I see the O's have obtained Michael Morse (OF, DH) from the Mariners for a minor leaguer. Morse is a power hitter and a former member of the Nationals where he was very popular and a key clubhouse leader. Morse is quite capable of helping the O's if he can shake the injury problems he is dealing with this year. Morse was such a key member and so popular on the Nats that there are many who feel his trade to Seattle seriously effected the Nat's clubhouse chemistry this season and is at least partly responsible for the Nats failure to produce as expected this year. I hope Morse can do for the O's what he did for the Nats. -- Al

The series between St. Louis and Pittsburgh feels like the playoffs. Yesterday's game was more like an NLCS game than a simple Friday night game. The rest of the series should be just as intense.

Red Sox win, O's, Rays both lose, lead is up to 3.5 in the division.

The wild card race is getting very interesting, it's going to be a five team dogfight for those two spots.

As we head into the last day of August, in the AL the WC leaders, who are tied, have a 5 game lead in the loss column which, in my opinion, is the only measuring stick that counts as you can't make up losses.

In the NL the D'backs and the Nats are technically in it (5 and 6 games behind in the loss column, respectively) but not really.

Nats didn't help themselves last night by losing to the Mets. However, Gee who keeps getting better and is very, very tough and always seems to have the Nats number. Things don't get any easier when they face Zach Wheeler, who just keeps getting better and better. In the last few weeks he had pitched better than Harvey.

Even without Harvey, they have three very good pitchers: Wheeler, Niese and Gee. Next year they will add Montero and/or Syndergaard. In 2015, Harvey will be back. Watch out NL!

Brad, Gee is a genuine Nat killer. He has beaten us 4 times this season! Even so, last nights game turned on a mental error by our 3rd baseman, Zimmerman, who should have eaten a tough grounder instead of attempting a miracle throw to first base. The winning run scored while he made the throw. If he holds that ball that runner rounding third doesn't score and is probably out, ending the inning. That said, Gee has had the lowest ERA in the NL since sometime in June. Mets have a good pitching staff starting to line-up for next season. -- Al

This crucial road trip is turning very ugly for the O's. Dropped 2 of 3 to the Sox and now have dropped the first 2 to the NYY's, who also pass them for 3rd place in the AL East, and thus pass them in the WC race as well. Great pitching job by Feldman is wasted as the O's couldn't touch Nova, losing 2-0. Too late in the season to go flat. Now it is up to Chen to salvage the last game in the series, and he has lost 4 of his last 5 decisions.{sm2} I don't feel good about this. -- Al

Well Al, a Paul Simon song comes to mind about now..."slip, sliding away" it has been a fun, interesting race this year for the my O's but there was no way in hell they were going to win games this year like they did last year,(the one run games) that only happens once in a blue moon, I am still very excited about this team with a solid core of players signed for the long haul, I'm hoping this last month they will put up a good fight and who knows?? a good streak here or there and a few losses by the leaders maybe a Wild Card isn't out of the question?? right now I'm just hoping for a winning record for two years strait!!!!...Sammy

Sammy, you are right about the O's core players. They are as good as anyone elses, both infield and outfield. The problem is the starting pitching is really hit or miss. Tillman is turning into a solid pitcher but everyone else has faded. A 5 or 6 inning start on a regular basis spells long term wear and tear on the bullpen, which is what has happened to the O's. Gonzalez and Chen should be doing better than they are while Feldman and Norris are stop-gaps. Front office needs to find some starters from somewhere. The WC is still a viable option if some other pitcher or two can step up to help support Tillman and the bullpen. Even Buck can't work miracles if the pitchers don't do their jobs. -- Al

Red Sox win, Rays, O's lose, lead is up to 4.5 games, Yankees have passed the O's now in the WC race.

This ten game stretch is going to be critical for the Red Sox; 3 at home vs the Tigers, 4 at Williamsport East vs the MFY's, then 3 at the Trop vs the Rays...................what a brutal schedule that is....................

FEAR THE BEARDS.

O's manage to salvage the last game against the NYY's. All I have to say is thank goodness Girardi panicked and took Pettitte out of the game. He had us baffled. The relief pitcher took all of 4 pitches to turn 6 innings and 2 hours of hard work by Pettitte, who left with a 3-0 lead, into a 4-3 O's lead and eventual 7-3 win. Thank you Joe. -- Al

Red Sox sweep the White Sox, Rays get swept by the A's, lead up to 5.5, Yankees lose, 9.0 out.

What in the name of God is that tomato can Joba Chamberlain doing pitching in a one run game, throws a meatball right down broadway to Jones and gives up a three run bomb and that's that.

Tonight on MLB Network, one of the commentators predicts it will be A's/Rays in the ALCS, the other one said A's/Yankees.

So none of the three teams currently with the best records/leading their divisions in the AL are getting there then.

Ok.

I think I could have hit that pitch that Chamberlain threw and that is saying something.

All the blowhards on MLB Network ever say is the Yankees have an awesome bullpen; if so, what is he doing out there with the Yankees down a run in a game they have to have to stay in the WC race?

I thought I was the only one who noticed that the MLB Network is constantly saying how great their bullpen is. It isn't and Chamberlain proves it.

Well, another great performance by Dice K: 3 innings, 72 pitches, 6 runs and 7 hits :rolleyes2:

He appears to have nothing left. How many starts do the Mets give him? He's now started 3 games, lasted a total of 12.1 innings, given up 15 runs for an ERA of 10.95, and is headed for an 0-3 record. Perhaps the Mets should give one of the September call-ups a shot. I'll bet he's gone soon. -- Al

Interesting fact: There are 3 teams who lead baseball with the most comeback wins after trailing by 3 runs. Each team has comeback 10 times to win. They are the Boston Red Sox, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Baltimore Orioles. All trying to knock off each other in the AL East race. -- Al

Thank god this game is over. Mets lose 13-5. Basically, ESPN screwed them over (as if they care): Mets were supposed to play Nats yesterday at 1:05 but for some reason ESPN decided to switch the game to 8:05. Why? I have no idea. It's not like the whole of the US of A is screaming to see these two teams. It was bad enough the Mets blew the Nats game but they had a game today in Atlanta at 1:10. Because of the 8:05 start, they didn't get into Atlanta until 4am. Regardless of the outcome of last night's game, you knew that with Dice K starting and the team not hitting the hotel until maybe 5am, the chances of winning would be zilch. Thanks ESPN....Not!

Talk about tough luck. I just heard on ESPN that the Sox have been a shutout 11 times this year and Lackey has started 6 of those games.
