2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

I think the last 5 games really sum up the Giants season. They looked great against the Dodgers, scoring 10 runs while taking 2 games out of 3 but then in 2 games against the Reds they have only scored 2 runs, losing both games?

You can blame injuries all you want but I tend to think that inconsistency has been the problem for the 2018 Giants.

Mirrors the Nats to a scary degree, as we have discussed before. Injuries damaged our team greatly, but it was the inconsistency that has done them in. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Nats have been unable to win more than 3 games in a row since May and are thus incapable of putting the necessary run together to get back in the race. -- Al

O's got beaten again today, 8-0. No big news there. They are now 37-87 on the year. With 38 games left, it is safe to say the Mets 1962 record is safe, but that the O's record for worst team, the 1988 O's @ 54-107, is under severe threat. O's must go 19-19 to avoid losing 107 or more games. Hardly likely, so it is safe to say that the 2018 O's will soon be proud owners of the worst record in team history. Even a heady 17-21 record will give them the trophy. Looking like even a 50 win season might be beyond them. I'm betting 50-112 for their final mark, based on their 9-17 record since Machado and everyone else got traded. O's have also scored 2 or fewer runs in 48 of their games and are 4-44 in those games and are 8-61 in games where they score 3 or fewer runs. Obviously. the 4 run thresh hold is the key, as holds true for all of baseball. O's are 29-26 when scoring 4 or more, which should have been doable with the bats they had. It all went horribly wrong. Well, as some wise man once said, there's always next year... -- Al

Al:

The Giants lost again today and I think I am facing the fact that 2018 is over for them. There's always next year is my new mantra as well.

the Astros finally won a game today...they managed to stay 1 game ahead of the streaking A's after losing the series...the Astros are 3-7 in their last 10...while injuries have hurt them...going with a 4 man rotation (McCullers on the DL still) and several key players on the DL have really hurt them...but their starting to return...so good news for them........Correa and Springer finally did come back this week...and while neither has done anything amazing on offense...their defense and camaraderie is invaluable...Springer's presence in the dugout and game just seems to spark the entire team...he brings electricity to his team mates...as does Altuve's attendance...who is reported to be back on the field sometime in the next series...

Houston's starting pitchers are flattening out...where Verlander...Cole...Morton and McCullers were ranked extremely high on the list of pitchers in the AL a month ago with their low ERA's...all their impressive stats have declined...Verlander himself has given up 14 home runs in his last 7 starts...giving up 4 runs today in 5 1/3 innings...

this will be a back and forth battle with Oakland to win the division...Oakland was one of the most underrated teams in the Al just a month or two ago...they have won 40 of their last 53 games...red hot batting and pitching...I have gotten to watch them in 4 series now...and they are a really good team...not as offensively intimidating as Boston and the Yankees...but a well rounded line up of batters with power...I think the best thing they have is their relief pitching...when they have the lead in the 6th or 7th inning and they hand it off to the relief pitchers...they are hard to score on...

Cleveland...Oakland and Houston have several more series against each other this year...the AL West should be fun to watch the remaining season and will probably go down to the wire for winner and wild card...

With the Giants all but out of it, I have started to pay closer attention to other teams in the league. I think the AL West is the most compelling race with the A's, Astro's and Mariners set to play each other a few more times. As an added bonus I can watch A's games on TV when I am in Cali and Astros games on TV while I am in Texas.

Jason...that's true...can't see Minnesota catching Cleveland being 12 games out...or the Yankees giving Boston a scare...the West is the only race left in the AL...I'm just hoping Cleveland and the A's can cancel each other out by splitting whats left in their match ups...

Somehow I still think that the Astros will win the West.

Mets finished off an 11 game road trip in stirling fashion, beating the Phillies at Williamsport and finishing the trip at 7-4.

I watched the Williamsport game last night. It seemed like the players really enjoyed themselves as they played in the Little League stadium etc.

I missed the game as we’re on vacation but was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. After a disastrous June, the played 500 ball in July and are one over 500 so far in August.

Brad:

A tip of the cap goes out to Syndergaard, deGrom, Wheeler and Matz. They sat in the stands and watched the game with the Little Leaguers.

Fun with numbers: The Giants have a very peculiar pattern working since the All-Star break. Their extra-inning games are coming in pairs, as in back-to-back. Three times, so far, and with last nights extra-inning win over the Mets, it means they will play another extra-inning game tonight (and, according to the pattern, win it as well) if the pattern holds. If they do go to extras tonight, that will make 4 pairs since the break. The Giants lost the first pair, won the second pair, lost the third pair, and won the first half of the 4th pair (if in fact it does happen). The Giants have played a lot of extra-inning games this season, 17, and are 10-7 in those games. That's a lot of extra baseball. -- Al

Matt Adams to the Cards. Guess the Nats are waving the white flag. A disappointing season for Nats fans.

The Giants might be waving the white flag too. McCutchen has reportedly been placed on waivers, with the hope that it leads to trade.

It's what I figured. The devastating walk-off loss to the Cubs two Sundays ago broke their backs. They have played like a defeated team since then. The break-up was inevitable once the Nats lost this last series to the Marlins. Disappointing is an understatement but there it is. On to 2019. -- Al

Will Martinez survive the purge?
