I have been reading these treads for many years and always wondered what people do when they collect King & Country - Do they buy the new releases or just buy what goes on retirement list ??

For me - I do both - some of my collection is bought the second the new release is issued and other parts of my collection are regulated by retirement announcements. It is interesting the way you collect - lot has to do with economics - but, there is a strategy to some this as well.

I am sure there are people who have no strategy at all ^&grin - but, I pose this question to start and interesting conversation on how we buy ..... :)

I do both Ron, bit of new and a bit of retired, I personally much prefer the figures and vehicles of say the last seven or eight years and feel they are much superior to what went before, so I don't go back further than that. I also like to buy something new at each of the shows if possible.

When I go to shows - I always look for the retired - "hard to find" stuff - it always amazes me on what you can find at Toy Soldier Shows {eek3}

I do buy at least something new when all else fails. :wink2:

I do finding myself regulating on buying more on the retired list - than the new release list lately.

I can never understand why people buy whats just been released?? its going to be around a while and, not doing this allows one to buy whats already out that may be heading into discontinued first.

I suppose each collector has his collecting mannerisms but, I have never been a new release or discontinued collector these two issues mean little to me. If I have missed something then its not really been that important. I do now and have since getting all the LAH collection been buying more of the older sets probably from a pre period to where Rob draws his line

My buying strategy follows one simple reasoning: I buy what I like and within that what I can (fit$ in my pocket...). Every new dispatch I elect what pleases me and start the process of acquiring it over time. I make an average of 1-2 purchases a month, encompassing all items that makes sense into my budget. Simultaneously, since I began collecting some 4-5 years ago I began listing what I liked and was out of production, and I was fortunatly able to buy everything retired that pleased me over time when the opportunity arrived, whether in toy shows or on e-bay. The result is that recently I began only to look forward. Lately, due to the more limited runs on some items, and by trying to estimate the desirability any item will have within the collector community, I'm even faster in buying the new releases that I assume will fall into the high desirability category. I don't buy an item because I feel it will increase in value in the future, I buy it because I feel I have to have it in my collection. As simple as that!

I follow your reasoning I buy what I like. With every figure I see and like, I imagine a dio in which this figure could play a part .So I buy new and old stuff when I have the necessary funds available. Retired items I buy through my local dealer ( has a heavy stock) e-bay and fellow collectors. I buy not everything. I limit my spending to the Normandy and the BOB theatres of war. I buy 2 sometimes 3 items per month ( K&C and TG) I NEVER BUY BECAUSE I THINK THE VALUE OF THE FIGURE WILL INCREASE AS TIME GOES BY!!!!!!!!
guy:)

I focus my buying and collecting on the LAH Berlin38' series, Battle of the Bulge, AK, Volksturm/ Berlin 45" items and...... Luftwaffe and RAF Aircraft and figures. Based on these lines there is always something needed, wanted, or bought on a monthly basis. From there if it is new and I like it I buy it, while still getting the older retired items pertaining to my collecting interests usually from E-Bay or here on the forum. 2 releases in which "I" will pounce on are the upcoming Russians next year and the
Stukas..... at least 2 of the proposed 3 coming down the pipeline. Cheers........

When I finally get ALL of the K&C Napoleonic AND Napoleon in Egypt ranges,

I'll then only collect

NEW NAPOLEONICS :)

Therefore I collect both new and retired.

Usually grab them once they retire unless its a must have,EG,STUKA,KETT or 109..........^&grin
Pure and simply because of finances i wish i could grab stuff when it first comes out that,s what makes collecting other company,s a hassle (Limited numbers..:()

I just buy what I like: new and retired (only Naps that is) :wink2:

Sometimes if I really like a figure a lot when it is newly released I will grab it quick because I sometimes can't resist! But with AFV's I rarely buy them straightaway because of the cost. I usually buy them when I "have to" or when I feel a retirement looming. I have made some exceptions for some of the 250 series vehicles though. But overall I buy stuff that has been on the market for a while. But here's a good example of my buying patterns: I won't be able to resist those new Bulge Germans for long, so I'll probably get most of them soon after they hit the street, but I will resist the lure of the Panzerspahwagen until a later date.

I always have a problem with the fine line between the current pieces and those 'just around the corner'. As I have no idea what lies in the future some things become appealing on issue yet six months later I think 'if I only knew this I would not have purchased that'.

The real problem occurs when something is issued that you feel is fantasic but you do not collect that specific area; do I start a new collection or stick to the areas where I have already started collecting?

The (potential) WW 2 bomb disposal team could be one such problem!

I've experienced that type of retroactive interest too when something new comes out that really strikes a chord and in doing so makes a prior set essential that perhaps didn't seem like a must have until the new "companion" came along. It's always fun wondering what's around the corner and which way the ride may take you.

I just buy everything when it comes out new, that way i do not have to worry about whats retired. I also buy most things in dupicate. Manufacturers i buy this way are kc, figarti, j jenkins, tgm among others. Its just so much fun.

And i am a big fat liar. Actully thats just a dream, i usually buy what i like that is being retired unless i really see a must have that comes out when its new. Thus the 250 series or limited runs have effected me buying earlier releases i really want. Tends to put one in a quandry sometimes

I tend to buy new or already retired. I don't think the retirement list affects me greatly unless it is with iems that were on my list but not near the top. When I get into a new series that has been around a while, I lean toward acquiring retired items first. I have taken this approach with ancient Egypt. With RAF, I got in at the beginning, and many of the releases are limited, so I tend to pre-order as soon as an item is announced. If I consider something an A item on my list I don't want to wait 2 years to add it. If it is not, I will wait a while or grab it if I see a chance to save. My wife would say my strategy lately is to buy everything in sight.

You took that strategy right out of my book! I tend to buy retirements (always playing catch up) unless it is a limited release item then I jump on it right away. My wife too says enough is enough, why don't they understand it's never enough!!!{sm3}

I know! I just got 3 amazing and fairly to very rare Egyptian pieces in the mail today, set them up, and had my wife and kids come look at them. By their looks, they might as well have been watching paint dry.
