Any news on the Glory of Rome range Germanics? (2 Viewers)

Mike,
I wonder how well the JG Roman structures would go with FL's figures. I'm guessing they'd be a good match. I too wonder if FL will be developing their own structures for the GoR range.

I have also often wondered about the JG Miniature Roman structures and whether or not they are compatible. I do know from personal comparison that the JG buildings were too small for K&C Romans. The JG Buildings are very nice looking . . . . I wonder what others think . . . .
:) Mike

Hey fellas-

Figure I might be the person to field this question as my wife grabbed me a couple dozen pieces of the JG Miniatures Roman fort for Christmas.

The buildings are a tad small however they do work. There is plenty of clearance for any FL. CS, or Conte Romans to emerge from the opening of the entryway. I just placed my FL Aquilifer in the entryway and he has clearance- though you will need to put him in at an angle slightly. I think the entry gate looks really super with the CS Roman charging out of it- though any of the legionaires would work of course.

The gantry way on the double tower is just too small- the side entry ways look like they are for 1:35th scale or even smaller. Placing figures along the walls themselves can be a challenge though they can be done. The bases are slightly too large so you gotta be careful though you can place them with an angle and be ok.

The JG barracks set is too small. I am going to have to figure out how to remedy that- I think I am going to pose it on a slight hill and position the figures in front of it- trying to work the optical illusion :redface2: At the cost of those buildings, I would pass as they really seem more like 1:35th scale.

I laid out my "new" Roman Diorama after Christmas and it is going to be rather impressive. Jill got me enough wall sections to stretch this thing over two full sheets of plywood. Rather than creating an enclosed fort, I am going to lay it out like Hadrians wall. I am going to place the barracks inside and then have Conte's Roman War Galley docked. Of course, this diorama would be incomplete without scores of Britons rampaging across the fields.

I have been reading Simon Scarrow's Under the Eagle which is a fiction work recounting the waterbourne invasions by the 2nd, 8th and 14th Legions in 43. Lots of diorama stimulation there....of course, I might as well just give in since Mike has thrown his lot in with the Legion then no one will be able to compare. :redface2::( Sahara- yours looks great!!

Another idea I had contemplated prior to my splendid Christmas surprise was using the Log fort pieces from JG. A lot of the Roman forts weren't designed to last forever like Hadrian's wall. Lots of pieces from that set I think would go very well historically.

That Orb formation looks pretty pitiful {sm4} Those boys would be crushed in a second.

Great review of the JG Roman structures and good to know information Chris. Thank you very much . . . . . Please "don't give in" . . . . I would love to see photso of your diorama and fort. I am testing absolutely new waters here with Romans and I am still learning. Collectors like yourself and Joe (Sahara) are far more knowledgeable on the subject than I am.
:) Mike

Thank you for the great review - very helpful.

Speaking of the German tribes, I do not recall them ever attacking a fortified roman position. I am therefore much more interested in Mike's set-up which corresponds more to an "open" battle or ambush.

With Chris,Sahara,Mike and others making dioramas looks like a great year for the Empire.^&grin

You are quite welcome,,,,,,and,,,,,,,quite correct. Initially I was planning on doing my diorama based on Caesars double circumvellation at Alesia. One of the interesting things about having such a fantastic wife who generally is interested in my collecting habits AND that she is friends with many of the folks I buy from is that she will start taking initiative to buy me stuff and surprise me. Suffice to say, she wrapped up one of the double gateways and I opened that and then my oldest son started unloading like two dozen boxes from her truck- sooooo, Alesia became Hadrian's wall!! {sm4}{sm4}

I am sort of messing around with doing some smaller dioramas and doing a big Hadrians wall diorama and a smaller diorama with some of these pieces showing the Eastern legions at work.

From my understandings, the Romans in Germania were motte and bailey, heavy wooded forts type forts, nothing too permanent like Hadrians wall. The Germans kept them too busy and it was too treacherous crossing the Rhine for them to get a solid footing for a permanent fort.

Mark- I am doing some research to see if any Legions adopted the dreaded beaver as their legio mascot- I got bulls, scorpions and horses but,,,,well, no beavers- I will keep working at this endeavor!! {sm3}{sm4}

Hey Andanna check out the time frame around the Civilis Revolt. There are several readings on the Batavians (sub tribe of chatti) attacking frontier forts in Germania inferior.

Also refer to the seige at fort Aliso. This is a great reference.

How about this for news {bravo}}

these guys are just BANGIN!!!

Looks like a mix between a Harley rally and a Spinal Tap concert!! {sm4}{sm4}

Which means I am head over heels in love with this release!! {sm3}{sm3}

I woke up to find the newsletter update from Matt in my email file . . . . . Wow! 2Q2012 will be Germanically nice :) . . . . . Now I have a few months to catch up on the Romans. With the various poses of the Germanic figures I can definately see a diorma scenario using the Romans in a "Orb" (Orbis or Orbem Facere) circular defensive position with the Barbarians attacking from all around . . . . ^&cool
:) Mike

Mike- I see your morning was Germanically awesome like mine :eek:

Interesting how guys like to have these barbarians smacking the legion around- for me, the Barbarians are more of an afterthought or even scenic item if you will {sm3}

Some time ago I posted a thread discussing the FL Barbarians and if they would look gritty enough- well, we have a good first look at them here. I like that they are less armored and that we are seeing furry tunics and the like. The dragon head bannerman is exceptional. Don't quite look as gritty/ grimy as the Germanics at the entrance of gladiator but they are exceptional nonetheless.

My mind is still reeling over the Samurai Cavalry. I have been waiting for FL to bust that open- I am already envisioning a small dio with several of these muchachos plunging out of the wilderness akin to The Last Samurai though admittedly a couple centuries earlier. Three weeks into Toy Soldier 2012 and the defense budget is officially realigned. {sm2}

Yes, anytime the day starts off with an FL newsletter, it is a good thing!:) I'm happy for all you Roman collectors, as these barbarian tribesmen look great. They really look like they are full of hate and discontent over the Roman invaders!

As much as I was excited to see the expansion of the Roman line with the sneak preview of the Germanic figures, I was even more so disappointed in "no news" concerning the release of the 22nd Rgmt of Foot. AWI is still my main FL interest . . . . the Romans are a nice second while waiting on the Rev War releases . . . . .

I understand how you feel my friend, but we shouldn't have to wait too much longer for the 22nd. The AWI can't lose you totally to these Roman upstarts!^&grin
