Baseball 2013 (2 Viewers)

The first WS I remember watching was Dodgers Twins. Koufax and Drysdale. What a combination. Twins had no shot. I think LA was called the Hitless Wonders because they had very little offense, just enough as it turned out.
I remember that one, as well. Koufax and Drysdale at the height of their abilities. Of course, that didn't help them in '66 against the O's when B-more swept the hitless wonders in 4. Dodgers scored 2 runs in the first game, losing 5-2, and then got shutout the last 3 games 6-0, 1-0, 1-0. Now that was a pitcher's series.:wink2: -- Al

Al,

He has no shot. Kershaw has this locked up. Wins doesn't automatically guarantee a Cy Young like it used to. His ERA is 1.87 and his Whip under 1. Zimmerman's ERA is almost 1.5 runs higher per game and his Whip is 1.10. He only has 2 more wins than Kershaw. Don't see it happening. Plus, he's on a division winner.
I know. I'm just blowing my home boys horn.:wink2: Kershaw has a deathlock on the award. Zimmermann was a legitimate contender through the end of June when he stood at 11-3, 2.28 ERA, and an under 1 WHIP. He has been less consistent since then going only 5-5, but he was as good as anyone for the first 3 months. And the disaster that has been this year's Nats has not helped. -- Al

That was an incredible series. No one expected the Os to win and bam they win in four straight. I was living overseas at the time in Barcelona and remember listening to the game on Armed Forces Radio through the shortwave. Listening to games over the radio was a treat. When I'm at work and there is an afternoon game, I listen to the game on the radio via the internet. Delivery methods have changed but listening to it on the "radio" hasn't.

Ah yes, radio. Back in the 60's that was the only real way to follow your team as TV coverage, (at least in this area), was sparse. Listened to the games and loved it. A good announcer made it easy to visualize the game and a joy to listen to, quite different than TV. Today I do my following via TV as all the games (both O's and Nats) are carried via the local cable. Oddly enough, my radio reception in this area is really bad so TV is my only real option. I'm only 20 or so miles from DC but can't get the games on radio. Odd. I miss the old airwaves and the sound effects. Kind of put you in the park with the team.:smile2: -- Al

What I did was sign up with MLB.com and you get all the games via radio. You can listen to the home and away announcers. Although I listen to WFAN, which carries the Mets, because MLB has the online rights, you cannot get the games online through WFAN. I inadvetently discovered that I could listen to the games through MLB.com. So, yesterday afternoon, I listened to the game on and off and last night when I went to bid, I listened for awhile to the Angels game and got the KLAA announcers. Pretty cool.

Yankees are doing their best to blow their WC chances. On Thursday, Rivera blows a save, his 6th this year, and then they blow a five run lead. On top of all that the Rays won but so did the Os and Tribe so the Yanks have been passed by them. You just can't keep blowing winnable games. All signs and failing pitching point to outside looking in. Unless they can make drastic moves in the off season, we may not see them in the playoffs for a few years. What will George do? ^&grin

I can't believe the NYY's blew those 2 games. Mo and a big lead should have equaled 2 wins but I'm glad for the O's sake that it didn't.:wink2: The WC shootout continues and the O's are still very much alive. Only 22 games left... -- Al

The last two nights were pure baseball bliss.

The Yankees storm back to take the lead on Thursday, only to see Fruitbat blow his 15th save vs the Red Sox, one strike away and BOOM, they lose.

Then last night, up 8-3, and Napoli hits a 329 foot grand slam at Williamsport East to tie it, then Victorino hits a two run bomb to win it.

Hughes, Logan and Joba.

Are you kidding me?

Is Joba trying to eat his way out of baseball or what.

Take the next two, sweep the leg and finish them off for the year.

I think I heard it on ESPN, but those 2 losses by NY were the first time that they have scored 8 or more runs in consecutive games, and lost, since 1911. It's all about the pitching. Always has been, always will be. -- Al

Yes, it's all about pitching for sure.

And by the way, Captain intangibles has had a great career, he's a "true Yankee" (whatever that means), but it's time to go, he's got NO range at all at short and can't hit his weight.

Time to go "Jetes" and call it a day.

And I'm really going to miss Pettitte when he retires in 15 years.

Whatever money he's making, I hope he's giving a big chunk of it to his chemist.

Speaking of pitching, I see where John Lackey is finally getting some run support today. Prior to today, Lackey was tied for second in the majors for lowest run-support during his starts, amongst qualifying pitchers. Cliff Lee has the lowest support at 3.07 runs per start (3.01 ERA) but has managed a decent 12-6 record. Lackey is tied with Stephen Strasburg, each with 3.15 runs of support per start. Lackey, who should win #9 today (currently leading 10-2 in NY), will have a 9-12 record with an ERA of around 3.27. Strasburg has an ugly 6-9 record but his ERA is 6th lowest in the majors at 2.85, and he also leads the Nationals in K's and WHIP as well as the ERA. Some pitchers just are snake-bitten in a given season. -- Al

Jeter hasn't really recovered and is not 100 percent. Yes, he is a true Yankee. Please don't egg Louis on. It's a nice peaceful Saturday.

I think Pettit is clean. He's just gotten old, although better lately. I doubt he'll be back.

12-3 already. Ouch! I think this is payback for '78.

Now it's 12-7 as Lackey apparently doesn't know how to pitch with a lead, they're better off not scoring a lot of runs when he pitches.

It got to 12-9, the Mike The Yankee Killer Napoli hit another bomb for insurance, 13-9 final.

So the Yankees have scored 25 runs in three games in this series.

And lost all of them.

And the Yankee ballwashing all game long by McCarver and whoever that nitwit was with him today was painful.

Joe Girardi for Manager of the year? The Yankees are in fourth place in the AL East. Good God.

And Jeter is hurt again.

FEAR THE BEARDS..............

O's got a walkoff win to keep pace in the WC with the Indians, gain on the Yanks and maybe the Rays if Seattle can hang on. Boston has a deathgrip on the AL East but the WC is going to the wire for the O's, Rays, and NYY's. Time is getting short. -- Al

Another weekend of play over, 20 games left in the regular season, and the O's remain tied with Cleveland in the battle to get to the last WC spot, 2 games back of Tampa, who currently holds it. Can't say it isn't interesting. Just wish the O's would get hot instead of just bumping along.
Against all odds, the Nationals are still mathematically alive for the WC in the NL, but that is more of a dream than reality as they trail Cinncy (who just swept the Dodgers) by 8 games with only 20 left. The Nats, while not going to make the playoffs, have at least played better baseball for the last few weeks. They never have managed to go on a hot streak but neither have they gone cold. Just meandering along, but they now look as if they are capable of finishing over .500 and maybe they can cut Atlanta's NL East lead to single digits. Boy, have the goals for this team sure changed! From World Series contender to just finishing above .500.{eek3}^&grin -- Al

Joe Girardi and Buck Showalter almost got into a fight? What happened? All I have seen is the pic that is online with no details?

Missed it. Not enough TV's to watch everything with the Skins, Nats, and O's all on at the same time. O's managed to win and gain on everyone but Cleveland. Nat's Gonzalez threw a brilliant 1-hitter with the only hit coming in the 7th (a chalk raising hit down the 1st base line). -- Al

I wish Joe had smashed the little peckerneck. Buck has had Yankee-envy ever since Steinbrenner fired him on the eve of the Yankees becoming a very good team.

At any rate, it's pretty obvious this is not the Yankees' year.

Brad:

Thanks, Yahoo Sports has the story now.

It has been a while since I have seen two managers get in a fight. It is more rare than two goalies fighting in the NHL.
