In the Bad Luck catagory: O's Chris Davis has officially been robbed of 5 home runs when outfielders made outstanding plays to grab the ball as it sailed over the fence. No other hitter is close to losing so many Hr's to defensive wizardry. -- Al
Well, color me totally bewildered. The O's sweep the Nats to put themselves somewhat back in the WC race, and then they turn around and are swept by last place Boston, and shutout all 3 of those games! What the heck is going on in B-more? This inconsistency has been a season long problem and has cost them the post-season. I just don't get it. How do you go from a positive to a negative that suddenly. This has been one season of big disappointment for me, with the Nats crapping out and now the O's looking like they just didn't care, when they had the chance. Beats me. -- AlO's rollercoaster on a downswing again. No sooner do they hit .500 with a little mo, then right down they go again, losing 2 straight to the Red Sox and really putting themselves in a deep hole. They are 4.5 games out of the WC, 4 teams to jump with 8 to play. Still breathing, but... -- Al
Arrieta dealing bullets against the Pirates tonight. Has a 1-hit shutout through 7. Went 6 perfect before Pirates lead off 7 with a single. He also hit a Hr and barely missed a 2nd one that was caught at the wall. -- Al

Arrieta got his 21st, going 7 scoreless as the Cubs won 4-0. His ERA is down to 1.82 on the year. -- AlArrieta dealing bullets against the Pirates tonight. Has a 1-hit shutout through 7. Yeah, that isn't done with yet. Williams already said Papelbon will be suspended by refused further comment. The Papelbon pickup has been a disaster from the word go. They destroyed Storen's confidence and alienated the clubhouse, where it was seen as a completely unnecessary deal. Now this. Papelbon is a complete jerk and there is no way he is going to be able to recover from this. He attacked Harper, going for the throat, after instigating the whole incident to start with. He's got to be finished in DC. -- AlIn the games that I saw where he pitched against the Mets he just pitched well enough to lose.
I just saw the video of the Harper Papelbon fight. I can't believe they haven't disciplined or released Papelbon. Imagine if someone had grabbed your best player by the throat -- think Jeter or Trout -- they would be sent packing in a heartbeat.

Jason, there was a rather large article in the Wash. Post this Sunday addressing that exact situation. It seems he lost the 'hearts and minds' some time back as a continuing lack of ability to adjust, on both tactical and personal levels, became apparent. He, according to may unnamed veteran players, was always tense and seemingly angry. At any rate, he was on thin ice the whole second half of the season. The only thing he has going for him at this point is that GM Rizzo and Bryce Harper both think the world of him. Don't know if that's enough to save his job, although Harper's support will carry some weight. -- AlI hate to say it but Williams has lost control of that clubhouse.

Quite possible. I know he lost me.{eek3} -- AlOne host on local sports radio here in the Bay Area (it is a popular topic as Williams is an ex-Giant) said he lost the clubhouse when he pulled Zimmermann from game 2 of the NLDS last year.
Brad, as you can imagine, Williams' fate is a hot topic in the paper and on the Nat's sports talk show. Personally, I think he's gone, but as I mentioned somewhere else, he is a favorite of GM Rizzo and Harper. I doubt that is enough to save him, but who knows how much the Lerner's might bend to keep Harper happy? If it was my decision, Williams is gone, but it's obviously not my decision. The team is going to have to be rebuilt so the Nats may as well start with the manager. He may turn out to be a great manager someday, but it won't be in DC next season. -- AlIn my view, he should be fired (only to be preceded by letting Papelbon go) or put on a very short leash for next year.
As a Mets fan, I would be delighted to have him back as a manager. There is no way they should have let the Mets hang around this year until it was ripe for the taking. Yes, they had injuries but so does every team. When the Mets were floundering this year because they had no hitting, somehow their manager managed to keep them all together until the 7th Cavalry arrived. If I were a Nat fan, I'd be screaming for Williams' head and pretty darned upset if he were there next year.
Brad. I completely agree. I didn't mean to make it sound like Harper had any real input to all this, only that certain people who make the decisions might not ignore Harper's feelings about this, even though they should and will have to. As to the NYY's, they also fired a certain Yogi Berra after he managed the Yanks to the 1964 pennant. I guess losing the series did him in.:rolleyes2: -- AlAl,
I don't think a 22 year old should be deciding who the manager is, no matter how talented. If the GM decides, well, that's another story. Someone has to pay for this year and we all know who pays the price for unmet expectations.
Heck, the Yankees even fired Casey Stengel and he only won umpteen championships.
