16,392? A lot of those fans must have been dressed as empty seats then.

As far as rabid fans in winning cities; the Orioles were give or take the class of the American League from about 1966 through 1983, those teams were loaded with not only great talent, but Hall of Fame talent, there was a bit of a dip from 1976 through 1981, during which time the Yankees were buying their World Series appearances.

As a fan of baseball, to see a franchise with such a rich tradition of excellence sink as far as the Orioles did is a real shame IMO, I hope they get back there sooner than later............
George, 16,392 was the 'official' count. We all know what that means, tickets sold but not butts in seats. The O's fans have become expert at dressing like empty seats. Maybe the orange and black will break out again this season, with a winning record. -- Al

It would be a nice thing to see, I remember as a kid how loaded those Orioles teams were in the late 60's, early 70's, then again in the late 70's early 80's...........and the Frank Robinson trade with the Reds was highway robbery............

Those were great teams, loaded with HOFer's. The team was fun to watch but the best thing was the constant battle of wills between Manager Earl Weaver and pitcher Jim Palmer. It was neverending entertainment. I miss it. -- Al

Al, if there was really 16,392 at Camden Yards last night then that park must have at least 475,000 seats ..... either that or 15,000 of that 16,392 people were dressed up as the Blue Men group.

Probably a little of both.:wink2::rolleyes2: -- Al

hey Brad, Santana looked real good today with that shutout. Mets are still playing well. -- Al

Al,

No complaints here. I think this is more than anyone could have expected, or even hoped. If they could have a 500 season that would be a great accomplishment. I also think that even if they're in it come the trading deadline Sandy Alderson will not deviate from his plan; he won't go for an easy fix to the detriment of long term gain.

Brad

Nats just finished an impressive 3 game sweep of the Braves, in Atlanta. The Nats out-pitched, out-hit them, and out-fielded them. Still got a long ways to go but the Nats look like the real deal with outstanding pitching and their hitting has come alive the last couple of weeks, making them a very dangerous team. Brian Harper also appears to be all that was advertised as he has now played in 27 games and gotten 101 at bats. He is batting .287 with 4 doubles, 3 triples (leads team), and has 4 Hr's along with 11 RBI's. He has played in every game and inning since being brought up and the OJT is going very well. He has struck out 19 times but tempers that with 14 BB. His fielding has been pretty good with a boo-boo here and there but his speed compensates while he learns. He is a versitile outfielder and has played all 3 outfield positions as well as batting all over the line up. I am very impressed with his speed on the base paths. He is very aggressive and has turned a couple of singles into doubles and a couple of doubles into triples. Just very fast. We shall see what happens when the rest of the league 'learns' him and how he handles the adjustment the enemy pitchers make, but for now it is a great ride. The kid ain't bad for a 19 year old. Just as a trivia question answer, Harper was the first teen-ager Doc Halliday had ever faced in his career, and Harper got a Hr off of him. -- Al

Brad, Dickey followed Santana's shutout with a very impressive shutout of his own. Mets looking real impressive and hanging in with the Nats. A couple of big surprises for MLB, as who would have thought the Nats and Mets at 1 and 2 this point of the season? I love this game but it sure a lot more fun when one's teams are doing well.:wink2: -- Al

Just in case no one has noticed, Pujols is beginning to come out of his funk. He has hit 6 Hr's in his last 12 games and doubled his RBI's. His BA is still low but slowly climbing. Angels might make a race of the West, after all. -- Al

So the NYY/Angels game is on NYY, ah I mean MLB network and since the Celtics are getting blown out by Lefraud and the Heat, I switch over to see Weaver get hurt after three pitches and the Yankees go up 3-0 in the top of the first.

So out comes the immortal Phil Hughes and what happens...........single, LONG fly ball out, single whistled past Aroid, single, run #1, double, run #2, single, runs #3 and #4, tailor made DP ball to captain intangibles, just a force out at second, ground ball out, inning over.

4 runs in 1/2 inning; what a tomato can this stiff is..................then the Celtics make a run and tie up the Heat at the half...............

Yes, the NYY starting pitching trio of Hughes, Karoda, and Nova, have been, shall we say, inconsistent. Unfortunately, the Celts flamed out in the second half. I hope they can rally and take out Miami. -- Al

Oh no, please don't tell me my Orioles wagon is starting to fall apart already:mad:...we lose 2 out of 3 to Boston and KC last week, then get blown out in Toronto last nite:mad::mad:...come on O's this has actually been a fun season so far, please fix the loose wheel and keep the wagon on course:)...Sammy

Sammy, I think the problems are the old bugaboo, the starting pitching. Arrieta, Matusz, and Hunter are being ineffective at present, leaving the O's in the hole. Chen and Hammel have been outstanding but 2 effective starters cannot carry the whole load. The hitting has been very good (except the last few games) and the fielding so-so, but the above mentioned three starting pitchers have to step up or be replaced. Matusz is showing signs of coming around but Hunter has been a loss and Arrieta is a mystery. The O's will go just as far as the starting pitching will carry them. Right now it needs to be fixed. -- Al

Is it just me or do there seem to be an unusual number of closer's failing at their jobs this year. Sure seem to be a LOT of walk-off wins occurring. -- Al

A great night tonight, one of the great ones in Mets history as they finally threw a no hitter. Johan was amazing. Simply a great night.

Congratulations to the Mets franchise and their fans as they finally get the no-hitter. With the rich history of pitching that the Mets have, it has been a mystery why those many great pitchers always threw their no-hitters AFTER leaving the Mets. There have been 7 such pitchers and this doesn't take into account the 10 pitchers that threw no-hitters BEFORE joining the Mets. Now the Mets are part of no-hitter history.{bravo}} -- Al

It's all the news today around here as well as it should be. We were all emotional about it. Still can't believe it --- after 50 years!

The dogfights in the AL East and NL East continue. In the AL, all 5 teams are within 3 games of 1st place, while in the NL, all 5 teams are within 2.5 games of 1st. No other divisions in MLB offer anything close to this kind of daily drama. Have a bad week and go from 1st to last or have a good week and go from last to 1st. Don't see anyone able to seperate themselves, at least not at this point, so I still expect these races to go on all season. Good baseball. -- Al

After 5 straight losing seasons in SF, I'm glad to see Barry Zito is pitching effectively and winning, for a change. He kind of fell down the rabbit whole in SF after being a real good pitcher in Oakland for 7 years. Hope it continues for him. -- Al
