Tillman's second start for the O's didn't go so well. His first start he goes 8.1, allows 2 unearned runs, and gets the win. Tonight he goes .2 of the first inning, gives up 7 runs (again, all but one unearned) and the O's now trail 8-1 in the 3rd. Ugly. Their porous defense has hurt them all year, but the hitting covered it up, much as the hitting covered up the questionable starting pitching. Right now, nothing is working. -- Al

Sammy, I don't know if the season is finished for the O's or not, but they sure have some big problems to solve. In addition to the fielding, hitting, and starting pitching problems, the closer, Johnson, has had two horrible outings in a row. Hope it is just an aberation and not a trend. He has been all but unhittable this season, and now, suddenly, he can't get anyone out. First, he blows a gimme save the other night, giving up 4 runs in one inning, and last night he gives up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Two disasters in a row for him. I hope he isn't hurt because that would finish the O's chances. The O's pitching problems are just unbelievable. Out of their 5 starters the O's had to begin the season, 3 are now in the minors and 1 is on the DL. All the O's can do is bring up pitchers from the farm system that have already failed to perform in prior chances with the O's, like Tillman and Britton. Things don't look good at present. :( -- Al

Left field at Fenway is 310 down the line going slowly out to 379, about the easist homer field in baseball, just ask Bucky Dent. Yankee Stadium is 318 before angling quickly out to 399. Center Field at Fenway is only 389 except for that ridiculous triangle. Yankee Stadium goes from 399 to 408 back to 385. Right field at Fenway has the Pesky pole, only 302 feet, before going quickly out to 380. Yankee Stadium is 318 down the right field line before going gradually out to 385. There are just as many cheap homers to be had by a quality lineup at Fenway as there are at Yankee Stadium. With the exception of right field once you are about 30 feet off the Pesky pole and the triangle, Yankee Stadium is uniformly much larger.

Nice try George. Check your facts on the Baseball Almanac.

I'm not talking about foul poles Louis, how many home runs hit or wrap around the pole, not many, the porch in right field at Yankee Stadium is comical.

And the green monster takes away more home runs than it gives, not to mention right field in Fenway is a dead zone, has been for years since they built the luxury and press boxes and eliminated the breeze going through there to right.

Yankee Stadium to right is a jet stream with the way the new stadium is built, it's been talked about numerous times.

Doesn't matter anyway as according to you, they are getting bounced in the first round; sorry, I don't see it, they'll play the Angels for sure at this rate and they've owned them the past few years, then it's the Rangers with the Yankees having HFA, which they did not have before.............

Took the time to check on the team stats and it is not pretty. The teams pitching ranks in the lower third in all baseball in most of the major catagories and the hitting is similar. It is the fielding which has been a real disaster. The O's rank first in errors and thus have a MLB worst fielding percentage of .977, while giving up 46 unearned runs in 90 games. Beats me how Showalter has kept this mess afloat as long as he has. The O's are now 1-4 since the break and won only 6 of their last 23 games. Hope Buck can rally them, but without pitching, hitting, and fielding, things look bleak. :(:( -- Al

Have a good time at the game, Brad. I will be mourning the evident death of the O's as their starting pitching suffered a possible death blow last night when Hamel, who has been their best pitcher, was forced from the game with a knee injury, which he has been nursing all season. Without him, and with their hitting in a big slump, the O's will sink pretty fast. They still are in second place, but are now 8 games out, and playing poorly. The AL East, which earlier looked to place a possible 3 teams in the play-offs, is now in a struggle to keep any of their teams in the wild-card race. The NYY's have the largest division lead in MLB, and no one in the AL East seems inclined to close the gap, at least not right now, and their combined mediocre baseball has left the door open for other teams to regain a place in the race. I don't see how the O's can stay in the race without some sort of miracle occurring in regards to the starting pitching. Oh well, may have to wait a little longer for the O's vs. Nats World Series.{eek3}:rolleyes2::tongue: -- Al
If the playoffs started today, the NYY's would be the only team from the AL East to make them. The AL East teams are all packed together with the exception of the division leading NYY, who lead 2nd place Baltimore by 10 games. Boston and Tampa trail the O's by 1/2 a game, with the Jays 2 games behind them. Four teams within 2 1/2 games of each other, but all out of the playoffs as todays games get ready to kick off. This could change, of course, and the AL East could still place a team or two in the wildcard, but at this rate, IMO, it looks like the NYY, White Sox, Rangers, and Angels are seperating themselves, leaving just one position for all the other teams to fight for. Baltimore, Boston, Tampa, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, and Oakland are all legitimate contenders for this last place as all seven of these teams are within 3 games of each other. Keeping in mind that there are still some 70+ games to go, lots of time to catch up or drop out, it should still make for some good baseball in the AL.
The NL is a little more spread out, with Washington, Cinncy, Pittsburgh, and San Fran all looking good, at present. I'm impressed with the Pirates, but not convinced they can stick, although their odds are helped by Votto's injury. Atlanta, St. Louis, and LA seem to be the main contenders for the last NL playoff spot, all being within 3 games of each other. It falls off after that. Same caveat though, still a ways to go, but should be interesting, to say the least. -- Al

