thought it was time to show off my latest interest, these are flats another and one of the oldest of the toy soldier family. I've been curious for a long time, may be in my blood as I'm an air force brat, born in Germany and way more than 50% german. These pic really don't do justice, the figures are razor thin and a figure to the top of his hat on foot is about 1-1/2" tall.
I mostly blame George for getting me started in this!;)

Ray,

Austrians as well! I see why you posted the above as George's Napoleonic armies are something to behold.

A great collection you have there.

Jeff

Here's some Highlanders and Scott Greys thundering past,
got these early on as I was in the discovery mode, not quite top of the line.

I am developing a real fondness for these...I cannot get over the beautiful "3D" effect of the painting!

Wow! Ray, you have some fantastic pictures here. I really love a battle display done in flats.

Ok, so now that you are hooked, you have to join us at the British Flat Figure Society (link) http://www.britishflatfigures.org.uk/

This is a place for collectors, painters and enthusiasts of flat figures. The links page is a good resource, and there are some neat photo galleries too!

Don't worry about the progress of your painting - it's a journey and not a destination. Sprucing up old figures is a good start. One of the BFFS members, Fernando Enterprises, is a painting service that will gladly turn your bland lead into beautifully painted figures for a reasonable cost - if you're in a hurry! They also do wargame figures. (Link) http://www.miniaturelovers.com/

I'm really pleased to see the interest in flats shown here. They get more attention in Europe, but we need to spread the word here and in the States. Flats represent a very charming and lower cost alternative to the rounds. Not that I don't love my rounds, but it's just another option.

Many years ago I was given a set of Heinrichsen flats by a guy in my toy soldier club. I fell in love with them and have been collecting and painting them ever since. For whatever reason, I prefer the larger individual pieces (e.g. my icon) to the sets, but it's all good.

Nicolas,
stay away for the tiny little hooks on these babies, you get anywhere near and they sink deep!;)
PJ,
You gave me a lot of good reference sites on the painting but your right, there just no substitute for doing it, really only begining to understand what is told over and over in using oils, "use a very little paint" I just had no idea how minute a quantity everyone was talking about.
No matter how many times I see it, blending is really an art all to itself and I have yet to grasp even the most basic concepts color theory. Then again the challenge and the beauty of it done right is what attracts me.
I would sure like to get a set of those Saxons done in top quality your painter link might be the answer.

My Inspiration

Great to see someone else living in the US who collecting flats :) I'm sure you would recognize some of the images in my album entitled Leipzig that I posted back in January. My Volkershlacht album and the one labeled Sept 09 may be of interest to you also these are photo's that were taken be me while on Vacation last year . Can I ask were you are purchasing your finished figures from ? I'm always looking for new leeds ... Thanks for sharing your photo's you have a very nice collection , and its most definitely in the your blood ;) All the best Gebhard

Gebhard,
your work is renown on the forum as the highest quality, have you shown us any of your flats? Didn't realize you had already posted the Liepzig Diorama, I would really like to see it some day and of course Kulmbach sounds really exciting. Frankly all my finished figures come off of Ebay, with the exception of a couple of sets from Michigan Toy soldier shop. The Brand is Two Trees, if you talk to them they will go 20% off the retail now which helps quite a bit, They are very good quality! I've begun corresponding with a couple of the people I have bought from trying to mine for some good info as well. So you collect flats as well? would love to see some of your collection, do you paint?
Ray

How Are You Able To
Paint These Little Guys So Well ?
My 54mm Guys Aren't This
Expertly Painted.
Thanksmuch For Posting Your Pictures.

Beautiful flats. It's all a bit like comparing N & HO scale for toy trains. You can do so much more with the smaller scale.

Cheers
