2018 Baseball season (1 Viewer)

Things have gotten really ugly with the Nats as bullpen problems have gone from bad to worse and are now sabotaging any chance/hope the Nats had of staying in the NL East race. Both Nats closers are on the DL and with the recent trade of 2 bullpen RHP's, the pen is in complete disarray, with NO ONE capable of closing out a game, or even competent enough to hold a lead. The Nats have suffered 2 disasterous 1-run walk-off losses in a row, one to the Cubs and one to the Cards. The losses have torn the heart out of the fan-base and have to have had the same effect on the team. The pen has given up 9 runs in their last 5.1 innings over the last 2 losses and the team now stands at a horrible 11-21 in 1-run games, always an indicator of a club's ability in close games. Nats are now back to 1 game over .500, and with 43 games left, would have to go 30-13 just to reach 90 wins, certainly no guarantee of even a WC spot at this point. Boy, this season just couldn't get much more disappointing for the Nats. Still, as long as there is a pulse, as long as the numbers still are possible... -- Al

Al:

I am taking your advice and hanging in with the Giants as long as they have a pulse. They beat the Dodgers last night and are winning 1-0 in the 6th inning tonight.

Nats lost again to fall to .500, 60-60. I'm so proud. They are .500 since the All-Star game, despite all the lip service about how each game is important in this stretch of the season. The team has no fire, no leadership (on the field or in the dugout), and while they haven't quit or thrown in the towel, they just don't have what it takes to go on the necessary run. They haven't even won as many as 4 games in a row since May. The countdown to elimination keeps getting shorter.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Giants got to the LA pen again and won a close game 2-1. This series has been a rollercoaster all season although the Giants are on a streak right now, having taken 3 straight in Dodgertown. Classsic baseball series, but I wish I could stay up long enough to watch them all. The time difference between the coasts makes it hard for me. Anyway, hope the Giants complete the sweep tonight. It would also give them the season series. ^&cool -- Al

Astros need to heed the words of the poet Satchel Paige:

Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you.

Looking forward to tonight's game, it is on ESPN.

Mets are having a big day against the Os, 14-1. After three losses to the Os, it’s about time but they need to save some of those runs for the Phillies.

Until tonight, the O's had been having a well pitched series against the Mets. The Mets have scored 14 runs tonight, which is more than the 13 runs the 2 teams had scored combined in the previous 3 games. May as well lose big, eh? -- Al

3 losses???? That's almost half the total season wins for the O's!!! :)

Sammy, if the O's could only play the NY teams, we would be in good shape. O's are 6-6 against the NYY's and 3-1 against the Mets. That's a full 25% of their wins this season. :rolleyes2: -- Al

You guys found your level tonight. Your bullpen isn't one of the worst in the AL for nothing.

Changing my mind on the Nats not having quit. They are playing like a team in collapse. Starting with that gut-wrenching loss on Sunday to the Cubs, the Nats have now lost their last 4 games (7 of their last 8), are again under .500, and continue to lose close games (3 by 1-run and 3 by 2-runs). They simply look like a defeated team at this point. -- Al

Yep, the O's traded their major bullpen elements during the trading blitz and had no one ready to take over. So it goes. -- Al

Good article. Makes me wonder if the ability of pitchers is approaching the point where hitters will no longer be able to adjust adequately. I smell another possible 'hitter friendly' change in rules in the wind. -- Al

Getting rid of the shift would make a difference.

Acuña of the Braves got drilled on the first play of yesterday's game of the Braves Marlins game and Keith Hernandez discussed it on the Mets telecast, saying that sometimes hitters get too comfortable and need to be hit. He received a lot of criticism for his comments. See http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...ernandez-acuna-old-school-20180816-story.html

People forget how this game is supposed to be played. If you want to see constant offense, just get rid of the pitcher and have HR derby.

In the 'old days' it was SoP to pop a hot hitter. Can't allow the hitter to be comfortable with no worry at the plate. It's just baseball. And I agree about the shifts. I hate them. -- Al

I’m sorry but that is utter BS. Acuna wasn’t showboating, he wasn’t mouthing off, he was just a hot hitter. To go after him with a 97 mile hr, four seam fastball with the apparent intention of injuring him, perhaps ending his season or even career, that’s how baseball is supposed to be played? Seriously? If so I must not understand the sport despite having played it thru small college.
The Marlins were *****ed because the Braves had been stomping their crap team and responded like immature whiny brats. If you can’t get a guy out, and your response is to throw at him with malign intent, you have the emotional level of a 12 year old with a cannon arm.
Let’s see how Urenas defenders like it the next time he gets to bat against the Braves and they go for his knees or his head as payback. That’s baseball, huh?
Hernandez is just defending his thug buddy Mattingly, who’s having a disastrous turn as manager of the woeful Marlins. Maybe the Braves will just settle for another *** Whooping sweep next time, as they did this 4 game series, rather than getting into the gutter with Donnie’s dregs. If so I salute their professionalism.

So there’s no middle ground between HR derby and thug ball? Wow.

He could have backed him off the plate instead of hitting him. However, you still can’t let batters get too comfortable at the plate. Otherwise, why have a pitcher. I completely understand your position as an Atlanta fan.
