The decision to shut down Strasburg seems to have had a negative impact on the Nats beyond the loss of his pitching. The whole team has played very uninspired ball since his last start on Sept.7, which the Nats lost. They are only 8-9 since that date and their lead is now down to 4 games over Atlanta. A 4 game lead with 8 to go should be enough, but the Nats seem to be intent on backing into the playoffs. Sub-.500 ball the last few weeks is NOT how a team wants to go into the playoffs, especially having to play the opening games on the road thanks to the wacko playoff schedule. I hope Davey can light a fire under them and get them back to the superior ball thay played up until September, otherwise it could be a short playoff for DC.{sm5} --Al
Well, 3 games left and the Nats still refuse to clinch the division. A win today would have done it but they got stomped by the Cards for the second time in 3 games. Leaves them at .500 (11-11) since Strasburg was shut down. They are just not playing with any fire right now. Sure is a worrisome stretch this close to the playoffs.:(
On the up side, the no-name O's have won again and stay tied with the NYY's for first place. I like the O's chances.^&grin -- Al

With five games to go, I would say the Os are in as the WC but probably not as the Div winner. As will probably hold on. Halos only shot is if they are 1 out with 3 to play. Trumbo may have waken up so that could help.

On the good side Mets ruined Chipper's night in Atlanta. A little bit of payback for all these years.

Really? I think Chipper will enjoy being in the playoffs AGAIN while the Mets suffer another season as (near) cellar dwellers.

Take heart, though, maybe you can boo Chipper at his induction to Cooperstown, and "ruin" that for him, too. Classy!

Well it has come down to the final week of the final series of who will wear the AL East crown this year, all I can say is what a year it has been, and a one I will remember for along time, my Orioles have played through so much this year that I still can't believe were in it the last week of baseball, however it turns out, playoffs?,wild card? in or out/ a title??it's been a wild ride that I have enjoyed every minute of, after 14 years of pain and misery it's good to be playing in October for something special, so let's go O's as old Wild Bill Hagey use to scream at Memorial stadium..."Give me a O-R-I-O-L-E-S!!!

P.S. to George..my faith is with the O's, but I will be the biggest Red Sox fan in the nation for the next 3 days as well:)...Sammy

I would think the odds favor the Yanks; their schedule is easier and the Yanks have grimly refused to give the Os any undisputed share of first place. More so than the Os, they don't want to play in the play-in WC game.

3 games in and the O's are playing like champions, but then again, they started last year 6-1.:rolleyes2: Ugly starts for the NYY's and the Red Sox. NYY got 1 good start out of 3 but went winless to Tampa. Sox were even worse. Got a good start in the opener but lost, and then gave up 23 runs in the next 2 games. Both teams now 0-3, 3 games back of the O's.{eek3}:wink2: I declare the season officially done. O's win! O's win! -- Al

Hey Al, remember this conversation months ago?:) maybe you were right!!:)...Sammy

I remember that guy, he used to climb up on the dugout roof and lead that cheer, he looked like he was so hocked up on grass and goofballs he had no idea where he was.

Give it up as far as hoping the Red Sox will help you out vs the Yankees, they rolled over like dogs vs your Orioles and they're fielding a AAA line up at this point, they are probably one of the worst teams in baseball right now, this is by far the worst Red Sox team in my lifetime.

They have zero shot vs the Yankees.

ZERO.

Thank you Texas!!!!!!!!!!! the Orioles are in the 2012 Playoffs!!!!! now on to bigger and better things like the AL East title.

George you know nothing would make the Sox season better then knocking the Yanks out of the AL East title, so I'm hoping there is some old Red Sox magic left in the tank:)...Sammy

Less than Zero. Moreover, although a real long shot, Tampa Bay is still competing for the WC that Oakland currently leads. They will not go quietly into the night. The likelihood they sweep the Rays is not as likely as the Yankees sweeping the Sox.

The tank is empty and all the gas stations are closed.

Congrats to Baltimore for clinching a playoff berth, as did Texas and the Yankees with Texas' one run win over the Angels.:smile2: This should be a terrific post season, with several teams nobody expected to make it, like the O's, the Nats and the A's.^&cool

Sammy,

You're thinking of the 2004 - 2007 Red Sox. This is not that version.

This race reminds me of the 1980 race. The Orioles got very close, within 1/2 game, but could never get over the hump and finished second. It's the same here: they just can't seem to get over the hump.

Sammy,

You're thinking of the 2004 - 2007 Red Sox. This is not that version.

Actually the 2005 Red Sox got swept by the eventual WS champion White Sox, the 2006 version did not make the playoffs at all.

But point taken, this team is pathetic, the worst team since the 1966 version and at least that version had some great young talent on the verge of becoming stars, this team is a total train wreck on the road to nowhere.

It can't be that bad. They still have some good talent.

Sammy, I do remember it now that you have reminded me.^&grin Fans have eternal hope and enthusiasm. This time it has been well justified, though still a wee bit of a surprise. The O's started hot and are finishing hot. On to the World Series. Can anyone say 'dynasty'? (See first sentence.):wink2: -- Al

There is always hope for next year. The '66 Sox became the '67 AL champions. That was a great team, with Jim ("I can't ski.") Lonborg, Rico, Tony C., and the great Yaz. Bad luck that they ran into Bob Gibson at the height of his power in the Series. That '67 team has always been my favorite Sox team. -- Al

Quite agree. The Rays are extremely dangerous and are still a sort of bugaboo for the O's, who have never done all that well against them. Even though the O's are 9-6 against them this year, they are 3-3 in Tampa. An O's sweep is unrealistic so some help from the Sox will be greatly appreciated. I have faith that the O's can take two and that at least one of the Yank starters will implode. Honestly, this race could be a tie, headed to a one game playoff for the division title. Lots of fun and lots of possibilities with only 3 games left. -- Al

The scales could be balanced more in the Os favor if the As win tonight and end any possibility of the Rays getting a WC berth. I can't imagine they would put up the same fight.

It is that bad.

They stink.

They have two back up catchers and not a real starter, no first baseman, no shortstop, no left or right fielder.

They've got Pedrioa and 2nd, Middlebrooks at 3rd and Ellsbury in CF who is going to be a free agent after the 2013 season, then need players everywhere else.

They are a total train wreck.

1967 was the Impossible Dream team, back in those days there was no playoff to get to the World Series, you won the AL or NL, you're in.

Lomborg started game 7 on 2 days rest, he was toast.

People around here point to that team as the team that jump started interest in the Red Sox again around here, they are fondly remembered and they lost the world series.

1975 was a killer, probably one of the most classic WS match ups of all time, 1978 and Bucky Dent was beyond brutal, 1986 and Bill Buckner was like a shank in the side, 2003 and Aaron Boone and Grady Little was Chinese Water Torture; they didn't just lose, they lost in crushing, gut wrenching fashion.

2004 changed everything, 2007 was a bonus; this year was ten steps backward, that's the way sports is....................

I think you mean Grady beepin Little. That's still one of my worst nightmares. However, 2004 was a good payback.
