Another Closed Thread? (1 Viewer)

Pretty sad is all I can say :(
I agree...where's a little debate! I should have been a little more polite about it honestly and said rather that I dis-agree. I think the thread was closed do to my choice of how I put it? Nevertheless I love each of you and just because we dis-agree with things or possibly mistake what someone meant won't come between us. Sorry for whatever!

As we've stated many times before, political discussions nearly always lead to heated arguments and infractions. This is why they are not allowed on this forum. What you find to be a civil conversation may be very confrontational to someone who passionately disagrees with you. This is a toy soldier forum, not a political one.

Again, as I noted before I closed the first thread dealing with the shooting, the thread was allowed to stay as long as it served as a place for people to support each other. As soon as it took a sharp turn to politics (and gun control is definitely politics) we closed it.

I frankly don't see how any thread dealing with this event can avoid getting into conversations about solutions to the problem...and solutions are inherently political.

SO TRUE. Next thing you know we will be discussing the censoring of heavy metal music, anybody remember the PMRC of 1984!!!!! I won't even mention the main players as that is political!

When did political become a dirty word in our society. It is through give and take and discussion that we find solutions to problems and protecting our children is an issue that I think we all agree upon, even the gun rights lobby, which says they will have an announcement on Friday.

This Forum is a reflection of society, both good and bad. Society is not vanilla, people are not vanilla, they're complicated. By trying to tamp it down you only make thing worse and need to brace yourself for the eventual eruption.

Just because most political type threads end with heated arguments is no reason to become an invisionary into all threads of such....especially just when I thought my thread was going to change the world!^&grin

My post was, I think, the second last one before closure. It was, I believe, calm, reasoned and thoughtful. Initially I thought that the thread was closed because of where it might go rather than the nature of the final two posts. I was slightly 'miffed' - hardly a manly description, but you get the drift - because I felt then that it was a reaction to a hypothetical argument pursued by hypothetical people. Yet now having read Peter's post, my 'thoughtful' addition to the argument was indeed political and as such broke the rules of a privately run Forum - a rule I was aware of but at the time I was not conscious of the overtly political nature of my post. That is the cost of having a moderated Forum with clear rules. It is the same cost I pay, though in a much wider sense, when I get searched at the airport for bomb making material - seven times out of the last eight times I have flown! They are the rules and I sacrifice a small freedom to ensure that the greater ones survive.

I thought what about a forum for anything goes?

Then I thought what a bad idea...this place would lose it's love real quick! I'm pretty sure Peter has it right...if it ain't clean or have potential to remain clean then forget it! Treefrog should remain 100% of a joyous place as possible for all our good! I don't think Peter is against political discussions in general but rather against it here in this place. He has kept this place pretty clean in my opinion and takes punches in doing so. There is something to say about this all by itself.

AGAIN MY APPOLOGIES!

Brad,
I would be most surprised if during your time as a Moderator you did not close down any political threads.

Whilst I did not post in that thread as soon as it started I knew it was likely to become "political". How could it not ?

Even your view about protecting children and what is the right way becomes polticial if another guy thinks the
the opposite to you. One thing is for sure and that is the USA as a whole has to have a serious think about the
issue as we all know your 2nd ammendment was in the time of muskets. Times have changed.

Brett

Brett,

I did and, in fact, with Shannon I helped develop and advocated the rule, based on my experience with other forums.

However, in my thirty plus years as an attorney, negotiating agreements and dealing with bureaucracies, I've learned that policies need to be interepreted reasonably and judiciously, not inflexibly, and that on occasion there will be circumstances where there should be an exception to a rule or a policy and where policies need to adapt to the exigencies of the moment.

This is such an exception.

The main thing is that we mostly got a chance to pay our respects to those poor children and their teachers murdered for no good reason, (I believe one poor child died wrapped in the arms of her special needs teacher who was also killed:()

Politics no politics it doesn't matter , we expressed our sorrow and outrage.

Must be a God awful Christmas for those parents this year, thoughts with them.

The owner of the forum saw fit to close a thread.

People may or not agree but I think a modicum of respect should be called for. Remember this is a FREE site and is for discussion of TOY SOLDIERS.........people seem to be loosing sight of this fact lately.

Agree. As Ethan Edwards says in The Searchers, "Put an Amen to it." -- Al

Are you speaking in your official capacity or as a member. There is a difference as you obviously have a conflict of interest :rolleyes2:

Regardless, following your logic, I assume that the song title thread (as well as many other non-toy soldier threads) should be deleted. Just askin' :wink2:

Hey guys, please remember that this is Pete and Shannon's forum. They make the rules, let's move on. Besides, I get in enough political arguments in my immediate family anyway, I certainly don't need to do so here, too.