Nats imploded, big time, last night. Had a 9-0 lead after five and lost the game in the 11th! Had their best pitchers get messed up. I guess it's just one of those games but I do hope it doesn't have any residual effects on their moral. It was a 'gimme' win that would have allowed them to gain on everyone in the division. Biggest blown lead in Nats history. It was UGLY. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Wow what a difference a week can make!!! O's on a 5 game winning streak!! I don't think they won 5 games all of last July:) trying to keep the excitement down, but hey, were still fighting for a wild-card stanger things have happened I'm sure, and the Yanks are tied in the 10th, a loss there we would only be 6 out, maybe I won't break out my Nagata Jersey just yet:smile2:...Sammy

Right you are, Sammy. The turn around has been because the O's patchwork starting pitchers have suddenly gone on a tear. Five straight quality starts have kept the O's in the games and allowed the hit or miss offense to score just enough to win. Tillman twice and now Britton have thrown good games just when the shattered O's rotation, and the team, were on the verge of sinking. It was a great weekend for the O's. -- Al

What started out as a huge showdown between 1st place Nats and 2nd place Braves was a disaster for the Nats for the first two games of the four game series. The above game on Friday night was followed on Saturday by the Braves shutting out the Nats 4-0 in game 2 and the Braves cutting the division lead to 1.5 games. The Nats could have panicked, layed down, and lost the division lead if the Braves were able to win games 3 and 4 of the series. The Nats managed to regain their composure and behind their usual great starting pitching, won games 3 and 4 to maintain the division lead that they came in with. This turn around is directly attributable to left-handed pitcher John Lannan, who was the Nats starter who lost out to the numbers game in spring training and had languished all season in the minors. Lannan was brought up to pitch game 3 of the series with the huge pressure to stop the panic and put the ship back on course. He did this in A-1 style. He gave up 2 runs in the 1st then shut the Braves down for the rest of his 7 inning stint, gaining a 5-2 win, and saving the Nats in the process. The Nats then walked away with game 4 today, 9-2. Thank you, John. I hope the Nats appreciate what you did. I sure do. -- Al

Yankees lose!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O's only 6 out, divisional play coming up soon...Sammy

Rough weekend for the NYY's. Lost 4 straight to Oakland, all by 1 run. Meanwhile, the suddenly revived O's won all their weekend games and have cut 4 games off the Yankee division lead. Almost a race again. :wink2: -- Al

Mets are in free fall, losers of nine out 10, under 500 the first time this year. I never thought they would be a contender but it's a shame a nice season is going down the drain.

never know, maybe the Os may have a chance, but I'm just excited about that.

Have you heard? The NYY's have solved their lead-off batter/left field problem with another big trade by getting Ichiro Suzuki from Seattle for a couple of minor league pitchers. True, Ichiro is 38 and on the downside of a great career, but what a great get as a short term solution. -- Al

The Phillies just finished making mush out of the Brewers bullpen. It's as bad a 3 game series for a bullpen as I can remember. In all 3 games the Brewers had late inning leads and lost them all. The Brewers blew an 9th inning lead in game 1, and lost 7-6. They blew an 8th inning lead in game 2, and lost 7-6. And today, they blew a 10th inning lead, and lost 7-6. Three late inning leads blown and three losses by a 7-6 score. Embarrassing, to say the least. Wouldn't want to be in the Brewers clubhouse after this series. -- Al

Patriots training camp opened up today, Brady looked sharp, Gronk was out there all day, corners and linebackers are F-A-S-T, super fast.

Time to pack away the Red Sox shirts and break out the Patriots gear, it's go time.

"Forever 500, aka, the 2012 Boston Red Sox".....................

Busy trade day as the Marlins and Phillies throw in the towel and Texas has once again come up with a key pitcher to help down the stretch. -- Al
