Gents,
Tomorrow 21st of July is Belgian Independence day ( our 4th of July ) The day we also remember fallen soldiers doing their duty from 1830 up to the present day. (Today we stll have soldiers in Afganistan, Lebanon, and the Balkan) To honour the spirit of this forum, I give you a few pics of two TS I painted belonging to the Belgian Brigade Piron,which fought next to the Brits during the Normandy campaign.
They were organized in 3 independent company sized motorised units. The British tasked the Brigade ( 2200 men and 500 vehicles)with the persuit of enemy elements along the Normandy coast.On August the 9th they relieved the 5th British Special Service Brigade( Commando). In front of them the 272nd,711th,346th German Infantry Divisions together with elements of the elite 12th SS Panzer Div.The Brigade liberated the French coastal villages of Cabourg,Houlgate,Villers-sur-Mer,Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur,Pont Audemer,Caudebec, Bolbec and Harfleur.They were then ordered away from Normandy to be the first to enter the city of Brussels, the Belgian capital.

The Belgian Revolution was the conflict which led to the secession of the Southern provinces from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and established an independent Kingdom of Belgium.

Much of the population of the south were Roman Catholic, French-speaking, or liberals who regarded King William I's rule as despotic. There were high levels of unemployment and industrial unrest among the working classes.[citation needed]

On August 25, 1830 riots erupted in Brussels and shops were looted. Theatergoers who had just watched La muette de Portici at the Monnaie theater house, joined the uproar and windows were smashed. Uprisings followed elsewhere in the country. Factories were occupied and machinery destroyed. Order was restored briefly after William committed troops to the Southern Provinces but rioting continued and leadership was seized by more radical elements, who started talking of secession.[citation needed]

A battle took place in Brussels. Cannons were fired in the Warande Park. Dutch troops were eventually forced to withdraw because of mass desertion of recruits from the Southern Provinces, while the States-General in Brussels voted in favour of secession and declared independence. In the aftermath, a National Congress was assembled and William refrained from future military action and appealed to the Great Powers. The resulting London Conference of major European powers recognized Belgian independence. Following the installation of Leopold I as "King of the Belgians" in 1831, King William made a belated military attempt to reconquer Belgium and restore his position through a military campaign. This Ten Days Campaign failed as a result of French military intervention. Not until 1839 did the Dutch accept the decision of the London conference and Belgian independence by signing the Treaty of London.

Nice words and pic's Guy, have a great day tomorrow.

Guy, happy independence day and thanks for the military info, you can't have to much of that can you.

Happy Independence Day Guy,
Thanks so much for the lesson on Belgian history. Having visited from the other side of the world and taken note of the history of 'everyone else' who fought in Belgium, I cannot help but feel a trifle silly. It is a rich history, and the political situation is still not without some very independent challenges, notwithstanding the economic challenges that Europe faces as a whole. Here's wishing you all a bright future. {bravo}}
