Arrieta of the Cubs just wrapped up his 20th win of the season, a 3-hit shutout with 11 k's, and dropping his ERA to 1.88. The NL Cy Young award will be one of the toughest choices in a long time. Greinke's ERA lead over Arrieta has shrunk to the point (0.23) where it simply isn't enough to guarantee the award to Greinke. The other key numbers between them are equally close. There are advocates for Greinke and Kershaw but I think Arrieta has earned the award, if for no other reason than he has carried the Cubs to the post-season almost alone in terms of starting pitching. Greinke and Kershaw play well off each other, Arrieta has no one to carry the load with him. The next biggest winner on the Cubs is Lester at 10-11. -- Al
Arrieta is on a real roll. In his last 18 starts, he has 18 QS, is 14-1 and his ERA over that time is 0.94. Arrieta now has 4 CG's and 3 shutouts. Greinke has 1 CG and no shutouts. Just sayin'.:wink2: -- Al

Good news for Arrieta and the Giants, Greinke is a scratch for tonight's game against Arizona with calf issues.

The Giants are only 6.5 back now!

It's getting really hard to watch this team now. They don't score runs -- déjà vu -- and Collins' decisions are questionable; Colon is obviously not great tonight (he had trouble getting out of the 6th) and he lets him get into trouble in the 7th by loading the bases before bringing in a reliever, who then gives up 3 runs and the lead.

They are doing their best to give this away.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, Brad. Nats are doing their best to give it away, as well. Gopher Ball Scherzer has struck again and the Nat's hitters are making the very average O's starting pitchers look like Cy Young. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Boy, talk about choking when the chips are on the line, the Nats are proving masters at it. Two games in a row with a chance to gain and they suddenly can't hit squat. Mets have no worries as long as the Nats continue to lose, this 'race' is done. Coming up little in the big games: the Nats epitaph. -- Al

I just watched the end of the Nats game and both teams are pathetic the way they're finishing. Mets starting pitching, bullpen and hitting sucked on this 3-6 home stand.

I should I suppose I should be happy that a game was shaved off the magic number but the way they played tonight can't make you feel comfortable.

The upside to watching the Nats choke away their season is that the O's are still alive and kicking in the WC race. They have moved up 2 spots in the race for the last spot, 4 games back. A slim chance, but viable. A few days back, they had to jump 5 teams, now it's down to 3. If they can stay in it for a few more games, they close with 7 straight at home. -- Al

The Washington Chokers (aka Nats) blew all 3 games to the O's, so have obviously thrown in the towel and their pride. Hitting and bullpen failed again. What a shock. Now I would like to see the 'never-say-die' O's take advantage of the Nats collapse and get themselves into the playoffs. O's are back to .500 and are still very much alive. So, Go O's! The Nats loss is the O's gain but they need help. -- Al

I'm a bit surprised that the Nats got swept as I figured they'd be the ones doing the sweeping.

Anyway, with the Mets win tonight, I guess the title is inevitable -- first in 9 years -- as the magic number is 3. I'd like to see them get this over with this weekend.

It was a gutless performance by a team that was still in the race. Very disappointing to see the lack of fire, urgency, and results. The Nats just laid down and died. They needed big games from the starting pitchers and didn't get a single one. They needed timely hitting and only got one, and that didn't hold up thanks to the bullpen failing, again. Even Harper was unable to change the outcome as the O's were very careful with him. He was 0-6 in the series, but was walked 7 times, whenever his bat could change things. All in all. the series was a miserable display by the Nats. Now, who will get the blame for this mess? -- Al

I'm afraid the Manager. The Os needed these games as badly as the Nats but to get swept at home (even though the chances of catching the Mets were not high) doesn't look good. Also the Mets sweep a couple of weeks ago didn't look good but to me this is just as bad. Since you can't fire the players....

The Os could have mailed it in but have kept fighting. That is why Buck is such a great manager. However, every game for them is now a must game as it is for every team they're trying to catch. If I had to pick a team that would catch the Astros, it would be the Angels.

My son gave up on them a long time ago but I told him that part of being a fan is supporting your team through thick and thin, that eventually they would snap out of it (Trout had an awful August) and you just never know. They're now only a game back in the loss column so they have a shot.

The Angels now control their own fate as they have drawn even as they have same number of losses as Astros. They have winnable games against Mariners and As. Their last four games are with Rangers, whose magic number is 5. Hopefully, the Rangers have clinched it by then, although I doubt it.

Almost game time for your boys, Brad. Will the Dark Knight clinch it for you all today? I'm betting he does.:wink2: Good luck and congrats in advance.^&grin -- Al

After 9 years, they are finally back in the playoffs! A wonderful moment for Mets fans and the players.

Onto the playoffs. Incredibly in their last 23 road games they are 20-3. Conversely, they are 6-12 at home.

But today is to be savored. We don't get there too often.

On the day the Nats were officially eliminated, Strasburg had another fine start, even though he got an ND for his efforts. Threw 8 innings of 3-hit, 1 run ball, fanning 13. Was his 4th straight start with double figure K's. Now has 50 K's in his last 30.1 innings. Heck of a September for him with a 1.61 ERA in his 4 starts this month. -- Al

O's rollercoaster on a downswing again. No sooner do they hit .500 with a little mo, then right down they go again, losing 2 straight to the Red Sox and really putting themselves in a deep hole. They are 4.5 games out of the WC, 4 teams to jump with 8 to play. Still breathing, but... -- Al

Costly win for the Halos last night as they kept pace with the Astros. They lost their closer on a groin injury as he jumped off the mound to cover 3rd. He may be gone for the season. They are also without their set up man Joe Smith, who sprained his ankle against the Twins last week. Someone is going to have to fill in.

Minnesota is one back and Cleveland two. The Os are probably done. Not enough games left.

True enough. O's are probably done. Problem from my viewpoint is that I've written them off 3 different times and they're still in it. Stranger things have happened.^&grin -- Al
