2018 Baseball season (2 Viewers)

Great call from the Giant's broadcast last night regarding Bumgarner who was pulled after going 7 innings, giving up 4 hits and 0 earned runs:

"Bumgarner got deGrom'ed tonight............."

All of the sudden the Astros are the Astros again, going 7-1 in their last 8 games against the Mariners, Angels and A’s.

Jason...yea...it's fun to watch again...^&grin...it's hard to spend 3-3 1/2 hours and be disappointed every night...but they are getting healthy now...Altuve...Springer...Correa are all back...Morton went on the DL yesterday...so 2 of their 5 starters are out now...McCullers and Morton...that hurts...but it was fantastic to squeak out a winning series against Oakland tonight and pad their lead a bit...huge series for them...

The National League Wild Card race is getting more and more interesting with 5 teams having a legitimate shot at the 2 spots.

Nats continue to dismantle their bullpen and have traded Madson to the Dodgers for a minor-league pitcher. Buzz is LH starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez isn't going to be far behind, trade wise, but no word to who. -- Al

Even though they are not mathematically eliminated, I think the recent trades show that the Nats and Giants are throwing in the towel on their respective disappointing seasons.

Gonzalez has been traded to the Brewers. No word on what the Nats get in return. I'll get that info at the post-game news conference in a little while. -- Al

The American League won the trade deadline involving former MVP's with McCutchen going to the Yanks and Donaldson to the Indians.

The O's are now 40-97 and have 25 games left to play. The O's are 8 games behind the 1988 O's mark at the same point in the race for 'worst O's team' ever title. It looks like the 2018 O's have a death grip on the title. They would have to win 15 of the final 25 games to exceed the 1988 team's 54 win total and avoid losing more than the 107 game that the '88 team lost. Even 14 wins won't do it because that will give the 2018 team 108 losses and, thus, the title for worst O's team. I have to say, I don't see the O's winning those 15 games. I think even reaching 50 wins is beyond them at this point. Just to further the point, 16 of the final 25 games are against playoff contenders, including 10 games against Houston, the NYY's, and Boston. Oh well... -- Al

Al:

It has been a tough season for the O's. I have only seen them play a few times this year and only once recently. The one thing I will give them credit for is their effort. Players are still trying to leg out infield hits and outfielders are diving to make catches. As a baseball fan it is great to see that kind of hard work, despite the fact that they were eliminated from contention long ago.

Jason, as bad as it has all gone for the O's, a rebuild can be good for the many young players that wouldn't ordinarily get a shot at playing. With so many of the old line gone, new faces are showing up on a regular basis and all of them want a permanent job. The result is a lot of hustle as this is basically an audition for next year's team. Hustle gets you noticed and if the results aren't the best, management will at least remember the enthusiasm and effort. It will take time to put the O's back together as a contender, but it is good to see some of the future talent on display, getting game experience. But my oh my, it has been a long summer. -- Al

Jacob deGrom, ace of the Mets, tied a MLB record the other night with his 25th straight start allowing 3 or fewer runs. His ERA for the season lowered to 1.68, but once again the Mets didn't score for him while he was in the game and he came away with yet another ND, his 12th in 28 starts. His record stands at 8-8. With any run support, he would have won 8 of his ND's and possibly 5 of his losses, which means he could be sitting with a 21-3 record right now. I know, coulda, woulda, shoulda, but it really has been incredible pitching that has not been rewarded in the win column. -- Al

For what it is worth I think he should win the Cy Young. He is nothing short of dominant when it comes to what he can control, his pitching. The fact that he doesn't get any run support should not be held against him.

Going to be a close race between deGrom, Scherzer, and Nola. The stats show little difference between them with the exception of the ERA where deGrom holds the advantage @ 1.68, to Nola's 2.23, and Scherzer's 2.28. Scherzer holds a very slight advantage in IP, Hits allowed, K's,WHIP, and wins but they are all really close. deGrom's win total is his one disadvantage. Going to be a tough call. -- Al

Al:

Great post, proving once again that the never-ending stats are one of the reasons that I love baseball!

why such a light schedule tonight on the MLB schedule...
only 4 games scheduled...
the NFL kicks off tonight on tv...
is that why?

I'm thinking the light schedule was actually a very subtle play by MLB. By playing a light schedule, MLB knew many people would tune in the NFL TNF game, be bored silly by the awful exhibition of football, and return with greater enthusiasm to America's One True Sport...baseball.:wink2:{eek3}^&grin -- Al
