30mm napoleonics (1 Viewer)

Welcome Alexander! beautiful flats! I'm reletively new to flats but have fallen hard for the genre.
Here are some flats I recently got, for lack of a better name I call them the Sack of Troy, beautifully painted plus just as many in various states of completion which I hope to do myself.

Dear nmrocks,

yes these beautiful flats (engraved by all time master Ludwig Frank) are from the very nice and quite large Retter series of Troy which includes all of the the classic story starting from the three goddess who made Paris choose to Odysseus trip back home. Quite famous set actually.

BTW saw the Eylau Dio picture in your recent post which isn´t known to me but is looking nice. Where did you get this from ? A website ?

Another example which belongs to these series :

Alexander,
I Thank you for the info on the Troy series, being an absolute newbie to flats I am constantly looking for info to better educate myself on them. I just recently did some on line research to find out how great and prolific Ludwig Frank was as a flat engraver and artist. I am always looking for more knowledge. By the way, Are you the Alexander, proprietor of the site:
www.flats-zinnfiguren.com ?
It is a wonderfully designed and executed site, as a matter of fact, when I found that site it was the tipping point that made me decide to start collecting flats! great figures, great content, a very well done site that I have recommended to others in the past.

Dear nmrocks,

yes your assumption is true and thank you very much for your friendly comments.

Being a flats collector for some decades I started this when getting questions and realised (in about 1998) there was no english resource of my preferred hobby. Nowadays there is BFFS Forum to help with information on flats which is really great.

Alexander,
Well this certainly is good news! you will find this a very active and diverse Forum regarding all things toy soldier/ miniatures with many manufacturers and artists contributing. I have read the BFFS forum there is some interesting threads and information however, it's generally a more subdued site with not much activity.
In reference to my pics I believe in post#53? to be frank I'm not sure where I got them, they look like there from a diorama I might have visited, if there were more I would have saved them. many of my pics have come from your site! Another good source is Zinnlovers photo bucket site, he collects pics from allover and compiles them, lots to look at, here:

If you have been a flats collector for so long you must have much more to show than whats on your site, I along with many others would really enjoy seeing more, please post! The ship was beautiful, I would love to fill out the series.
Ray

Well, this is basically true and I was always a bit reluctant to show bigger parts of my own collection at my site. And actually I´m preparing a book on the painter Vladimir Douchkine (1900 - 1989) who is my favorite flats painter of all times even if he isn´t that detailed as Wladimir Savonof, the younger russian guy who did the tremendous small details on the French guard lances.

Most of the good painted sets I own are photographed on black background, each sheet consisting of several photos to achieve a sharp display.

So I start with some Douchkine painted sets of various subjects followed by some paintigs of Savonof in next post.

Alexander,

Apart from the unbelievable painting on these the quality of the engraving needs a mention…. very hard to accept that these are flats.:cool:

Thank you so much for posting these. :)

Alexander,
Wow! Those are some truly impressive sets! thank you so much for sharing some of your collection with us. I naver cease to be amazed by these artists ability to take a 1-1/2" tall flat piece of metal and turn it into a 3-dimensional work of art! Truly on par with canvas art in my humble opinion.
Have you actually had the opportunity to meet these artist? and/or seen them work?
Your book sound interesting, english or german text? though it probably would not matter to me if it was filled with pictures of his work.
I hope you will continue to show us more of your collection as you see fit.
Ray

Dear Ray,

the book will be trilingual english/french/german and a more or less private edition consisting of about 75 of these plates. I took photos in French and Switzerland of different collections. I never met Mr. Douchkine, a russain emigre to france but visited his son in Paris.

But as this is a toy soldier forum I assembled some napoleonic soldiers to show in addition, painted by Savonof, Douchkine, Bähr, Vetterling and Blum and :

Alexander,
Just came back from a week of work on the road to see these fabulous sets! Your collection is spectacular just based on what you've shown me so far.
A question... do you display your collection? do you have a special room?
We've had other threads on the forum about "Man Caves" and "Rooms dedicated to there hobbies", You? Would be a crying shame to keep such art, such beauty hidden away in a cabinet or closet some where.

Flats always amaze me and I commend both you gentlemen on outstanding collections - they look so dimensional that its really hard to imagine that they are flats.
:) Mike

In the first days of the Battle of Austerlitz Austrian forces were heavily involved. Here elements of the 4th corps Austrian contingent under Lt. General Kollowrath move into the centre of the line. Here elements of the 38th and 55th regiments as well as Austrian Archduke Johns Dragoons move to support Russian attacks on the Pratzen Plateau.

Ray, are these yours? Really nice figures the Austrians. I will make an extra effort to photograph any sets of flats at the London show in two weeks time.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
yes there mine, I'm trying to be disciplined and buy units that were together in specific battles, mainly Austerlitz and Borodino at this point.
I would really love to see what's at the show, all I see are thru the computer and there's nothing like the real world!
Thanks again,
Ray
