Baseball 2013 (3 Viewers)

Al,

You can chalk up a win tonight right now. Hughes is a disaster. I have (unfortunately) been at three games he started this season (all losses), one of which (against Seattle) he gave up 7 runs before recording an out. I just can't understand why Girardi (who has done a fantastic job managing through all the injuries, I am not questioning him, just wondering) keeps starting him.
Hi Louis. I can't figure Hughes out. He was a decent pitcher in 2010 and 2012 (hurt in 2011), when he won 34 games but it's like he has no clue this season. Maybe it's just one of those down years pitchers have, but you are right about starting him. How can the Yanks afford to keep putting him out there in the middle of a playoff chase? Maybe they simply have no other option. If I was Girardi, I'd find one though. For the O's sake, I hope Hughes doesn't break form tonight.:wink2: -- Al

Another great performance by the Mets: they just mailed it in today

Brad, that was the Nats best series this year, both in pitching and hitting. We haven't come close to those numbers before this. Our road trip was a very successful 8-2 but I greatly fear all this winning is coming far too late. We only have 16 games left to catch Cinncy and we're down 5.5 games. Found the formula too bloody late. I think we are both be looking forward to next year. Mets got some good pitching lined up and maybe the Nats new manager can fire the guys up out of the gate in 2014. -- Al

Al,

They're a team to fear, no doubt about it and the Mets have some major personnel losses right now but to lose four and not even win one and to be out homered 13-0 is just not acceptable. Duda and Davis are complete stiffs at 1B. I don't want to see their sorry butts next year. Every freakin' September it's the same bleeping thing. They're like a Double A team right now. Even though they're not as talented as good teams they were competitive and fighting. Today was just pathetic. I heard the manager was livid.

Brad

Yankees are blowing a game they should have had.
It was a clutch Hr, that's for sure. A new life in the 9th and all we have to do is avoid blowing it as we seem to be trying to do.:rolleyes2: Up, down, up, down. Did you notice that the Jets are hanging tough? -- Al

Don't want to seem too pessimistic, but the O's closer, Johnson, may have just wild-pitched the O's season down the drain. -- Al

That catch by Soriano looks large now.

I have to feel Pats will get one more score.

As it turns out, that wild pitch was a killer. Better take sharp objects away from Sammy.

Looks like the yanks salvaged the sports night in New York.

BTW, my thoughts and prayers are with all the New Jerseyans effected by the boardwalk fire.

Dare I hope? Having thrown in the towel on the Nats playoff hopes a while back, I find they are still very much alive in the WC race thanks to their recent resurgence in their last 33 games, in which they have gone 24-9. In fact, 17 days ago, the Nats trailed Cinncy by 10 games for the last WC. Tonight the Nats cut that lead to 4.5 games with 15 games to play. Still a tall order, but the Nats have cut 3 games off the lead in the last 4 so maybe a little hope won't hurt.:wink2: As Andy Dufresne said "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing." -- Al

With only 15 to play and down four in the loss column, I still think it's a tall order.

And let's not forget my favorite Pirate on that team, Dave Parker, a cannon for an arm and he used to hit lazers.

What a great bunch of guys that team was..............

Great memories, but the Cobra is my all time favorite. Cannon for an arm that is for sure, I believe he threw a few guys out that season down the line in Right Field including one for the record books in the ALl Star Game. Guy was pure talent and could move for a big man. He hit an enormous amount of triples in his career. The Hall of Fame vote on him is PURE BS. The guy was dominant and versatile in his era, MVP's, Batting Championships, Gold GLoves, I mean come on.

I hate the freaking HOF, one line says it all - How can Ty Cobb be in there and Pete Rose not. End of Story.

TD

The answer is simple. Rose put himself on the disqualified list because he bet on baseball. For baseball there is no greater sin (even steroids).

Statistically, he belongs in there no doubt about it. Ty Cobb, one of the greatest and meanest SOBs to play the game, was accused of cheating once but the Commissioner found him innocent, so there is no comparison.

As I've mentioned before the HOF is not connected with MLB so the Hall separately decides who gets in.

Parker will probably get in through the Veterans Committee. However, he has only received around 20% of the required vote, probably due to the cocaine scandal of the early 80s.

No doubt it's a long shot. I'm really just glad to see them finally playing like they were expected to, even if they did spin their wheels for 80% of the season. If the long shot comes through, they will be a very dangerous team to face in the playoffs. Still, it is going to take an almost complete collapse by Cinncy. -- Al

Call me crazy, but I think Bartolo Colon is the AL Cy Young award winner. The man is 40 years old and he just won his 16th game today, against 6 losses, with an ERA of 2.73. His numbers are outstanding. He came within 1 inning today of his 4th complete game and 4th shutout. Scherzer has more wins but Colon has all the numbers. I would like some of whatever Colon has been eating or drinking, please. -- Al

"Bartolo Colon has pitched magnificently this season. He leads the AL in wins, is sporting a 2.89 ERA and is pounding the strike zone like crazy, allowing only one walk per every nine innings pitched. This, apparently, is something baseball should be embarrassed by. Why? Because he tested positive for synthetic testosterone last year.." This is from one of many articles written about the suspect over performance of Colon..Not sure why he continues to get a pass while others are being disciplined or discredited for similar abuses..Michael

Excellent question. How does he avoid punishment if the abuse reports are true? It would seem MLB still has some problems to iron out.:rolleyes2: -- Al
