Tragic news that Three US Firefighters were recently killed when a C-130 Aircraft crashed while fighting fires near Cooma New South Wales, in the Snowy Mountains, about 114 km from Canberra, our Capital City.


 
Very sad news about the loss of the 3 American crew from the Hercules which appears to have crashed into the ground.

The plane was from an American company that had been contracted to help fight to fires and had been doing so for months.
 
Hi Brett, yes a very tragic accident, very little margin for error when flying close to the ground, especially when visibility is limited. I believe that Coulson Aviation is a Canadian company, however the Crew were from the US.

Sad news on top of more sad news. This firestorm has been brutal and I can't fathom it. Please be safe over there.

A bit more info on the crash of the C-130 Hercules firefighting aircraft. The word here is that it was a Canadian owned C-130 air tanker which was one of two C-130 aircraft leased to Coulson Aviation, a Canadian aerial firefighting company . The flight crew were American.

While the C-130 is very powerful and stable at low speeds and low altitudes, it is being speculated that the plane may have been "aerodynamically overloaded" meaning it may have turned or changed altitude too quickly for its load, forcing it to lose altitude sharply in a valley surrounded by high mountains (Peak View). Aerodynamic overload could cause specific parts to fail like this C-130 in California. No sudden moves!!!

Since 1966 only 10 Canadian C-130s have crashed, most on landings in Arctic weather conditions. None have crashed while firefighting.

I have been following this horrible story for weeks now, and I just wanted to tell my Aussie cobbers that you are in my thoughts. I hope that this tragedy ends soon and that all of you and your families are safe.
