Will Martinez survive the purge?

-Jason
Jason, it's hard to say. As watchers of the Nats know, managers come and go like a merry-go-round in this town. I'm of the mind he will stay, but the usual support from the front office is still present and supportive, which is usually the death knell. He seems popular with the players, yet leadership seems a problem. As I say, I think he stays, but I'm no better than 50/50 on that. -- Al

Al:

Thanks for the local info.

In the Bay Area Bochy seems to be safe as he still has past World Series capital saved up. More focus seems to be on the front office and how they created the second highest payroll in MLB without a true superstar.

I would think Bochy's WS titles would be worth a few down seasons,if necessary, but we all know how fickle we fans can be. :wink2: -- Al

The Nats talk show was all over this today. The deal was never close to being made. -- Al

They should try to get a deal done with a contender. I doubt he’s returning to the Nats next year and what are you going to have to show for it?

That's been an ongoing concern down here all season. To trade or not to trade. I don't see the Lerners springing for the money it is going to take to keep him. In all honesty, the Nats are pretty well set in the outfield without Harper. Many believe they should take the money and sign infielders Rendon and Turner to long-term contracts instead of attempting to sign Harper. I'd hate to see Harper go, but I'd really hate to see Rendon and Turner leave. We shall see. -- Al

If it wasn't over for the Giants it is now. It looks like Posey will be having season-ending hip surgery.

Join the club ^&grin Even though it’s been over for awhile for the Mets, you savor the wins. Had it none been for a 5-21 June, the season might have been a little less frustrating.

Not to pile on but at least the Giants hung in for a while. I feel bad for Al and Sammy, the O's were out of it in June.

Jason, it has been a down year for our teams, but that is the game. Nats have basically waved the white flag, but management apparently forgot to tell the players who just walked off the Phillies with Ryan Zimmerman's 11th career walk-off Hr and beaten them for the second straight night with Mad Max going in the finale tomorrow. Nats ain't dead yet, even if it's just smoke and mirrors. -- Al

June?????....more like March!!!! :)
It's just unbelievable. The O's hit 90 losses today, with only 37 wins. O's need to go 18-17 over the last 35 games to avoid the 'worst O's team ever' title. I don't see how they can do it. Based on they're winning percentage since the fire sale, I don't think they can reach 50 wins. I think they may be looking at 115 losses at their current rate. -- Al

Interesting fact:The Nats Ryan Zimmerman is tied with David Ortiz and Tony Perez for most walk-off Hr's in MLB history with 11. -- Al

This 'fact' is incorrect. My source was wrong. Jim Thome has the most walk-off Hr's with 13. There are 6 players with 12; Foxx, Mantle, Musial, Pujols, Robinson, and Ruth. Then come Zimm, Ortiz, and Perez with 11. Sorry. -- Al

Latest trade buzz on players who have cleared waivers, https://www.mlb.com/news/august-trade-rumors-and-waiver-claims/c-288987570

McCutcheon may be on the move soon. Wilmer Flores could be on the move; he’s very dependable in big spots and has most walk off hits in Mets history.
Quite interesting. I had heard that several Nats had been put on revocable waivers, but Harper was the only player identified publicly. Nats are cleaning house, as all the players traded (Murphy and Adams) and put on waivers (Harper, Weiters, Reynolds, and Gonzalez) are all FA at the end of the season. I expect only Harper and Reynolds might receive offers. -- Al

It is a little frustrating to hear that McCutchen has cleared waivers and every team interested in him has told the Giants that their asking price is too high.

They are going to lose him anyway and the season is over for them (9 games out in the division). They should take what they can get and move on.

Fun with numbers: The LA Dodgers have the 3rd highest payroll in MLB (for the 25 man roster) at $147,189,448.00 while the Tampa Bay Rays have the lowest in MLB at $23,406,256.00. So what? Both teams have a record of 67-61. More proof that money can't always buy happiness, depending on what division you play in.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Baseball has an odd sense of humor. The NYY's beat the O's tonight, 7-5 in 10 innings. The losing pitcher for the O's was Carroll, who the O's just got from the NYY's in the Zach Britton trade. Now for the funny part...Britton saved the game for NY. Ha-ha. Gotta love baseball. -- Al

Al:

To further prove your point, more fun with numbers (or no fun for me): The Giants have the highest payroll in MLB for their 25 man roster at $152,711,797 while the Oakland A's have the 26th highest at $51,971,216. The Giants are 63-66 while the A's are 77-52. The A's highest paid player is Khris Davis at $10.5 mil, the Giants have 8 players who make more than that. Khris Davis has 39 HRs and 103 RBIs. Buster Posey is the Giants highest paid player at $22 mil and he will finish the season with 5 HRs and 40 RBIs. Ouch.
