those flats with the chairs are very interesting. I've never seen something like that. With he figures being flat, the chairs look like they are an odd proportion. Call me crazy, but I love it

I don't think your crazy Zach...maybe a little, but frankly I prefer the company of the ...Ahhh eccentric!
I suspect on this set which probably date from the 19th century, that the chairs were most likely originally cast flat and bent into shape, now whether that was done by the manufacturer or the buyer I don't know, but your right it's one of those oddities that are real cool! I've picked out another example in the French pontoon Engineers the deployed pontoons. the other set is from the 1870's entitled Battle of Bazeilles 1870 and the Battle Damaged houses were sold as part of the retail set.

Some more flat fun

I've noticed that nice "basket weave" backing material in several of your more recent posts Ray, which can be used behind flats - with slots left for the bases. Looks really nice - and sets the figures off nicely. Could you tell us what it's called, perchance - and where it may be available from? :Djb

JB! How goes it? into your new digs yet?
The back story to these many fine and antique sets you see displayed on this thread is all about one of the greatest collections of Flats in the world and the selling off of same after the owners death. He was a very successful Swiss businessman and a serious passion for flats! I have compiled from several sources that there are nearly 500,000 SETS in the collection and there has never been less than 20 auctions per week posted and it's been going on for over a year if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure the cream of the collection have most likely been sold in private and we'll never see them but just what I've seen... the variety, depth and breadth of whats been auctioned already is staggering and there's no end in site.
So everytime you see those nice sets displayed in the weave pattern display boxes it is part of the collection. I have actually won several sets but they never send the boxes and say soin the auction. makes it difficult for me as I have to come up with all new display cases and storage with every purchase.
Here's several more of those fine boxes! ^&grin

Hey Ray - some more nicely displayed there. I guess the guy ordered them especially from somewhere. And that was a some serious collector!{eek3} The backing certainly shows them off well - and gently holds them in place too.

As to "new digs" - we are still fighting the mind-numbing bureaucracy of trying to get this one sold here!! - so haven't started serious looking yet for another! jb

500,000 sets......

Wowzers!

Yup, Serious in ways I can't even comprehend..
Over 65 auctions this week, used to try to keep the pics of all of them but it's just too much, and frankly I'm just not interested in EVERY set shown. The Antique sets are interesting but many are often crude castings, they do go for multiple thousands though.
Here is a few more
