Jays win again last night, hottest team in the AL with a 6 game winning streak, have pulled to within 1.5 games of the O's, but 3 in the old loss column, which is more important.

Could be a dogfight with the loser either the second WC team or out altogether.

In the AL winning your division is huge.

The last thing any team wants is a 1 game playoff versus the A's or Angels.

Toronto has been really hot since the All-Star game, but they have been streaky all year. They were losers in April and June while being red hot in May. They have split July, being cold before the break and hot since. It may come down to which Toronto shows up in September. -- Al

Killer game last nite with O's and Angels, pitching for both teams was outstanding and felt like a playoff game, Angels win 1-0 going 13 innings, just glad the O's are almost done with the West Coast teams...Sammy
O's keep getting playoff caliber pitching. Beat Seattle 2-1 tonight for the 5th win in the last 7 games, all 1-run games, tying a club record for consecutive 1-run games. Looking good! -- Al

Nats lost to Philly again, this time 2-1. They are now 3-6 over the last 9, 3 lost by 1-run. They continue to waste good starting pitching by not scoring. With Zimmerman out, they are once again just trading water. Somebody needs to step up and take over leadership and get this club inspired and start them hitting. Same old frustrations from Zimm's earlier trip to the DL. -- Al

Funny how the AL East has started to take shape since the All-Star game. The O's have been playing good baseball for a while now. You couple that with the Jay's streakiness and I think they have a legit shot at the East. I will not count the Yanks out until I know what Tanaka’s prognosis is but even with him I think they are a longshot. Boston has clearly thrown in the towel and the Rays are all but done without Price.

The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Pawtucket Red Sox last night and now sit 7 games out.

They are done.

The whole division has mailed it in outside of the Jays, that's the only team Buck and his plucky band of underachievers have to worry about from here on out.

Still a lot of baseball left, but it's lining up now that if the A's hold on out west, they'd play the Angels and the O's get the Tigers; Scherzer/Verlander/Price/Scherzer/Verlander in a five game series.

Best of luck with that one.

Again, still two months to go, should be interesting come playoff time as four good teams will be battling it out in the AL for the pennant.

Thank heaven for small favors as the rest of the NL East all lost last night. The Nats aren't playing well but neither is anyone else in the East. The Nats have lost 2 in a row, but the Braves have lost 4 and the Marlins have lost 3. We'll take it. Any lead is better then no lead.:rolleyes2: -- Al

That pitching line-up by Detroit is a major stumbling block for the O's. We have not played them well, being only 1-5 this year. The one ray of hope is that the shine on Verlander's 'S' is a bit duller this year. The O's have played the AL West very well, going 20-11 against them, but this hides the weakness against Oakland as we are only 2-4 against them. No doubt any opponent in the playoffs will be a rough go but Detroit and Oakland give the O's fits. Still, the playoffs are the playoffs and it is better to be in than out. If the O's can continue playing and pitching at their current level and get into the playoffs, I wouldn't bet against them, regardless of the opponent. The O's overachieving starting pitchers are doing their job as well as any other rotation is at this particular time and that is as surprising to me as it is to the rest of the AL.:wink2: -- Al

As lead down to one. Good sign: Trouty hitting a HR. However, Skaggs is on the DL with forearm pain. Not good. Colon could be available. However, he has to clear waivers and Yanks could put in a claim. I think the Cliff Lee option is out for them after he left the game early the other night.

I have no no choice but to pay attention to the Yankees in this town and they aren't a good team. Starting pitching is a mirage and in all fairness their starting staff is decimated by injury. Worse than what I saw with the 87 Mets. No Tanaka, no CC and no Nova. Impossible to recover from that. I think the days of just signing free agents for them is over or need to be; that business plan doesn't work anymore.

The injury bug is just unbelievable. Every team seems to get hit at sometime. The NYY's have taken a real beating in that regard. Injuries are so prevalent that they dominate the baseball news on ESPN. 8 of their 14 headline stories were injury related earlier this AM. That the NYY's have stayed relevant to the race is just a fantastic story. -- Al

Jason, it was an interesting signing that had me scratching my head. Uggla produced nothing in Atlanta the last couple of years. I watched enough of last night's game to see him boot the ball all over the place. Uggla was known for his bat, not his glove, and now that the bat has gone MIA, it's a wonder how he'll stay in MLB. There does seem to be a shortage of available second basemen right now, so finding a suitable replacement might be tough. Maybe Uggla will come around. If he ever finds that bat again, he will be worth having. -- Al
Well, the Dan Uggla experiment didn't last long. Not surprising. -- Al

35 years ago today, Thurman Munson died.

So when they sign Lester next year, what will you say?^&grin Michael

The Yankees are committed to 172 million for 11 position players already in 2015; don't forget, Arod will be back.

Throw Lester in at 25 million per, you're looking at a 200 million payroll and that's roughly half of a MLB roster.

Sherman Klump and Cy Tanaka are out next year (assuming Cy has TJ surgery) and Nova will be back for the second half of 2015.

The future's so bright in New York, you have to wear shades.

I still can't figure the Uggla experiment out. 2B continues to be a problem for the Giants, but whomever they get will certainly be better than him.

BTW, class move by the Boston fans giving Jeter a standing ovation after his HR on Friday.

Looking at the second wild card in the AL, I may have written off the Yanks too soon. They are only one game behind Toronto and tied with the Royals and Seattle.
