Sox lose 2-0 to the immortal Ricky Nolasco and the Dodgers, the Sox miss Kershaw and Greinke in this series and this clown looks like 1999 vintage Pedro Martinez out there.

AND, naturally two ex Red Sox players play a roll in the win.

Awesome.

The game was played in about two hours, I feel bad for all those Dodger fans who had tickets but didn't get to the game in time to see it.

This team is taking on water now for sure, no longer a slump, they've been scuffling for about three weeks now.

It would be a shame if after all of this, they miss the playoffs.

Wouldn't be the first time the Red Sox @#$$ the bed down the stretch.

They are airing the O's and A's game here instead of Boston/LA. That frees up my afternoon. At least the game tomorrow night is on ESPN unless they preempt it for the Swedish hurling finals. It could be worse. USC and Hawaii kickoff their season at 11PM on Thursday night. That means the game will end around 3AM on the east coast. And they wonder why there is an east coast bias in college football.

The Nats are back in the race.:rolleyes2: They've gone on a tear (well, what constitutes a tear for them) and won a whole 5 games in a row to get back to 1 game above .500, a major accomplishment this season. Being only 8.5 games out of the last WC spot, I figure if they win 25 or so of their last 33 games, they're in. Too little, too late. Maybe they can save a little face and finish above .500. On the plus side, Jordan Zimmermann looked like his pre-All Star break self and won his 15th game. The only real question left in DC, baseball wise, is about who will be the new manager when DJ retires at the end of the season. Cal Ripken's name has been mentioned more than once in the dark corners of the rumor mill. I doubt it, a lot, but it would be a fabulous coup. :wink2: -- Al

Rays have taken two from the Yankees, is it too much to ask for the Yankees to win at least one game in this series?

They're falling further behind in the wild card race, looks like it's going to be a three team race for two spots between the A's/Rangers, O's and Red Sox/Rays.

The more I think about it, a one game play in game is pretty idiotic.

And after watching Red Sox pitchers attempt to bat in SF and LA, the whole "In interleague play, AL teams play by NL rules in games played in NL parks and vice versa" is also idiotic.

Why force either league to play with rules they are not used to otherwise; let the AL have the DH in NL parks and have NL pitchers hit in AL parks.

If MLB is dumb enough to have one set of rules for the AL and one for the NL, don't penalize the teams in interleague play for it.

Thanks for the win today you'se Yankees you'se.

Ok, enough of that.

Going over a friends house tonight to watch the Sox/Dodgers game, he told me his wife invited two of her friends over, they are Dodgers fans, it that ok? I told him, it's your house, it's fine with me; besides, like true Dodger fans, they'll show up in the fourth inning and leave in the seventh, so plenty of food and beer for me............

They will leave even earlier than that if the Sox take the lead.

Have to give them credit, they showed up before the game started and stayed until Napoli hit one to Seattle; good God, what a BOMB that was, had to go 450 feet.

Outstanding pitching all three games by the Red Sox starters, shut down the Dodgers for the most part all three games. Nice to see Gonzalez still has that warning track power to left, Dodger stadium kills that guy, he's got that inside out swing tailor made for the wall at Fenway, good luck Adrian.

You too Carl, you wanted all three of these games bad; you got one out of three, not bad, even for you.

Such a big difference between AL and NL baseball is all I can say.

This is my first time seeing Puig play; sorry, he's too much of a hot dog for my taste, posing after hitting single with his team down 4-0 yesterday and he goes after balls like Jones does for the Orioles, Mr Cadillac man himself.

Jones is a bit showey but at least he has earned the right to be and has put up numbers and performance that can justify it. Pooegg may just be a flash-in-the-pan. We will have to wait for a few years to see if he can earn the reputation he now has.:wink2: -- Al

Outfielders when I was growing up always caught the ball with two hands, that's how I was taught as well, did it throughout all of my years playing ball.

Some players today do it, a lot of them Cadillac it with the glove down by their side or extended away from their body, I'm waiting for one of them to drop one and look like a complete fool.

There are no style points when it comes to catching a fly ball.

