There were no deserters in the Southern ranks, if anything very few (despite the ridiculous historical falsification films like "Cold Mountain") ... Everyone was enthusiastic volunteers, undisciplined as soldiers but determined to defend their land, their lifestyle and their independence.

My friend, that is incorrect. In fact desertion rates in the Confederate Army was actually slightly higher at times than in the Federal Army.
103.000 Confederates during the war, 200.00 Federals. And in 1862, the Confederacy passed the first conscription law in either Confederacy or Union history, the Conscription Act, which made all able bodied white men between the ages of 18 and 35 liable for a three year term in the Provisional Army.
