That was an ugly inning although not as bad as it could have been thanks to the DP. Sure went south fast. If the Mets don't come back in this game, they will have an extremely tough road. -- Al
Deep do-do but they are back to the top of their rotation which is their best chance. -- Al

I think they will win game 5 but winning two in KC will be a tall order. My guess is that the series goes 6.

I wonder if Familia is damaged goods as a closer now. Didn't get the job done in game 1 or tonight (although not totally his fault).

This was a poorly managed game starting with yesterday. Why is Familia pitching in a game where you have a 6 run lead. Second, he only planned to use Matz for 5 but then allowed him to pitch to two batters in the 6th. He should have been out, at the very least, after the first batter. Third, he uses Colon for one batter only when he could have pitched the 7th. I understand you should use the formula but Clippard has been ineffective for a month. It could have been Colon, Reed and then Familia.

As soon as Clippard walked one guy he should have been gone. If you were going to use Familia for 5 outs, why not 6? That's what KC did.

And then this mindless double switching: putting in Lagares and then taking him out. He's the only guy consistently hitting the ball! My god!

Maddening!

I blame this on Collins. His insistence on using a formula in the bullpen from which he won't deviate has cost the Mets this game.

All year, you never had a bullpen. Most of your losses happened after the starters left. Been that way most of the season. Hard to manage a bullpen you really do not trust..Also agree that Clippard should be burried with Hoffa under one of those New Jersey parking lots..Michael

The problem had been the 7th inning as it is for most teams; they had fixed the 8th inning problem with Clippard. Then they acquired Addison Reed, which generally fixed the problem, and then Clippard went south.

Now I understand that today's mantra is everybody knowing their roles but when you're at this point of the WS, you can't engage in the same old thinking. I understand that everyone needs to know their roles during the regular season but with four games to go (if we're lucky), you need to throw that stuff out the window.

Mets announcers on the Mets post game show -- Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling -- were very critical after the game, particularly Ronnie.

Again, you just can't win with 6 hits but when you have a lead with 5 outs to go, you need to close it out.

Well, today is another day. Hoping for a big effort from Harvey. I know it's not going to happen but they should sit Cespedes.

Good points about 'same old thinking'. That's what cost Williams his job in DC, the inability to adjust to the situation and sticking to his formula pitching because 'that's what we did all season'. Clippard is something of a mystery. He was lights out when pitching for the Nats, although he did have bad stretches, like all pitchers. This current bad streak by him has gone on too long and is uncharacteristic. He hasn't been the same pitcher, for the most part, since leaving the Nats and I wonder if the years of heavy use have caught up with him. Cespedes pulled the Mets up by the boot straps offensively when he came over, but it has been a while since his offense has been evident, and he is something of a menace in the field and on the base paths. Tough call on sitting him. He would seem to be a perfect fit for the DH in the AL. -- Al

So far, so good. Mets are not hitting: what else is new? :rolleyes2:

Harvey's third time through the batting order will be telling.

Now for the fourth time through the lineup.
The question is now does Collins let Harvey finish or take a chance with someone else. I say let him finish. He still is sharp and pitch count is reasonable. -- Al

Blast! Thought he could do it. Now the bullpen... :rolleyes2: -- Al

Not a second guess but when he walked the first hitter, I said that has to be it. The second batter may have proved costly for a trip to KC.

Well, this just keeps getting worse and worse. Embarrassing.
That Duda throwing error killed them. A good throw and the runner is out by 5 feet, game over. KC is better than I thought but the Mets have done themselves in tonight. Too bad. I still think the Mets were the better team. Mets bats and bullpen just went bad. -- Al

The decision to pitch Reed is just inexplicable. And now they bring in Colon? The last two games have not been Terry's finest.

I disagree about the Mets being the better team. The Royals showed they were better. Mets have work to do: need to get strong up the middle and improve the bullpen.

Well, that's it. A good season. They probably exceeded expectations.

I'm just a lot more familiar with the Mets and I really underestimated KC. Mets pen does need help, but a lot of the problem was the offensive failure. Hitters only showed up in one game. Can't win without runs. The Mets had a great year and the starting staff should have them in it again next year. -- Al
