I think you mean Grady beepin Little. That's still one of my worst nightmares. However, 2004 was a good payback.

That non move with Timlin in the bullpen ready to go was by far the biggest brain fart in the history of Boston sports.

Timlin in the 8th, Williamson in the 9th was the phrase all year long, yet Grady soiled himself on the mound and cost the Red Sox a shot at the title.

The worst part was as Boone rounded the bases that blowhard Charlie Steiner exclaimed "There really IS a curse afterall!!!"

What a boob.

This is the same nitwit who exclaimed after the Jets went up by two scores on the Browns in the 1986 playoffs yelled "It's on to Denver for the AFCCG!!"..............right before the Jets melted down and blew the lead, the game and the trip to Denver.

That's another game I want to forget. I can still see that fool Gastineau putting the late hit on Kosar.

That game was on the NFL Network awhile ago, the whole game turned on that penalty.

The Jets remind me so much of the pre 2004 Red Sox; they don't just lose, they lose in crushing style.

The 1984 AFCCG, the 1986 playoff game vs the Browns, the loss in 2004 vs the Steelers in a game they should have won, which would have set up a Patriots/Jets AFCCG, then the two back to back AFCCG losses to the Colts and the Steelers..................

Thanks a lot George! I was having my coffee while reading your post and I laughed so hard coffee just shot out of my nose!!! Too funny! Especially the Chinese Water Torture quote!!!{sm4}

1967 was the Impossible Dream team, back in those days there was no playoff to get to the World Series, you won the AL or NL, you're in.

Lomborg started game 7 on 2 days rest, he was toast.

People around here point to that team as the team that jump started interest in the Red Sox again around here, they are fondly remembered and they lost the world series.

1975 was a killer, probably one of the most classic WS match ups of all time, 1978 and Bucky Dent was beyond brutal, 1986 and Bill Buckner was like a shank in the side, 2003 and Aaron Boone and Grady Little was Chinese Water Torture; they didn't just lose, they lost in crushing, gut wrenching fashion.

2004 changed everything, 2007 was a bonus; this year was ten steps backward, that's the way sports is....................

Congratulations to the Nats on becoming the NL East Champions, even if they did back into it.:rolleyes2: They earned it by being the best team until the last 3 weeks, and it proved too late for the Braves to catch them. Now, they better learn how to start winning again or it will be a short trip in the playoffs.{sm2} No joke, they are now 11-12 since the Strasburg shutdown. Beginning to look like that might have been a bad decision. We shall see whether the Nats gain regain any momentum. -- Al

Bleep! The O's lost and the Yanks won. O's down 1 with 2 to go. Boston put up no fight and the O's couldn't hit until the 9th and then it was too little, too late. However, it ain't over till the fat lady sings. -- Al

The wild ride for the playoffs is ALMOST set. 160 freakin' games and 9 out of 10 teams are set, with only the Dodgers still chasing the Cards for the final WC spot, but that doesn't look good for them as they are 2 back with 2 to go. It is a hoot that 2 AL Division titles are still up in the air, holding up the seedings. All of this is so unneccesary. Just move the O's and Nats straight to the World Series. Problem solved.{eek3}^&grin -- Al

Sorry about that, if your coffee went all over your laptop and ruined it, I'd have to throw a new one in with your next order........:wink2:

Great effort last night by the Red Sox; if the US armed forces fought in WWII like they have this year, we'd all be eating sauerkraut, bratwursts and strudel and drinking saki.

One of my grandfathers and two of my uncles were the three biggest Red Sox fans I've ever met; I say were because sadly, all of them have passed.

The way this team has played this year would have killed the three of them if they were still alive, the worst Red Sox team in 46 years....................

George, the Sox are resilient. They will be back. As a lifetime fan, you know that they field competitive teams almost every year. This season is just one of those freak down years. As you say, it has been since 1965 that a Sox team lost more games than this team. A pretty remarkable run. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1932 to find a team with more losses. What the fans are looking at is a once every 30-45 year blip on the scope. Baltimore lost more games than this years Sox NINE times since 2001, also an impressive record in it's own right. The Sox will recover, as they always do.:wink2: -- Al

George,

The Red Sox will reload in the offseason and, if their GM does a good job, will be a playoff caliber team next year. The dumped so many bad free agent contracts this year that they fielded a starting 9 last night with a total payroll of $12.5 million. They will be in a position to spend over $100 million in free agent acquisitions. If they obtain two quality starting pitchers and 5 or 6 good solid (no need for big stars, good fielding .280 hitters who hit around 20 homers are a lot cheaper than players with gaudy numbers who tend to tank under pressure, just ask the Yankees) major league position players with that $100+ million in free agent signings, they will be right back in the mix.

Believe it or not, I hate to see the Red Sox lose 90+ games, it would have been much better as a Yankee fan for this series to have been winner take all for the Division, rather than the Sox just playing out the string. This is literally the first time in my lifetime (I'm 44) that I didn't see the Red Sox as the biggest threat to my team. I fully expect it will be the last time.

Anyway, football season has started, and, despite getting robbed of a game by the replacement officials, your Patriots are still pencilled into the AFC Championship Game as far as I'm concerned. I still see your Pats winning 12 games.

Well, the Angels's season is over. Although disappointing in the end, it was good to be able to root for a team in the pennant race again.

