19-12. Only took 4 hours, too. {sm3} -- Al

That score reminds of some of the Mets game in the mid 60s. This was when there weren’t that many games on TV, maybe just weekend games, and the Mets were pretty bad, the so called loveable losers.

They couldn’t score a lick, almost as if it was a sin to score more than three runs. You’d come home from school and run into the house to listen to the news and the radio announcer would do his 30 seconds sports wrap up and say something like “Good news, folks. The Mets scored six runs today. The bad news is that they gave up eight runs and lost.”

There weren’t many happy recaps from the Mets legendary play by play announcer, the late Bob Murphey, who, after a Mets win, would say “Back with the happy recap.”

Thank God only 46 games left if my counting is right for my O's....I know the rebuild is going to more losing seasons but hopefully nothing like this season's train wreck.

Amen to that. With 46 games left, the O's need to go 20-26 to avoid the worst record in club history. It's reasonable at this point to assume that the O's will avoid the Mets record of futility (40 wins in '62) because with 35 wins at present, the O's need win only 6 more games this season to avoid that dubious record, but I believe that they will set the record for the worst O's team ever. Can't see them winning 20 more games this year. -- Al

O's officially eliminated from the AL East title race with last night's loss (Aug. 10), the earliest this has happened in MLB history since going to the division format. Beat the old record by 6 days. They also tied the record for being eliminated from the title race at the earliest date ever, regardless of format. A banner year in B-more. -- Al

Not sure on those 6 wins Al, tough sledding from here on out,
But agree they should be able to scratch out at least 6 wins or a few more, they may not be the woeful Mets record but going to give a runners up record for sure!!!

The Giants win last night keeps them in the fight but somehow I feel like they are doing nothing more than prolonging the inevitable.

As long as there is a pulse, there is hope. At least that is my motto with the Nats.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

The Giants lose on Barry Bond's number retirement night, 4-0 to the Pirates. Pretty ironic considering the Giants did not win the Workd Series until he was off the roster and most of the Pirates' franchise would rather forget that he ever played for them.

Not much of a change for the Giants after their weekend split with the Pirates. They picked up .5 game in the division race and are now 6 games back. They remain 7 games out of the Wild-Card.

Great match-up tonight with Bumgarner going against Kershaw even if both pitchers are .500 at 4-4 and 5-5 respectively.

Jason...
I don't put a lot of stock in a win/loss records...
I don't think they are truly indicative of a pitcher's value...
I think the ERA and the WHIP are a much better value measurement...
the win/loss is effected by runs scored that night...
probably some great pitchers with bad win/loss records...
probably some not so good pitchers who started when the team's bats were hot that night too...

Mike:

Great points. deGrom is probably the best example of that, in 2018 he is 6-7, with a 1.81 ERA a .965 WHIP and 195 SO strikeouts.

Break up the Mets!

They’ve won two series in a row and beat the Yankees tonight as the deGrominator evened his record at 7-7.

Onto to the Os.

Jason...
that is a perfect example...
I be it wouldn't be hard to find a good won/loss record with a high ERA and WHIP too...

Astros are absolutely reeling right now...

Correa finally came back...
but...
Altuve...Springer...Marisnek...McCann...Devinski and McCullers are all out on DL...

down to a 4 man rotation...

guys are playing I have never seen before...

thank God Oakland and Seattle are playing a series right now...
one of them has to lose...

they need to get healthy quick...

Things have gotten really ugly with the Nats as bullpen problems have gone from bad to worse and are now sabotaging any chance/hope the Nats had of staying in the NL East race. Both Nats closers are on the DL and with the recent trade of 2 bullpen RHP's, the pen is in complete disarray, with NO ONE capable of closing out a game, or even competent enough to hold a lead. The Nats have suffered 2 disasterous 1-run walk-off losses in a row, one to the Cubs and one to the Cards. The losses have torn the heart out of the fan-base and have to have had the same effect on the team. The pen has given up 9 runs in their last 5.1 innings over the last 2 losses and the team now stands at a horrible 11-21 in 1-run games, always an indicator of a club's ability in close games. Nats are now back to 1 game over .500, and with 43 games left, would have to go 30-13 just to reach 90 wins, certainly no guarantee of even a WC spot at this point. Boy, this season just couldn't get much more disappointing for the Nats. Still, as long as there is a pulse, as long as the numbers still are possible... -- Al
