Seattle beats the O's yesterday on a 3 run bomb by Cano; he's got only 8 so far this year and only 25 doubles so far, both career lows for him. He is hitting .330, second highest career BA if that holds up.

Wow.

Seattle spend a dump truck full of money for singles hitter then.

This is what happens when left handed hitters leave the cozy confines of Williamsport East in New York................

The Yankees are committed to 172 million for 11 position players already in 2015; don't forget, Arod will be back.

Throw Lester in at 25 million per, you're looking at a 200 million payroll and that's roughly half of a MLB roster.

Sherman Klump and Cy Tanaka are out next year (assuming Cy has TJ surgery) and Nova will be back for the second half of 2015.

The future's so bright in New York, you have to wear shades.

The big difference is that the Yanks will always play hard and not tank entire seasons as the Sox have done all too soon. It is by all hands on deck, that we at least try to be competitive, no matter the circumstances..Michael

In the fight for the second wild card, there are now five teams within one game of each other.

The winner would have to face either As or Angels but to win it you have to be in it.

Couple of fantastically pitched games for the Nats and O's yesterday. The O's beat the Mariners 1-0 in a brilliant game by Tillman. The lone run of the game came with a leadoff Hr in the 1st inning by Nick Markakis. Nick had 3 hits in the game, giving him 1500 in his O's career. He is now one of only six players to reach 1500 hits in an O's uniform, joining Ripken, Brooksie, Murray, Anderson, and Boog. Quite a neat achievement. It was also the first time in modern O's history that a 1-0 win was because of a leadoff Hr.
The Nats got an equally brilliant game from Strasburg in their 4-0 win over Philly. The game was a pure pitcher's duel between Strasburg and Hamels, being 1-0 (and unearned, at that) into the 8th inning when the Nats reached the Phillies bullpen for 3 runs to make the final 4-0 score. A good day for the two first place teams. -- Al

Good lord. The rich get richer. Detroit now has 3 Cy Young Award winners on their staff. Don't know if that has ever happened before. Hard to bet against Detroit now. We'll see but it's going to be tough to beat 3 starters like that in a playoff series. Fire Sale day has been busy.{eek3} -- Al
Actually, the 3 Cy Young Award winners on one team at the same time HAS happened before. During the 1990's, the Atlanta Braves dominated the award with Maddux winning 4, Glavine winning 2, and Smoltz winning 1 in 1996, which was the other team with 3 Cy winners. -- Al

George:

It was.

It had something to do with a collection, a Figarti sub, a coffin and a not so nosy neighbor.

LOL; that is one of the all time greatest toy soldier stories ever and I am glad I was in the middle of it............

At times watching Strasburg pitch can be breathtaking. His command and control can make hitters look lost, swinging way too early or late. I wish the Giants had him, but since they don't I appreciate him from a distance.

This post isn't getting enough love; those plucky band of underachievers, those little trains that could, the New York Yankees and their bloated 189 million dollar payroll, they play till the last out, never give up, what a team.

This really is beautiful on a number of levels.

The Yankees don't solve problems, they throw dump trucks full of money at them.

They need a real GM instead of that circus clown Cashman, he should wear floppy shoes and a rubber nose in the owners box and get it over with.

Speaking of the NYY's, Cy McCarthy has out dueled Scherzer and Detroit 2-1 to run his record to 4-0 in 5 starts with NY. Considering his season with Arizona was a disaster (he started 1-10 before winning his last 2 starts with them), his current 7-10 record is not horrible. Good thing for NY as they have lost another starter with Phelps going to the DL. Just how many pitchers can this team lose and stay in the race? Apparently all of them, just plug in someone else and motor on. -- Al

They appear close to getting Pineda back; he's currently rehabbing. Tanaka is due to throw on Monday. If he has no pain -- a big if -- he could be back in September.

The biggest series of the season for the Orioles begin tonite in Toronto, 3 game set, if the O's play well they could put some distance between themselves and the Jays, just hope the bats warm up a little...Sammy

Sammy, you are right about this series. This is going to be Toronto's chance. The O's are #2 in Hr's yet Cruz is in a slump and Davis still hasn't gotten untracked. The rest of the AL East are missing the opening. If those two get going and the pitching continues as it has been, there won't be any catching the O's. IF...:wink2: -- Al

Races are heating up all over the place. The O's and Jays, the Dodgers and Giants, the A's and Angels, the Brewers and Cards. It is going to be an intense August and September. As a baseball fan I can't ask for more.

So far, so good. Game 1 to the O's thanks to Norris, the bullpen, and 3 Hr's.^&cool -- Al