What ultimately hurt them was that 6-14 start and their swoon after the All Star Game, when they were actually leading the WC chase and were not that far behind the Rangers. A definite killer was when they were up 7-0 on the third game of a four game trip to Arlington and lost the game and when they got swept at home by the Rays. Trumbo disappearing for most of the second half until this past weekend didn't help either. However, Mike Trout (who went 4 for 5 last night) and Torii Hunter were revelations, particularly Torii in the second half with a .350 average. I hope he resigns with the Halos. You also have to factor in the As. That's a team that never gives up. There were a few games down the stretch where I thought the Halos would gain a game but the As came back. Very impressive team. It will be a shame that the As and Os have to play each other, unless the Os somehow find a way to win the Division.

They could use an upgrade at third base, left field (Vernon Wells is the West Coast equivalent of Jason Bay) and the bullpen; I never want to see Sciosia use Isringhausen in a big spot again. Although Frieri was ok as the closer, he had his moments, and they could use a big time closer. I think people started to see why the Padres traded him.

Thanks Al and Louis, I appreciate it.

To see this team go from having the best record in baseball last September 1st to missing the playoffs and finishing with 90+ losses is mind boggling to me.

They should rebuild through the draft and concentrate on bringing up young talent, signing free agents does not work as by the time most of them get to free agency, they are in their late 20's, early 30's and you end up with players on the back nine who kill you in the last few years of their contracts.

Build through the farm system.

I read an article today where the Orioles were pissed over that AAA lineup the Red Sox threw out on the field last night; sorry Buck, that's the best we have right now, Pedrioa has a broken finger and Ellsbury is hurt too.

Maybe your team shouldn't have acted like you won the World Series in the last game of the year last year after knocking the Red Sox out of the playoffs, Karma is a you know what.

And as far as the Patriots; the team to beat in the AFC IMO is Houston, they look outstanding so far and are 4-0, the Ravens don't concern me one bit as their defense is not what it used to be, too many players at skill positions on the wrong side of 30, not to mention they had them beat two weeks ago and gagged the game away.................

The Red Sox gave it a good try and almost pulled it off tonight. Pity. Well, there's always tomorrow night.

Leave it to the corpse of Raul Ibanez to pinch hit in the 9th and hit a two run shot, then get the game winning single in extra innings.

Just classic, in a Bataan death march sort of way.

Sorry Orioles fans, how sweet would it have been to go into tomorrow tied with the MFY's........................................

It would have been great to see them have to go to Baltimore and go in as the WC and have to face that prospect.

161 games played, and the Rangers, A's, and Yankees all control their own destiny for a Division title, with Baltimore still alive. What a great season!^&cool

Is this a great game or what? 161 games played and nothing is decided yet in the AL East and West. Can't believe the no-name A's have caught the Rangers and once again the O's win a 1 run game (now 29-9 in them, MLB's all time best winning % for that catagory) and stay within tying distance of NY. Tonight will be a wild ride for all 4 teams and I can't wait. Would love to see NY have to come to Bmore for a one game winner takes it title game. We do owe NY some payback for the Jeff Maier incident in 1996. If there is any justice in the universe, the O's win this one. And how about Miguel Cabrera and the Triple Crown? If memory serves, Yaz was the last winner in 1967. It's been 45 years since anyone has seen a winner and that means there are a whole lot of fans who have never seen it. This has been a great, great year, even though no one has hit 75 home runs. I would be remiss, as an O's fan, if I didn't acknowledge the feat of Chris Davis, who hit a home run last night for the 6th game in a row, tying the record. His Hr last night was the only run in the O's 1-0 win. -- Al

Think the Phillies could have used his offence this year? Michael

Since I wrote all this, Guthrie continues his resurrection. Two more starts, 8 innings each, 2 earned runs allowed, and 2 ND's because KC doesn't score for him, but have won each of his last 8 starts. Season ERA now 'down' to 4.92, (3.13 with KC). After only going 7+ innings in 4 of his first 22 starts this season, he has now gone 7+ innings in 7 of his last 8 starts. I'm glad to see it. He was the O's workhorse for quite a while. -- Al
My man Guthrie ended his season on a high note. Since his rebirth on August 8, he went 5-0 in 11 starts, with the team going 10-1. Overall he was 5-3 for KC with a 3.16 ERA. Ended the season 8-12 after starting 3-12 and got his final ERA 'down' to 4.76 after it hit a high of 7.02 in mid June. Not a good year at all, but he made some good headway and layed some good foundation for next year over the last 2 months. I hope the turnaround continues for him next year, where ever he ends up. I sure wish he could have stayed with the O's for their big year. Even with this down year, his stats would have put him 2nd in starts, innings pitched, and 3rd in wins for the O's. Oh well, he has next season to look forward to. -- Al

Nats closed the season this afternoon by beating Philly and earning their 98th win of the season. This gives them the best record in MLB and earns them homefield advantage for however long they last in the playoffs. Their remarkable season has given them a chance a several post-season awards such as Comeback Player of the Year in LaRoche. LaRoche should also receive some MVP votes. Gio Gonzalez has a legitimate shot at the Cy Young. I think Harper is a lock for Rookie of the Year, Johnson as Manager of the Year, and Rizzo as GM of the Year, or whatever. A fantastic year that I hope ends in a World Series birth. -- Al