And as far as the Sox/Dodgers series this weekend, in fairness to LA, their two best pitchers did not go in the series, that tomato can who pitched last night was awful, does he even feature a fastball; change up, change up, cutter, slider, change up, curve, reminded me of 87 year old Andy Pettitte, just an assortment of off speed junk.

The Dodgers got clobbered last night, but I think that it is actually good for them down the stretch. They realize now what it will take to win in the playoffs. It's fortunate for any team to get out of LA without facing Kershaw or Greinke though. Those guys are going to make LA tough in the playoffs with a shorter rotation.

There ya go George, my O's threw you a bone:)..but once again it wasn't easy in the bottom of 9th I had some old visions of a blown save to lose another one, but!!! my boys held on for this one, now time to run off 9-10 wins strait!!:)...Sammy

Sammy:

I had the chance to watch a few of the Oakland Baltimore games this weekend and I have to ask, why in the world doesn't Manny Machado get more press? He is probably a top five young talent and yet I never hear about him on the natinal level? What gives?

Mets took a major hit today: Matt Harvey may need Tommy John surgery {eek3}

That sucks, Brad, but it's not a major disaster for Harvey. Nats have two outstanding starting pitchers who have undergone the surgery, Strasburg and Zimmermann. With careful rehab and not rushing them back, both are as good as they ever were. No reason Harvey can't be either. The problem is that the Mets lose him for 2014 (assuming surgery in the next few months) and then careful use and restricted inning count for 2015. Might get some end-of-season action in 2014 if all goes well. I wish him well as he is a fun pitcher to watch. -- Al

Wow, what a shame, such a talented kid; what in God's earth did the Mets do to deserve all of this bad luck in recent years?

Oh yeah, that pact with Satan on 10/25/86....................

I read where he was having discomfort in his forearm for some time, they should have shut him down.

He'll be ok, most pitchers are better pitchers after the surgery than before, look at Lackey this year, he's been very good with tons of movement on his fastball...........best of luck Mets.

Former O's pitcher, the Royals Jeremy Guthrie, won his 13th game today as he helps out the O's even though he was traded away just as they reached respectability. He beat the Rays. Good game, Jeremy.:wink2: -- Al

He will probably be lost through 2014. Unfortunately, it's part of being a major league pitcher. They have a couple of highly regarded pitchers on the farm but don't know if they'll be ready. Fans were hoping that the team would be competitive next year. Might have to wait another year. Mets have now lost three starting pitchers: Harvey, Mejia and Hefner (who will also have Tommy John surgery). Hard to replace.

Bottom line is the human arm was not designed to throw a baseball, add in curves, splitters, cutters, and you arm really takes a pounding...................

Perhaps we wax nostalgic too much but this didn't seem to happen in the old days. Perhaps it was because if you hurt your arm you were essentially out of the game and only the fittest survived. Or perhaps we baby pitchers too much nowadays.

Good points, Brad. All this care for the pitcher, the pitch counts, the inning counts, doesn't appear to be making much difference as one pitcher after another gets hurt and has to undergo TJ surgery. I see where Harvey wants to do everything to avoid surgery, which is understandable, but those tears don't mend easily, so I hope he gets great advice and just doesn't end up postponing the inevitable. -- Al

Al,

From what I read, they have to do some tests and so forth. Since he will be out for 2014, I suppose waiting a month or two is not going to make that much of a difference. I read in the paper today that almost 1/3 of all current pitchers have had Tommy John surgery. Didn't know it was quite that high.

The Mets minor league system is equipped to replace him but I don't think the front office wanted to rush them. Moreover, they were probably planning to use one of them as trade bait for a hitter. The two hot prospects are Noel Syndergaard (who they got in the Dickey trade) and Rafael Montero. Right now Syndergaard is at Double A and doing well. Montero started out at Double AA this year where he lit it up and is now at Triple A where he's still adjusting.

Right now the Mets only have three reliable starters: Wheeler, Gee and Niese. Dice K is not the answer and I would have let him go but they are short of arms now. Signing Phil Hughes is a possibility as a stop gap; Yankees have no interest in him for 2014 and Citifield would probably suit Hughes.

Brad
