Baseball 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (1 Viewer)

Lots of surprises in baseball today, as well as some early blow-outs, hoping my boys (Orioles) can get off to a good start tommorow by beating the Rays, and win a series on the road this year would be a nice change, look-out Yanks and Sox, my O's are gonna do it this year...:)maybe...Sammy

Well, so far, so bad:(. Two of my three teams have lost their opener and the one that hasn't lost, hasn't played yet, (the Orioles). Yankees imploded and the Nats got hammered big time. Only 161 games left to turn it around:rolleyes:. -- Al

Don't worry Al, our boys from Balmer are gonna get in done tommorow!!...Sammy

Well, our boys did it alright. For 8 1/2 innings the Orioles had opening day won and then came those last 3 pesky outs. One typical bullpen implosion later, my Orioles were 0-1 for 2010 and I was 0-3 (Yanks, Nats, and O's) for opening day. Yanks made up for it so tonight we'll see if the other two can come through. Go teams! -- Al

Its early guys. Pennants are won in the fall, not the spring. Don't panic about April. Right now, the top starting pitchers are running out of gas in the 5th inning, and guys who will have 35 homers and 120 RBI's have no hits. I take what happens this month with a grain of salt.

Come August, I expect that, absent catastrophic injuries, the Yankees, the Red Sox, Tampa, the White Sox, the Twins, the Angels, the Rangers, and Seattle will all be in playoff contention in the AL. The Phillies, the Braves, the Rockies, the Cardinals, the Giants and the Dodgers will all be in contention in the NL. What those clubs do from August to October will be what really matters.

looks to be another long year:(:(:(...Sammy
Look on the bright side Sammy, the O's have gotten two strong starts from their starting pitching. Maybe they will get a hit or two to go with that pitching. As for the Nats.... --Al

Louis is right about not panicking. In baseball's long season, every team will win at least 60 games and lose at least 60 games (just a generalisation, give or take a few games). Therefore it is what you do with and when you do it concerning the 40 or so other games. That is all that really separates the good from the bad. Overly simple, but basically true. So all the O's and Nats have to do is find a way to win 30 more measly games a year and it's playoff time! Easy-peasy.:D:rolleyes::D -- Al

Sorry Louis, can't agree with this. Nowadays, pennants are actuall won in the off season and the Yankees once again improved their team more than another other team in baseball, the rich get richer as they say.

I see another of those mid to late 70's and mid to 90's runs in the Yankees, multiple World Series wins for sure.

There is no one in the AL who can compete with the Yankees.

And I say this as a Red Sox fan.

And it makes me want to hurl.

George,

I hope you're right, but I am not ready to crown the Yanks champs in April. What if one of the top 3 starters gets injured? What if A-Rod or Mark Teixiera gets hurt? What if Mariano Rivera gets hurt? If any of these players seasons is ended by injury, the Yanks are going to be hard pressed to win anything.

And if your team trades some of its remarkable depth at starting pitcher to pick up a big bat, that could put you over the top. Not to mention the fact that you have your top 4 starters (which are pretty much the best rotation in baseball) under contract until 2014. You are bound to pick up a big bat to replace David Ortiz, if not this year then in the offseason. With the exception of Ortiz, who is washed up, the top 6 in your lineup are excellent. I am not ready to count out the Red Sox in April either.

George,

I hope you're right

I hope I'm wrong.

Factoring out injuries, there is no way the Yankees win less than 100 games.

They took two out of three vs the Red Sox (and if CC didn't run out of gas Sunday night, they win that game too) with your two corner infielders as non factors, what are the odds they both heat up, I'd say pretty good.

Posada and Swisher killed the Red Sox as did your new center fielder, he hit two home runs in the series (and what is Sterling smoking anyway, his call of the home run last night was embarassing, "The Grandiman can".......he has a screw loose that guy).

And Ortiz is killing the Red Sox in the middle of the line up, he's an automatic out, he's done, D-O-N-E.

They have no big bats and to get one will cost too much, letting Bay walk was a boneheaded move, end of story.

I call em like I see em.

And again, the fact that Jeter, Posada, Petite, Rivera, etc, etc have gotten better as they've gotten older seems a bit odd to me.

Maybe you should ask Roger Clemens what the deal is..........

Oh George you kill me! I dont often agree with Red Sox fans but have to say I agree with several of your points. I think Ortiz should have hung it up at the end of last season and wonder if he is going finally realize that he is past his prime and needs to bow out gracefully, even with the bum knee Lowell makes better sense as a DH to me. I think your team has some outstanding players and will likely be in the thick of it for the entire season so dont get too down yet its only the 8th of April and a lot of baseball is yet to happen.

Nice to hear from you as always. The sad fact is baseball with their guaranteed contracts is a joke; Ortiz is delusional, he actually thinks the Red Sox are going to resign him and bring him back next year, please.

Francoma will keep him in the 5 hole for two months and he'll slowly kill the Red Sox one at bat at a time, it's going to be painful to watch just like last year.

He can't catch up to a decent fastball anymore, let alone Petite's fastball (can that thing break a windowpane or what?) can't hit lefties anymore and anytime he does hit the ball hard, it's right into the shift that cokebottle glasses Maddon came up with (I still love his little earflap hat he wore in the playoffs two years ago; would rather have my ears fall off than wear a hat like that).

We'll see how things go, but truth be told your team is stacked and like I've said before, two of my favorite players are Posada and Rivera.

Posada is just money and after what he and his wife have gone through with his son, he's a giant among men as far as I'm concerned.

And Mo is a beast and just a real nice guy, have met him a couple of times and he is a class act; will never forget opening day 2005 when he was introduced and was given a huge ovation and he laughed his rear end off and tipped his cap.

The man is a true gentleman and a credit to the sport.

I have to say, early season baseball is about as confusing as a sport can be. In his first performance, CC Sabathia looked good, not great, for 5 innings before running out of gas in the 6th and giving up a total of 5 runs.

Yesterday, he throws 110 pitches, getting 2 outs in the 8th, before he gives up a hit. What a difference a week can make in April.

Meanwhile, Mark Teixiera, a terrific hitter, starts the season 0-17 (not unusual, as Tex always hits poorly in April). Then yesterday, he gets 3 hits.

Fun. Unpredictable, but fun.:D

it only get worse for me so far, my O's can't buy a win, they can not finish a game to save thier ***, how many games are we gonna give up runs in the 8/9th innings this year only to lose games we had a shot at winning, is it football season yet??:confused::(...Sammy

I hear that. At least the Skins are making a few moves.;):D

Yeah, the O's can't seem to put it together. At least their starting pitching has been improved. To win games, a team must be able to score, late if need be, and the O's haven't done that either. It's still early and the hitting and bullpen can come around, as long as they don't wait until the all-star break. But, jeez, those late loses are frustrating! -- Al

Yeah, the way the season's going so far, I'm in agreement, except let's bring on the real football: the World Cup!
